Breakfast at the 2012 Olympics site

Post categories:

Harriet Oliver - 5 live journalist | 12:38 UK time, Sunday, 26 July 2009

It's three years to the day until the London 2012 Olympics gets underway and we've been given access to the site in Stratford.

Have a look at the pictures and hear Nicky's reports from the stadium on today's programme. Our reporter Stephen Chittenden has visited the rest of the site, including the Aquatics Centre. Plus at 9 o'clock, Shelagh will be asking if London 2012 is inspiring you.
For example, are you or your children playing more sport? Or will the games only affect London?

the work is looking fantastic for the 2012 olympics so far lets hope we win some decent medals in events like the athletics, gymnastics, badminton, and swimming and aquatics and other majority sports in the olympics instead of winning minority elite sports like rowing, sailing, yingling and indoor cycling where we put the most money in and have the best science and technology that guarantees us medals if other countries had the same facilities and money in the third world and many developed countries we would struggle just like we do at most other olympic events where the competition is there i dont know if it was a coincidence but most of our medals were won in sports where we were sat down

im just listening to the show most people liveing in deprived areas in britain buy lottery tickets every week even though they are at the bottom of the food chain and its there money that pays for the athletes in order to train and live for how many years it takes them to go and compete when the olympics comes round but the money does not go to the deprived communites where the future stars are born it all goes to the top in order to win a few medals in elite minority sports like rowing, sailing, yingling and indoor cycling

What legacy for the velodrome? We already have a world-class one here in Manchester which will no doubt be retired after 2012.

i suspect most of the previous olympic host state broadcasters didnt critcise their olympics and projects and helped sell the idea of a 'legacy' as a matter of course.

i suspect that the brown envelope brigade of these host nations (ie vested interests) also crowed about the benefits to the nation, the legacy who also however failed to state their financial gains and rewards.

anyway with respect to todays phone in: the bbc claims to be impartial and yet clearly shelagh was not.

anyway i suspect we will have 3 years of on going propaganda/hype from the government and the olympic organisers to have us all thinking 'the right way'by 2012.

anyone care about 'breaking the silence' report or is that too off message?

do you really think there would be an olympics and a spend of 10 billion if all of it really went to the bottom - the deprived the poor and the top did not gain any benefits?

Well lets give this a chance at least.

I accept the cost is high and money could be better spent elsewhere but that is another debate for in the future.

Its good the building work is going well and hopefully our athletes can do the country proud in these tricky times.

The worse thing would be for this to be a flop on and off the track etc.

So why is "Jarsper" Shrig - here in Great Britain? If all the races are being run - Stateside?

I will come back for the proper Olympics. In 2012.

This country has no idea how to treat its dreadfully modest and self effacing Champions.
