What were you doing when you were 15?

Olie D'Albertanson | 09:39 UK time, Wednesday, 22 July 2009

daley_203_152_2.jpgI was learning to play the guitar, playing football and generally throwing teenage strops. Out of those three I'm still doing two of them consistently, and one of them I've had to stop because of knee injury!

At the age of 15 Tom Daley has becomes Britain's first individual diving World Champion. This is a proper bit of sporting history.

You might have known Tom's name ever since he qualified to represent Team GB at the Beijing Olympics in the 10m diving event. Not bad for a then 13 year old to come 7th.

On Breakfast this morning we managed to catch up with this precocious talent:

I was gauche and untalented. A bit shy and not very worldly. How unlike Tom - I was amazed how he handled the interviews; like a seasoned professional. It would have been understandable if Tom had been daunted by the hysteria for a piece of him? Not a bit of it; he came across as modest, calm, polite.

Even when someone hit him with the killer question: So what of your relationship now with Brett Aldridge? dragging up, of course, Toms unhappy experience with his erstwhile diving partner, with whom he suffered a very public conflict in full spotlight of the worlds media when 24-year old Aldridge who by all accounts hadnt covered himself in glory chose to divert attention by publicly blaming Daley for their failure to win a medal. A horrible episode for anyone, no matter how mature, but surely especially troubling for a then-14 year-old who then staggered straight into a period of vicious jealous abuse from his school mates, resulting in him being forced to move schools by his concerned parents.

Can Tom have been coached for the Aldridge question? It may have been touched upon after the Olympics but the lad has had plenty on his mind of late. And for goodness sake hed only just pulled himself from the water having beaten the cream of the worlds athletes at his chosen sport. But did he fluff and bluster? Did he look pleadingly at his father? Or did he react as many teenagers would surely have done in similar circumstances, with a biting response along the lines of Well I sure as hell showed him!

    Not a bit of it!

Well, said Tom, calmly addressing the worlds media, we havent been in touch for a while but if he called me there wouldnt be a problem.

Surely no smoothly coached politician, chief executive or celebrity ever delivered a line - - code for He can go boil his head - with such charm or apparent sincerity. When this young man retires from athletics he should consider becoming PM.

    Well done Thomas. Well done.

I was avoiding sport - if I could. Lazy to a fault. Coiuld have won Gold Medals in avoidance tactics.

Talking of alleged avoidance - mis-speaking. Radio Four presenters rarely do - Romeo and Juliet family - film/family - nice one.

Film Crew Three seen yesterday - certainty given. Thanks.

But mis-speaking - by the time I came back from London - a Minister had seemingly and allegedly done a U turn on a sensitive subject. A Prime Ministers was able to speak perhaps with more authority?

That is why they - politicians look so odd - or on radio - sound so odd. Radio highlights stuff soundwise. "Just Connect" - the maths teams saw the name of one politician alongside Tom Jones (singer) an Archbishop of Canterbury and a who cares - and suggested what connected them was "spin". lol

It seems all had won "Beard of the Year" award. Singeing the King Of Spins Beard perhaps? lol

Subject: A traitor in his own words could finally come true after all
Anagram: I no twist hair dna sorrow Moor - late (Calendar Cue) lift fully

    Tom dives! Tom wins. Simples!

    Well done!
