Is socialism dead?

Post categories:

Richard Jackson | 08:17 UK time, Monday, 9 November 2009

On the phone-in this morning - is socialism dead? With world leaders joining thousands of people in the German capital to mark the 20 years since the Berlin Wall came down, was that the moment when Europe changed forever?

It was seen as a triumph for the free-West - and of the failure of the East. Capitalism was the winner over communism. Did it also mean that socialist politics in the rest of Europe took a battering.

So - 20 years on - is socialism dead - or can left-wing politics rise again?

Mr Jackson, can I call you Richard?
Well, Dick, what an unwise thing to posit. I have been viewing the way "socialism" is treated Stateside and in between scratching my head - laughing the while. I call it a slightly left of centre - my own view on stuff but I feel I would be portrayed by the more entused USA opponent - as the sort who would be yelling to an Old Soviet figurehead to "come over towards my point of view" - to his (Old Soviet Figurehead's) left. No offence Old Soviet etc but no - we need all spectrum of politics - Right Left and centre.
SUBJECT: THAT CHANGED THE FACE OF EUROPE
ANAGRAM: DNA – FOE THOUGHT (CARE)PEACH – FETE
Peach? Do tell? See Dickie - do not make too hurried assumptions - I am here to tell you.

How timely, coming so quickly on the back of Capitalism's shining example of its indisputible wonderousness. Your finger and the pulse - truly inseperable.

Socialism's been as dead as the electorate's ability to think beyond tabloid headlines since Michael Foot's anorak last saw Westminster keylights. That was the last time we had a true Socialist alternative. Kinnock began the Toryisation continued by John Smith and encapsulated in Tony "Margaret" Blair.

Perhaps you could next do a phone-in on apartheid on South Africa.

socialism saved this country from going entirely down the pan .. though were pretty much in it to our necks.

china and islamic banks have remained fairly untouched and the latter certainly saved barclays.

why would any person in the media want socialism at all ..

Depends if proper socialism is applied and not the system regarded as socialism in places like the former USSR, Cuba, Costa Rica,Venezuala. That was never socialism but state capitalism as Dave Nellist, former expelled Labour MP for being a socialist quite rightly put across in conversation with a clearly perplexed Nicky Campbell!

I'm not into personality politics but it's because the likes of Nellist were expelled throughout the Kinnock led witchhunts during the 80's that the modernised New Labour government is facing a crushing defeat at the polls due to it's Tory free market policies!

Sure Nellist can speak up for himself but the fact his type of genuine non-careerist politician are rarely heard on the air exposes the imbalance of political reporting and coverage on the BBC today due to the parliamentary all party bi-partisan consensus!

You keep peddling this claptrap put about by a tory press. The recessio was caused by greedy, short-sighted people, in the US, and this government is getting us out of it, by being altruistic and long-sighted.

    You should learn from them.

I do not need to quote the tory press. I have stated the FACTS which you just cannot bear to read \ hear.

The facts are that the bankers take rightly their share of the blame but so does Gordon 'No more boom and Bust' Brown for his dreadful stewardship of the economy as a whole. Poor regulation, the toothless FSA which he[Brown] created and his tax and waste policies which will we will be paying for for decades - not that you care as you pay \ paid little if any tax.

Please learn something about the world you live in.

Gordon Brown has just been given an award for his handling of this crisis.

Your lot would have us still in it, and are still using it as an excuse, if they get in again, to cut money to the poor and make them even poorer, which is all they are really about.

We are the last of the developed countries STILL in a recession. The gap between the rich and poor has WIDENED under Labour.

You are just worried that when the tories get in the free lunch will end.

Please do stick to the facts rather than the usual ideological hatred of conservatism.

Robbie, we're only the last to come out of it, cos we've spent less, and that's due to fear of people like you, who would spend nothing and have us still in it.
