What is Britain's most dangerous drug?

Post categories:

George Edmonds | 06:44 UK time, Thursday, 29 October 2009

cannabis.jpgEcstasy, LSD and cannabis are less harmful than alcohol and cigarettes, according to the Government's most senior drugs adviser.

Professor David Nutt wants a new 'index of harm' that'll highlight the relative dangers of various substances. He says alcohol should rank fifth, behind cocaine, heroin, barbiturates and methadone, while tobacco should rank ninth, ahead of cannabis, LSD and Ecstasy.

You can read more on the story on BBC News: Cannabis evidence 'was distorted'

Do you agree with Professor Nutt? Is alcohol more harmful than cannabis, LSD and Ecstasy? Which drug has caused you the most harm? What do you think is Britain's most dangerous drug?

You can get involved in the Phone-in in many ways:

And you can follow the debate live between 9 and 10 with 5 live Now, which pulls together you contributions in one page. Find out more about 5 live Now.

Nutt is living up to his name. How he managed to get this high profile situation with this attitude is beyond me. An index of harm. Now there's a thought. Sadly some people live just too literal a life and will think number 10 on the list must be OK.

Nutt should resign. I hope the ministers in charge of policy concerning illegal and dangerous drugs stand up to him and see him off.

We do not need the likes of D.Bell attempting to deny all debate of the affect of drugs.

There is nothing immoral about taking drugs to get a narcotic effect.
Remove the scare stories and blame culture perpetrated by the likes of Bell and people will then understand the actual effects of drugs, be they positive or negative and be able to recognise those effects.

Illegality helps no one but profiteering criminals & actively disuades those who would benefit from help from seeking it.

Those who are against drugs are fundamentally aligned against personal freedom and are beyond contempt.

    I agree with brenticles.

Is Debra Bell suggesting that we should lie to people about the relative harm of drugs?

What is the point of a classification system if it's determined by people's prejudice. No wonder it is difficult to trust 'authorities' when they cannot tell it as it is.

I have never taken a drug but I have always told my now adult children that on the evidence drugs like ecstacy for example appear to be relatively harmless - much more chance of dying from a peanut allergy. Result - I have terrific discussions with my kids about all kinds of things, they don't use drugs, they don't smoke and they drink moderately.

There are few areas of politics so corrupted by pointless posturing and craven attitudes. For me, whether the issue about reclassifying cannabis is just part of a wider malaise. Of course cannabis shouldn't be class B, but it shouldn't be class anything it should be legal.

The war on drugs is a monumental failure. Our drugs policies are hypocritical, inconsistent, ineffective and unjust. Drug use has risen massively, drug-related crime with it and yet the answer from this government is to ignore common-sense, expert advice and plough on with a failed policy simply to be 'tough on drugs'.

There is nothing 'tough' about perservering with a failed policy because you are too afraid of seeming 'soft' on drugs.

Prohibition doesn't work for us, it creates work for organised crime.

    I agree totally.

There are far too many po-faced individuals such as the opening poster and D.Bel; and quite frankly its none of their business what I drink, smoke, swallow or snort.

The drugs laws are complete joke and the so called 'War on drugs' is bogus and will never be won.

Mmmmm. Working with heroin addicts for years. Cannabis users referred to where I worked because they were the unfortunate ones affected by a cannabis psychosis. Working on a research project connected to Ecstasy and its long term affects on the brain. I just don't know what I am talking about with all that experience. I obviously couldn't care less what RobbieFiveFingers and his ilk ingest, just leave a few people to worry about you all and have to look after your health when you find it is too late. Sucker.

The most dangerous drug is nicotine by a mile. 100,000 thousand tabacco related deaths a year, as opposed to 30,000 alcohol deaths and 100 heroin deaths a year. Nicotine is more addictive than opiates. One out of three smokers will die of smoking related disease, no other drug gets near this but it depends what you mean by dangerous.
