Is golf the only sport where players don't cheat?

Post categories:

Harriet Oliver - 5 live journalist | 07:51 UK time, Friday, 17 July 2009

Think of the Tour de France, the Olympics - events where spectators are disappointed but not surprised if the competitors are caught taking performance enhancing drugs.

Think of football where diving is regular practise among some players, rugby and Schalk Burger's eye-gouging. Ricky Ponting says England's players used delaying tactics in the first test of the Ashes.

Sandy Lyle has caused a furore by accusing Colin Montgomery of cheating four years ago; Monty was cleared of that. The R & A say they've introduced drugs tests at this year's Open, but do you expect golfers to be caught doping?

From 9am on the phone-in Nicky will be asking if golf is the only sport where players don't cheat.

So this mornings phone-in is about golf! Cue people with their boring golfing stories. Pathetic suject about a minority interest game.

Many footballers who clearly cheat regularly also play golf. What confidence do we have in their honesty, particularly when they are out of sight of their playing partners?

Do they call a penalty on themselves when they ground their club in a hazzard out of sight of others?

It is worrying to see footballers appeal for throw ins, for example, when they know they have kicked the ball out themselves. This is common practice.

Eldridge Woods cheated on 2005 when he replaced his ball 2 yards closer to the hole than its original position after it had been moved by his partner's approach shot.
I remember the crowd shouting and booing him for it. Maybe the BBC could repeat the incident as they managed to avoid showing it in their highlights show and it has been airbrushed ever since.

The 10th or 11th hole of his 2nd round. It's not too late for him to be thrown out of golf and Colin Montgomery given his Open Championship. Athletes have lost Olympic medals from 2000 so why not the biggest chat in golf?
