Gordon Brown has condemned the execution in China of Akmal Shaik 'in the strongest terms'. Do you? China ignored final pleas from his family to stop him being killed. Despite being found guilty of trying to smuggle 4 kilos of heroin in 2007, his family argued that the 53 year-old was mentally ill - and suffered from bipolar disorder. But should Chinese authorities have granted a reprieve or is it right not to bow to international pressure? What effect will this have on relations between Britain and China?

It's the phone-in with Rachel at 9.

How far should you be allowed to go to protect your home?
The Conservatives say if they win the next election, people who tackle intruders could be given more legal protection.
Last week, Munir Hussain, who's from Buckinghamshire, was sent to prison for beating up a man who tied up his family in their home.
What rights should you have to protect yourself and your family in your own home?
Have you faced an intruder in your house- what did you do? Did you feel able to protect yourself? Is it better to just call the police?

Do you let your children drink at home?

New guidance from the Chief Medical Officer for England says under-15s should drink no alcohol, with under-17s drinking only under supervision.

Sir Liam Donaldson says there's clear evidence the earlier young people get a taste for alcohol, the more likely they are to become problem drinkers later in life.

Is a complete ban on drinking before 15 the right way to go? Or is Sir Liam going too far with this advice to parents?

The artists to achieve Christmas number one singles between 2005 and 2007: Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis and Leon Jackson

Early sales figures indicate Rage Against The Machine is ahead of X Factor winner Joe McElderry in the race for the Christmas number one.

A Facebook group aiming to get the band's 1992 hit "Killing In The Name" to the top of the festive chart has attracted more than 750,000 members.

But McElderry's debut "The Climb", out on CD today, is expected to catch up by the weekend.

Has The X Factor swamped or advanced the Christmas charts? Is the power of Simon Cowell robbing us of the traditional battle to top the charts at Christmas?

What makes a sporting legend?

The winner of the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year last night was Manchester United's Ryan Giggs. The Formula One World Champion, Jenson Button, was runner-up.
The lifetime achievement award went to Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros who's recuperating from a brain tumour.
But what is it that defines a legend? Is it the number of trophies in the cabinet? Is it staying at the top of your sport year after year. Is it overcoming adversity like our paralympians?
And does a legend have to be a success in all parts of their life- have the revelations about Tiger Woods and his private life reduced him in your eyes?

Using your mobile while driving

On the phone in after 9 - What's the most dangerous distraction while you're driving?
New research suggests more motorists are using hand-held mobile phones than before tougher penalties were introduced two years ago.
The Transport Research Laboratory says despite risking a sixty pound fine and three points on a licence, more drivers have been caught this year -- that's more than before the change in the law.
But is this the biggest distraction for motorists? Is the worst thing you've seen someone using a mobile phone behind the wheel?

Is it time for higher taxes for the rich?

Post categories:

Christopher Hunter | 07:50 UK time, Wednesday, 9 December 2009

Comments

On the phone-in from 9, we're asking, is it time for higher taxes for the rich?

It's Alistair Darling's pre-Budget report today - the last before the general election.
Sources say Mr Darling will speak of the case for fairer taxes. He's already announced increases in the top rate of tax and national insurance and it is possible there may be a further rise today.

The government's expected to increase taxes on bankers today. But is it time to ask for more from all the wealthy?

Short-haul not for the long term?

Richard Jackson | 08:06 UK time, Tuesday, 8 December 2009

This morning on the phone-in .... Plane or train?

On this morning's programme, the chairman of the Committee on Climate Change, Lord Adair Turner, told us everyone's got to take responsibility for stopping global warming -- and that should mean using the train and not the plane for many trips. So is time running out for short-haul flights? Should we accept we just can't fly around the UK and Europe -- sometimes for just a few pounds -- anymore? And is taking the train the answer?

Where would you make the cuts?

On the phone-in after 9 o'clock this morning: What would you cut?

From 0900, Gordon Brown is to start setting out Labour's plans for slashing public spending by £12bn over four years. That could see civil servant jobs go and new NHS computer systems shelved.

The Chancellor's also understood to be trying to raise several hundred million pounds with a higher tax on bankers' bonuses in the UK.

In his pre-Budget report speech on Wednesday, Alistair Darling is expected to confirm annual borrowing will top £175bn. So where would you make the savings?

That's the phone-in with Nicky from 9 this morning. Text us on 85058, email breakfast@bbc.co.uk or post your opinion here.

Is it right to hate the bankers?

Richard Jackson | 07:52 UK time, Friday, 4 December 2009

We've been talking about The National Audit Office which is saying that the Treasury was justified to use taxpayers' money to bail out the banks. The potential bill for supporting them has now reached an extraordinary figure of 850 billion pounds.

There's a lot of resentment and anger directed at the bankers; for their high bonuses and having to bail them out in the first place. But is it justified? Do you think they're arrogant to ask for more money after the taxpayer has bailed them out?

Or maybe you think people should ease off them - they weren't the ones to cause the global economic crisis so shouldn't be blamed? 0500 909 693.

Have you forgiven...?

Have you forgiven your partner's transgressions?

Tiger Woods has said that he regrets his mistakes with all of his heart and 'will strive to be a better person' and the husband his family deserves.

Today's papers have more rumours about his marriage - but have you ever been in a similar position? What mistakes have you managed to get over? Or are there just some things you can never forgive?

That's our phone-in at 9. Call 0500 909693.
