Barcelona - a model club?

Richard Jackson | 07:39 UK time, Thursday, 28 May 2009

What lessons can we learn from Barcelona?

Manchester United were well beaten by an exceptional Barcelona side last night. The champions of England were humbled by the best team in Europe. On the pitch, Barcelona play with style and in Pepe Guardiola they have the best young manager in the game. As an organisation, the club is owned by its fans and donates its shirt sponsorship to UNICEF. Is the the way a football club should be run?

I doubt there is anybody out there to doubt what Barca have achieved this season except for their qualifying match against CHELSEA. Man U lacked the rigidiness that Chelsea had done until that 93min nightmare of believing to your play and forget about the dominance of possession, a weapon Barca have been using...

I didn't know and don't understand how Barca is run by its fans......and donates its shirt sponsorhip to UNICEF.

Well, how many fans run the club?
What credentials these fans should have?
Who controls their funds and profits?

I cannot say it's or it's not the best way a football club should be run, however if they really do that I give them credit on Humanitarian grounds.

In my opinion a football club should be owned by an organisation/partnership and probably with some sponsorship from other finance giants to guarantee smooth running of the club.

The defeat of MUFC by Barcelona (yes they are a model club, it is a no-brainer) is being treated as a national tragedy by Five Live. It has been going on for hours, all these simultaneous broadcasts and fans bemoaning their team's fate. It was a football match for goodness sake!!

More on this and those ridiculous music backed montages of the match and Alex Ferguson than on any important news event of the day. Five hostages in Iraq for two years, another soldier killed, Julie Kirkbride's intransigence, you name it, it is not as important as the unseating of what everyone on the station calls Manu.

    Get a grip, please.

What an absolute waste of a phone-in, AGAIN. We had a tedious football phone-in yesterday and you are at it again!

There are really important things going on around the world and you choose yet again to discuss football. Dumbing down again 5 live.

I suppose it keeps overpaid sports journos in beer money though.

I have been listening to the recent comments about how ethical Barcelona are with their links with Unicef and the way they run their club. Without doubt they are a very good side but we should not forget how their would-be Presidents unsettle players in other club as they set out their stall to become elected. I am an Arsenal supporter and every summer we hear stories about what stars Barcelona and Real Madrid are going to bring with to their clubs. I have to admit that once they have poached other clubs top men they do seem to blend them into a better team than the big money clubs in the Premiership.

why is it necessary to have a phone in two days on the trot about the same football match.

Not everyone likes or even cares about sport.

Sport should be like this. Barca playes with a lot of players that were allready Barca players in their youth. Sure they also bought a lot of players, but at least it is a start.

I thought that 5Live was supposed to be a NEWS and sports station, there should be a balance. It was football all last night and most of this morning. Not much balance there.

I agree about the journo trips to Rome though.

Rachel Burden's programme was a waste of time last night as well.

You should be ashamed of yourselves 5Live.

I'm one of the "fans" that owns FC Barcelona, the method is fair enough.

The club is owned by it's 130,000 fans, which every 4 years vote to elect a "Junta Directiva" which is leaded by a president (Joan Laporta right now), this group of people work for the club without any financial compensation (although they get their perks and expenses covered) and they can be sacked by the fans anytime during this four years if enough signatures are collected to do so (which hardly happens).

As a FC Barcelona fan we pay each year a club membership fee and that gives us access to reduced price tickets and use of the other installations that FC Barcelona have, also it gives you the right to have your season seat in the stadium, which is yours for life while you keep paying for it every year.

The club also have an excellent football base, from which the backbone of the current team have come, Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Puyol, Valdes, Pique and Busquests all started in FC Barcelona lower teams (Barça C and Barça B) from a young age.

About the t-shirt, as FC Barcelona is owned by the fans the only way to get publicity on the t-shirt is by the fans consent, which never happened until the actual president asked if it was okay to use that space for humanitarian causes, that's when Unicef came in and Barça is giving a part of the money for each t-shirt sold to them.

Agreed on both counts. Day Three of wall-to-wall coverage. Anyone would think it was the second coming of Christ!
