Nicky asks: Should illegal immigrants be allowed to stay?
On the phone-in today, Nicky's asking whether illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay? Thousands of campaigners are meeting in London to call for an amnesty. They argue these people are here anyway and giving them citizenship will give them a stake in society, allow them to pay tax, and stop employers exploiting them. Do you agree?

Although the whole 'illegals' situation has got completely out of hand I think that really strong measures are not needed. That will almost certainly mean defying the Human Rights legislation and the EC but the UK is in rather an unusal situation.
It should also be made very plain now that there is absolutely nothing here for those trying to get in without employment, the ability to speak English, fluently, and to have sponsors/employers to vouch for them as well as have housing.
A final question. Why is it that most of these people travel through a number of EC countries to get to the UK risking all sorts of problems to do so, yet they insist that the UK is where they want to be?
Our church has been looking after some legal immigrants who came with the promise of work which is no longer available. They are unable to get any assistance for finance or housing because they haven'tr been here for 12 months. So, what's the attraction?

I have lived in Ireland for 20 years and I cannot see any circumstances in which I would return to the UK
As bad as it is in Ireland at present it is still better than what I left behind.
A generalistion I know but in the most part people in the UK are xenophobic, and they are xenophobic beause of unfettered immigration. It is ludicrously blind thinking to allow this weight onto the system.
All aspects of society suffer
Health services become overloaded - many immigrant women become pregnant with the direct aim of remaining because the child can claim nationality for the child
Education services need more resources to cope with the plethora of languages to accommodated
Accomodation - indiginous people become aggrieved that housing stock goes to "foreigners"
Religious problems arise when the right to practice a religion grows into protected status with more protection than the original churches
Deporting thousands of immigrants is nearly impossible so the logical approach would seem to be close the door - IMMEDIATELY no steering committess no co-chaired bodies stop the immigration.
Then work through the system that exists.
In the mean time Any applications to stay should be assessed with the highest criteria
Will the person be able to support themselves do they have a sponsor to give them a job and reference
In the case of asylum on the basis of persecution the policies of other european countries and the social welfare benefits of the UK need addressing to make europe share the load
One last comment I have no doubt that comments like mine will be labelled as bigoted I don't think I am but who does, it is wrong not to speak your mind for fear of adverse views so i can live with it

Illegal immigrants are not the problem, if you offer someone from a third or second world country a house, a living wage, free education and health care of course they will come to the table. The problem is the people already here who are opening the door open for them and letting them all in at our expense - Labour, Lib Dems and the and Tories.
If you you import the third world into a first world country what you get is a second world country. Taxpayers deserve to live in a first world country and we will vote in a BNP government to preserve it.

This whole issue of illegal/legal Immigrants has equally turned a global concern just like Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Global Warming, Global Economic meltdown, it goes on and on. But the question is, where is the missing link?
Who slept over his/her duty in some times past? Before you push out anyone from whereever s/he is findings some respite, with all due respect, I would suggest we explore all other alternatives first. In all honesty, a lot of things that are happening in our world today are the makings of some people; their undoing, actions and inactions. So if we must punish all illegalities, then it should take a holistic dimension.

Didn't hear the phone in but so typical of unaccountable BBC executives to allow 5 Live producers to run yet another immigration related topic on a Bank holiday when most of Joe Public are far more easily influenced than usual!
Remember just before the recent Easter Bank hol? The whole nation was mesmerised by a number of terrorist arrests in north of England whom the Police and Whitehall claimed were about to launch major terrorist attacks throughout the UK!
What happened? No attacks and these alleged 'terrorists' released with no charge after 13 days in custody!
I was awaiting in anticipation of a subsequent phone in about their release particularly as 5 Live were well aboard the media bandwagon in presenting this pathetic scare story just before Easter!
Alas to no avail!

Have often wondered Nicky Campbell!
Being a ubiquitious journalist on BBC TV and Radio programmes presumably on account of your presentational and 'gift of gab' skills, do you or your colleagues have the right to challenge some of the forum type questions your bosses instruct you to host?
