Will you need to be vetted?

Post categories:

How far should we go to protect our children? New rules mean that people who drive children around for sport or social clubs may have to undergo criminal checks. It's designed to protect children from paedophiles but critics say it's "insulting" to parents and volunteers. Isn't it right that we should do everything in our power to keep children out of harm's way? Or is this unnecessary over-reaction that will discourage people from volunteering for anything that brings them into contact with kids or vulnerable adults.

That's the phone-in with Nicky from 9 this morning. Text us on 85058, email breakfast@bbc.co.uk or post a message here.

    Hi
As often the case it is the question that is wrong. I have no less than 5 certificates to say that I have been vetted to work with children. And i know of people who have more.
What the real question is why are we allowing predatory paedophiles lose in society? Certification only limits to a minor extent the possible access paedophiles have to their prey.
It is argued that they cannot be separated from the rest of society because of their human rights! What about the right of children not to be molested not to mention the right for the rest of us to roam without suspicion? I am lucky, I have a wonderful son. If I take him to the park all is well. However I would not sit alone on a park bench without feeling uncomfortable.
Where are my son’s human rights?
    Where are my human rights?

I even have to pay for the privilege of allowing these perverted people lose in society.

Surely the question should be why are Paedophiles are released into society when we know that they will harm children?

At the very least they should all be visibly tagged.

    Regards

The frustration with CRB is that it does put off volunteers. I currently have 3 different CRB's
1 for Education (job as IT technician)
    1 for Boys Brigade (volunteer)
1 for England Hockey with my club, and now the are doing an internal link to register me with my local county association.

So I will have 4 live CRBs

A CRB lasts for three years befor you have to go thru the process of filling the form in again. The only problem is that the CRB is out of date as soon as you recieve the certifcate back.

There needs to be 1 central system, so that I dont have to fill in a form for every organisation, but have my details checked when ever required, by having 1 Passport that i give to the organisation so they can contact their umbrella organisation and either pass or revoke my details.

As a Club sec for a youth football club I will have to issue guidance for parents which if wrong will make me liable.

We already CRB, through the FA, coaches and helpers who maybe left in charge of children on their own.
We need parents to offer giving lifts to peoples children to get them to matches, but this looks like we can't help organise it because this will be construed as a club request and then fall within this legisation or will it?.

    Where is the simple guidance?
Where is the form of words for clubs?

I don't have a problem with the checks but this system is confusing...I already have 4 CRB disclosures for different organisations. I know of one person who has 20+.
This system is seriously short on efficiency which brings into question how effective it actually is!.

you can have as many checks as you want, the "sickos" will always beat the system.

    simple as

    thats the issue

i am a school governor and have got CRB clearance. i was asked to help out in my scons football team a few months ago and i told them-dont worry ive got CRB due to being a Governor. i was told you a seperate one for the football team team-

why cant one clearance do for all

but that of course is too simple and we have to be seen to make work for all these public sector employees !!!!

Why is it assumed that everybody who helps out is now a sexual predator who will attack and maim children.

Just about everyone who helps out in this manner is a decent caring person, who are happy to give up their time to support voluntar organisations and sports clubs which can make a massive difference to people's lives.

As a Beaver leader and Scout assistant leader I am fed up with the red tape that surrounds every activity and application. Yes a background check should be made upon joining an organisation, but once udertaken that certificate should be eligible for all situations. My mum, as a teacher, had to get a seperate one when she helped at an afterschool homework club with the same pupils she taught during the day. Surely this is a waste of resources - government savings here!

But only if they've been detected, convicted and put on the register.

This government seems to have a talent for poorly-designed largely ineffective legislation, no matter how well-intentioned, that inconveniences and restricts the lives of those of us who choose to obey the laws of the nation but has absolutely no effect on those that choose to break them.

It is a strange world that children should look at all adults as potential pedophiles. Surely there could be a far more moderate response that wouldn't affect the trust that there should be between adult and child.
