Living with autism - tell us your story
What's it like living with autism?
The government's being accused of abandoning people with the condition to a life of hardship -- because many don't get the help they need to get a job. But what does having autism actually mean - how does it affect peoples' lives, the way they see the world...and the way the world sees them? Are you autistic? Maybe a relative is? How does it affect your life? You can get involved in the discussion in many ways:

That's the phone-in with Nicky from 9.

How in the name of heaven can we discuss a condition with such a large and varied degree of 'affliction'?
This morning will be just another phone in for people who are affected while the rest of us just sit and listen.
btw The father speaking has just called it a mental illness, I was under the impression it was a mental condition. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes 5 live is degenerating into a platform for the mawkish, sentimental, and minority interests. After this minority interest in autism, which no doubt will end up in a parade of parents moaning about schools where they can't get little jonnie into a specialist school or get him sectioned(or what ever the council is supposed to do) , we will then have Victoria Derbyshire wallow in some sentimental issue for an hour.

While I'm sure that covering autism is indeed a noble and worthwhile activity, why aren't you covering the Guardian being gagged by Carter-Ruck from questions being asked in Parliament?

Don't be silly msg 3 - that would involve proper journalism.

Oh gawd, just how apt it is that we discuss Autism on the new bog missage boreds. Autism, an neurological disorder, caused by a lack of social interaction and communication, influenced by restrictive behavioural traits in infancy?
One does ponder as to why this is being discussed in these days of enlightenment and instant feedback on this bog, of all places, having our editors in chief guide us through our talk. I am off to the Grauniad now as they discuss real issue, such as why are we being gagged, by Carter Ruck et al.

14.10.09 - Yet another phone in for people to recount tales of their own experience and today's chosen subject is 'bullying'.
This are not topical discussions they are just platforms for people to retell their tales of woe.
There are more than enough important stories in the news to discuss other than these 'human' issues. Very poor.

The reason that discussions like the one about autism are so important and relevant is obvious, having read all the other blog comments. Clearly, there is little understanding about autistic spectrum disorders and little appreciation of how much autism effects so many peoples' lives. I found the phone-in enlightening, interesting and at times, extremely sad, given the number of individual stories that showed just how little appreciation and support currently exists for people with autism. Open your eyes and ears . . you might just learn something.

Well thank you for that. I do have experience of both aspergers and severe autism but a 5 live phone in is not the place to discuss such issues. It is supposed to be a news and current affairs forum discussing news and current events and that is why I am angered that they keep discussing 'human interest' stories. All discussion so this nature turn out being is a platform for people to tell their side of a story - we have no idea whether they are telling the truth or not.

Sorry that should read - all discussions of this nature turn out being...

What makes something 'news' or 'current'? Surely if it's something that effects such a huge number of people then by its very nature, it's newsworthy. Without phone-in discussions and forums such as this, how can awareness of a subject such as autism ever be raised and heard by a wider audience?

The remit of Radio 5 Live is to be BBC Radio's home of continuous news and live sports coverage. It should aim to bring its audience major news stories and sports events as they happen, and provide context through wide-ranging analysis and discussion.
That is the remit of 5 live and although I understand your point of view, there are hundreds of support organisations for families with members on the autistic spectrum. It is not possible 'discuss' individuals personal experiences on a phone in and that is my main bugbear.

My experience as an autistic; I recieved no help in my years at methwold high school NORFOLK,from 1998-2002, I was put on report everyday I had so many detentions constantly i had a swearing aggressive attitude induced from child abuse at home and from watching 18 certificate films all the time.I was punched in the spine by a boy called BEN at this school it has permeneantly damaged my spine,I did not tell anyone because the teachers were all spitefull to me just like most of the peers,I did not speak to my mother as she didn't care and was a drunk.I was bulemic and I did not speak to people as i did not trust them .At no point was I ever questioned by an intelligent interlectual(non teacher) for having autism. I have only just found out at 23 what was wrong with me after many years of self harm. I am livid, YOU LET ME DOWN -I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR BIG SALARIES YEE THAT PUNISH CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES
