Nicky at the Last Ever Royal Show

Harriet Oliver - 5 live journalist | 06:28 UK time, Friday, 10 July 2009

Today we're broadcasting from the last ever Royal Show in Warwickshire. It's the UK's biggest agricultural show and despite being the last one, it's as vibrant, busy and noisy as ever. Here are some of the people we've met:

So a dying event in the heart of middle England is entitled to a 5 Live outside broadcast!

Agriculture is one of the most heavily subsidised industries in the world because people 'need' to eat and market forces cannot always be relied upon to provide the 'goodies'! Yet many bourgeouse farmers who you've interviewed still claim they're not being looked after by governments.

One even had the nerve to say that this is because Labour is a more 'urban' party. Even if that was true it hardly stands up. Don't urban people eat?

5 Live - Victoria's 'Should the NHS Pay' page doesn't work. It keeps coming up Error 404. Thanks.

    Nicky and Shelagh.

The umpteenth disappointment - the umpteenth promise broken. Or is it brokered?

I take as my lesson toady - only put out celebrities matter in this Royal Show of ours. Ferguson and Shearer on the front page - Johnnie nobodies - who cares if their phones are hacked into? No money in it for Law Suits - eh QCs? New Lamps for Old again. Deputy PMs, PR gurus, foul mouthed chefs perhaps etc etc.

The MoPs - the City Fat Cats and even Fatter Cows. No wonder the Royal Show is past its best by date. They plan to go out in a big blast do they not?

The press is COWED, I am afraid and so are they - afraid I mean.

    Boo!

    lol

I am sorry to see this institution disappear. It may not serve the same purpose as in the old days but was a place for broadening many minds and introducing ideas to the public that they may not have understood from just reading a newspaper. I am sorry to see Nick Vinehill as usual has to make it a political point.

Can we not just keep some things for sheer tradition and enjoyment, why does everything have to be linked to class?

    Agree with you, Carrie.

Disappointing but entirely predictable that NC had to have the usual ignorant, chippy, class warriors on his programme spouting ill-informed nonsense.

Personally, I buy British produced food whenever I can.

I agree with both carrie and Sarnia - I prefer to buy British where I can, especially meat. I have seen some frozen chicken fillets from one of the South American countries and I had to wonder about the quality controls over there. I know we aren't perfect but I still prefer to buy British.

Nothing to do with the subject but the format change to the blog isn't great - could you reinstate the comments link to the bottom of the piece?

I do try and buy local produce whenever I can as I think from an environmental point of view it just makes sense. I've also took on an allotment to try and grow some veggies there and in our small garden - I'm not that green fingered but just dug up some new potatoes and they taste sublime! I think the future will see an inevitable shift to more people producing their own food wherever they can as future food security is so uncertain.
Check out the permaculture videos on YouTube (just type 'permaculture' or 'forest gardening' in the search field) and it's quite amazing - especially Geoff Lawton's 'Greening the Desert'- if you can make an arid part of the desert productive using no chemicals just permaculture design then there is hope for the future! Also, Michael and Julia Guerra who have produced amazing garden in their back yard in London. If they can do it here anyone can do it. P.s I'm no hippy type just a normal person concerned with what we are doing to our food and where it comes from...

The Royal Show used to be a must do, for farmers and anyone interested in the counrtyside. Far from saying that you shouldn't have an OB today, I say why have you not been every year!! Could we perhaps see Nicky at the Bath & West or New Forest Show. It's a poor show when you cannot do something nice for fear of complaint.
