Shear joy or Shear madness?

What do you think about Alan Shearer being appointed manager at Newcastle United?
Whatever team you support, is Shearer the man for the job? Will he keep Newcastle in the Premier League?
A genius move, or shear folly? Is he the Messiah or is this a mess-up?

I'm still not convinced that this isn't an elaborate April Fool.

I have an April Fool vibe as well and even if it isn't, Who cares apart from Newcastle fans?

Absolutely love Newcastle fans. Living on the fact they are a top 4 side based on finishing 2nd over 10 years ago. Deluded they are. They have proved their loyalty this season, by the dipping attendances.

What with all the problems confronting the UK and the world , why on earth is Alan Sherarers appointmrent the lead item on your phone in today. It sends the message that the fortunes of Newcastle Utd FC are more important than the fortunes of everyone else or is this the message our rulers want. As long as peoples passions are guided by football the less will the politicians seem culpable from the economic and political problems that beset the country.
As far as his appontment is concerned its just another feel good factor appointment to create a quick fix. Geordie fans have been cock o hoop before over these 'Mesianic' managerial appointments. Sherarer was a good player and good pundit, but for someone who'se had no managerial experience he's only taking on the job now having threatened to do so before because if the club is relegated with only a few games left he won't get the blame!

People seem to be forgetting in their eagerness to deride his lack of experience that it doesn't matter one jot given Newcastle's current situation and the job he has to do. He is there (provisionally at least) for 8 games to save them from relegation. 8 games is usually about the length of the honeymoon period for most managers, and who could have a more successful honeymoon period than Alan Shearer? The players will be in awe of him, the fans will blow the roof off the stadium every home match and I wouldn't be in the least bit suprised if the sheer (or Shear!) momentum of his appointment carries Newcastle over the finish line with games to spare. Good luck Big Al, you're a legend for my team Blackburn as well as Newcastle and its absolutely brilliant to see you back in football.

BBC.. why do you love Newcastle so? It really is just you. Is it because Alan is on MOTD?
I still haven't got over you showing the dullest football match ever when you showed Keegan's returning first game as the lead game on match of the day.
0-0 bore. Really really poor match.
Yet someone thought it was worth showing as the best match that day..
Get some perspective BBC. The other Messiah is here too today

I am quite happy for them to continue their over the top reporting of Newcastle (remember the KK non-resignation?), as that club is a comedy goldmine.

I don't think a big football story is that much less important than the muppets who are primping and preening at the G20 summit. That's a REALLY pointless subject - we can't rely on politicians getting us out of this financial mess one iota.
But even as a Geordie I have to say Shearer is making a big mistake. Newcastle will go down because they have been totally mismanaged for years and it will serve the club - but not the fans - right in many ways. Eight managers in a decade speaks for itself. Also, only the players who don't manage to get themselves a move to a Premiership side in the summer will give a damn - filling their pockets is the most important thing in my view.
I only hope Ashley gets his taxi very quickly - I suggest Newcastle City Council and the fans get 100 million together, shove it in his pocket and tell him to get back down to the Smoke.
As regards messiahs - wait 'til Easter Day on that score :-)
