Is Roger Federer the greatest sportsperson ever?

Post categories:

Harriet Oliver - 5 live journalist | 07:33 UK time, Monday, 6 July 2009

federer_203_152.jpgYesterday Federer broke world records after winning Wimbledon - as his white and gold jacket testified he now has 15 Grand Slam titles under his belt. It was an epic match, proving Federer has grit and determination as well as talent, so does anyone match Federer's dominance in tennis in their own sport?

What makes a great sportsperson? Skill - definitely, endurance and courage - for sure, but what about playing by the rules, being a sporting gentlemen. Is it just about notching up wins or is attitude as important?

Not whilst I draw breath, Harriet Oliver.

But seriously - no. He is a very very good tennis player. Look in the history books for persons who have represented their countrys in several sports at a International level. Federer was asked why he was such a "nice person too"? lol He is - bless 'im but I tried it and it does not work.

    On to other matters.

    Incoherent, in my opinion.

Ms Sarah Palin and her recent utterances but we - the Press - still try too understand what she has just said? A higher calling? Why must politicians alway be so obtuse?

Talking of great sportsmen - I was in the Guildhall Art Gallery the other day and there was a picture of someone surname Kemble dressed as Coriolanus and looking the spit image of an Eric Cantona forbear. I am not a man I am CANTONA! - said hopefully tongue in cheeck in Looking for Eric film but in real life?

Cantona's Trawlers and fish statement oft quoted too but I believe our leg-ends were being pulled by the former Man Utd player.

I say what I mean, Harriet.

Exactly that and am amazed at the gullibility of everyone when a celebrity talks nonsense and it is reported straight-faced.

Hence my constant irritation that I cannot function whilst the Americans and British Establishment take time to get over themselves.

Quangos. Contempt of Court indeed, Peter Clark. I know it is nowt to do with me but idly who has been arrested I wondered? Whose trial can be affected? Who is due for trial I ask again?

During MY detention - arrests have been made and people let go and all the while I wait and wait whilst oh look

Subject: from your mouth into God's ear
Anagram: Yo furious - Grandmother moot

    Another meeting! lol

I plan to misbehave now a la Cantona and that fan in the crowd incident.. Wimbledon over so that is the summer gone. Star Fish orifices, BO over there in Yo-Yo land who cares. I plan to post and the devil take the hindmost. Censor away people I am done with you again!

Which means I am not the greatest sportsman anymore.

    Ok Roger - take it!lol

Yaaaawwwnnnnnnn. Morning all. Predictable and totally superficial. Sport phone ins belong on the later sport programmes and not on a news programme when we should be thrashing out the fire, the attempted cover up yet again by the government of something dodgy costing thousands of ordinary people their livelihoods, or at least China and the unrest.

how can anybody say the williams sisters success story is not one of the greatest is beyond me they are to the womens game what federer and nadal are super star players but what is truely great about the serena and venus storyis the humble beginings they came from liveing in a inner city area of compton los angeles and being 2 african american girls who have gone on and reached the top against all the odds especially as tennis is such a middle class elite sport there story is one of the greatest of all time alongside what there father and them girls have done will never be repeated again

Whether you like it or not the greatest sportsman is Phil Taylor the darts player.
He's won 14 world titles over 75 other major championships and over 130 professional tournaments. He's remained pretty much number 1 for nearly 20 years.

I out myself as a (Monday) Guardian reader. Today in Media Monkey there is a very very important subject that could have been used for this phone in: What do you think of Nicky Campbell's CD of songs due to be released?

Much more fun and more interesting, even if it is a joke.

Federer may or may not be the greatest sportsman/human being in this history of the universe but he's not good at time keeping! They have been hanging on for ages for the great man to appear for an interview which wouldn't have been worth waiting for in the first place!

How do you feel about winning Wimbledon etc etc ..... yawn, yawn, yawn.......

Great tennis player, great champ. The greatest sportsman? Why not ask which is the best number 1, 7, 19 or 1,265?

Can we move on and talk about some current affairs now. The tennis was done very welel by 5Live last night. This phone-in is not only diluting the professionalism of the coverage yesterday, but also knocking Federer's great acheivement less than 24 hours after his victory by inviting comparison with great champions from different backgrounds, competing in different sports in totally different eras.

What's going on in Korea, China and Iran today?

Asking if Federer is the greatest sportsman ever is in many ways a ridiculous question, and it's impossible to be completely objective in responding to it.

I watched the Wimbledon mens singles final yesterday and not only was impressed by Fedrerers skill achievement in winning the match, but i was touched by his post match comments......he was complementary to Roddick, Nadal and other great champions. I found that refreshing and consider that to be a mark of a great champion.

However tennis is an elitist sport.......most people on this planet don't get the opportunity to play tennis ....... .......approximately 99.99% of the population of China, Korea and Iran will not have the option of ever playing tennis..... most children growing up in inner city Liverpool, Sheffield, and Manchester who do not attend the "right" schools won't play tennis.

I don't even believe that Rogers achievement outweighs that of the Williams sisters as they as they have been able to overcome numerous social, cultural and economic barriers to reach pinnacle of their sport.

    sorry Roger

in my opinion Jesse Owens was the greatest sportsperson ever. in the span of 45 minutes in May, 1935 he set 3 new world records and equaled a fourth. At the Berlin Olympics the following year in winning four gold medals and in doing so ridiculed the concept of aryan racial superiority

Roger Federer is only one grand slam ahead of his nearest competition. Sir Don Bradman averaged 99.9 the nearest competition is in the fifties and sixties. Not even Mohamed Ali dominated his sport the way that bradmam did. And I say this as an Englishman desperately hopeful that England will win the summer's major sporting event - The Ashes

Poster Number Nine. Mr Taylor - I have great admiration for his achievements in darts but.......

Moving your body sideways on the ockee and the action of a throwing arm isn't "sport" in my opinion.

It is a game. A public house game at that. I love playing it too.

That skit in Not the 9 O'clock News where drinks replaced darts was cruel but I took the point.

Of course it it doesn't matter who whether or or not Roger Fedrerer is the greatest sportsperson. Its a better question than for instance......Compare and Contrast the respective sporting contributions of Roger Federer and Phil Taylor. Pay particular attention to how successful they have been in overcoming any social economic and cultural boundaries. Any attempt to justify their greatness in terms of the world wide sale of sporting merchindising will be disregarded........etc etc

Anyway I suspect next March following the winter Olympics that Roger's greatness will be surpassed some yet unknown plucky Englishman who has just missed out on a gold medal in a sport 97.43% of us were not aware existed until we stayed up until 3.00am to watch the final on TV
