Breakfast in Berlin

Gillian Edmonds | 16:57 UK time, Friday, 6 November 2009

berlin_wall.jpgMonday's breakfast show will see Nicky broadcasting from Berlin. It's the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall- the day thousands of East Berliners flooded the checkpoints demanding- and getting- entry to the West.

We'll be alongside Checkpoint Charlie hearing what it was like then and what it's like now.
Our correspondent Jonny Dymond will report from across Berlin as we assess how far Germany has come since those momentous events of 1989.

Were you there at that time? What were you doing when the wall fell? We'd love to know.

We'll also be speaking to French artist Thierry Noir. During the eighties, Thierry was one of the first to cover the Berlin Wall in works of art. After the fall of the Wall, Thierry has worked to find and restore his (and other artists) paintings on a remaining 1.3km length of Wall - which now forms the East Side Gallery. Here's a sample of his work - you can find out more on his website.

    Gill,

I was stationed there before the wall came down, with the US Army . It truly was a unique city. Many different cultures, many things to do......but in some ways, you still felt confined. Went back as a tour guide after the wall came down and it was actually sad for me. At least I have many tales to tell my grandkids some day!

    Your Jackson Township friend....

What was on the eastern side of the old Berlin Wall was never communism but state capitalism! Sometimes labelled Stalinism!

The former USSR was never a communist or socialist country state albeit many journalists and international affairs 'experts' throughout your coverage of this anniversary today will be saying that it was!

From the Great Wall of China to the old foundations of the Berlin Wall. You just can't keep the ubiquitious Nicky Campbell down, can you!

I was in Berlin from 1973-1979 and what a city as a young soldier from the Scottish borders it opened my eyes to the world as it was my first overseas posting,we used to visit east Berlin and the difference was unbelievable it was so gray and drab.I have been back since 1989 but did not enjoy the city there was just something missing and I didn“t feel like a Berliner. when the wall came down I was living in the Hartz mountains on the inner German border and was on a border patrol the day before it all fell apart and remember the next few days as all the trabbies came over and there was just this blue smog hanging over the valleys from the 2 stroke engines and all these people driving round with big smiles on their faces fond memories of this time. I still live in Germany and seen a lot of changes in the last 20 years.

I think in terms of public ownership of the means of distribution, production and exchange, it's over in this country.

In terms of wealth redistribution, I hope it isn't.

The reverse will be true, of course, given a conservative victory next year.

I was living in Germany when the wall 'came down' - I remember the fear of many on the 'western' side that there would be trouble, financial and otherwise.

Why do persist in peddling this myth. It is a matter of FACT that the gap between the rich and poor was LOWER under the tories.

Still don't let the truth mask your ideological rants!

strangely i have never heard nicky speak in the same terms about the israeli apartheid wall as he does of the berlin wall.

in fact everything gets reversed whilst justifying israels abhorrent politics.
