Can Andy Murray win Wimbledon?
It was tense, it was thrilling, but it took Andy Murray five sets - and almost four hours - to beat Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round at Wimbeldon.
The crowd under the Centre Court roof was right behind him but Murray had to battle back again and again against a Swiss player who shouldn't really have given him many problems.
Were you there? Did you see it? What did you think of how he played?
Can he now go all the way to the final and win it?

What a ridiculous idea for a phone in. Yesterday it was Rugby, today it's tennis. Andy Murray might win Wimbledon, he might not. He might run off with the Umpire or whatever you call him. Who knows? There are important things to be discussed in the country and yet again you pick a sports based subject. Sometimes, well most of the time these days, I despair at your thought processes.

Can I just add, I also expect the anti-Scottish, anti-English mob to be in full flow today as well.

No.
"Looks pretty serious"? Said by Robert of peston on my radio this morning, Harriet. Radio Fours Today I am afraid.
Murray winning Wimbledon - Wimbleton as our USA friends might say also "You cannot be serious!".
I was a true Brit back in the day but saw parts of the four hour thing last night and thought - it is only going to get tougher, Andrew me lad.
That wild carder next is it? To beat to reach the last four. Good luck anyway.
But Robert Peston wasted - just to say "Looks pretty serious"? Look you?
My goodness. Someone is - in all modesty - playing world class verbal ping pong and he cannot get a byline - allegedly.
He can hit a bass line seemingly but a baised Hawkeye - last of the Mow-he-cans (well it is grass after all) says "Out"!
Morgan - a suitable case for treatment - between changing ends perhaps? What was that actors name - Worner was it? lol

Can Murray win Wimbledon?
Of course he can. He's No. 3 in the world and he's beaten Nadal, Federer (the last 4 times they've played) and Djokovic. He's won the recent Queen's tournament, several Masters tournaments, and a handful of others. He's the second highest seed in the draw.
Of course he can! What else does he have to do to silence the doomsayers?
It's so typically (and depressingly British) to say "Oh well he won a tough matvh, but he shouldn't have been so difficult. It's so typically (and depressingly British) to find fault with a Brit who has just won, for heaven's sake!!
Give the guy some credit and get behind him. It's the sign of a great player to win when you're not playing well. And he did just that.
He can win, but will need to play well lto do it. What's new? Same goes for eveyone else in the draw.

i agree with the caller just on now devon who says andy murrays game is outdated the lad is a percentage player he does not have enough in his locker to beat the big boys who have the all round technical game murray is a decent player at best but he will have to up his game big time if he wants to get anywhere near the likes of federer and nadal take the football last night where our players got a football lesson from the germans in the u21 euro finals where they played the percentage game like murray did its not rocket science if you dont have no imagination and guile you dont win major sports events we go over the top in this country the biggest example of this is the senior england football team since 1966 we have won diddly squat

While the suggestion to let the players practice under the centre court roof makes sense, they should not do it now until next year. Conditions should be the same for everyone and Andy got blind-sided yesterday. And it could have cost him dear.
If they decide to close the roof again, Andy should be able to cash in on whatever he learned from yesterday's tough challenge and not be forced to yield this advantage.
Can he win it all? He sure can. But if he will have to play a more proactive game than he did yesterday. He he tries to rope-a-dope his way through it he will lose. If his first serve clicks and his aggression level is right, Andy can be champion.

I believe Andy can win Wimbledon he has the game, and the mental strength.
However, I think the scheduling is against him. look at how early in the day Federer has played all of his matches, and look at how long Federer has had to recover before yesterdays match ( a whole day longer than Murray).
I think the organisers are unwittingly giving Federer an advantage and perhaps because of TV ratings, Murray, if he gets to the final, will be running on less gas than Federer if he gets there too. To finish just before 11pm in the middle of a two week tournament seems crazy to me. Anybody ntice this, and any comments?

Murray is in line to face second seed Andy Roddick in Sunday's climax after the American edged past Croatian ninth seed Ivo Karlovic 7-6 7-6 in a match where serve totally dominated.

Your programme editors or whoever doesn't half get excited when they pick the subject for the hour long phone-in from 9 till 10!
Just because it was an unprecedented marathon match under a roof it's deemed as a worthwhile topic for an hour long phone-in discussion.
The question that was posed was ridiculous anyway. Can he win it! Pundits and listeners have been talking about this for weeks so surely if you are going to pose the same question again why not at least wait until he wins the semi-final, that's if he does hopefully!
What happened to that short phase 5 Live went through about a year ago when, during the 'phone-in' under Victoria (when it covered several items for 3 hrs until 12) there was such a controversial issue being discussed that your producers felt pressurised into asking for a text vote as to whether the discussion should continue. From then on for about two weeks you decided to let the listeners decide the topic but only on a Friday! Why not everyday?
By 6am your news editors have already decided what the main news items are. Why not before ..say 0830hrs conduct a text poll amongst listeners to decide which item is to be discussed?
