Booze ban for under-15s? It's your call

Richard Jackson | 06:58 UK time, Thursday, 29 January 2009

drinking.jpgIf you're under 15 - then you shouldn't be drinking.

Who says so? Well England's Chief Medical Officer.

Sir Liam Donaldson is issuing new guidance and thinks no-one of that age should be drinking, even at home.

Shelagh heard from Stephen Chittenden this morning, who's been speaking to some 14 and 15 year-olds about their experiences of alcohol; and she spoke to Professor Ian Gilmour, president of the Royal College of Physicians and chairman of the UK Alcohol Health Alliance.

The majority of parents recognise that supervised introduction to alcoholic drinks with some commentary on varying strengths is preferable to youthful, over confident experimentation.

Waiting until they are 15 years old is far too late. They've already hit a bottle of some sort at sleepovers, school trips and parties.

My unofficial guidance to parents would be to start with shandies and snowballs from around their 13th birthday with food and progress to the occasional half glass of wine with dinner.

Of course, the best medical advice would be to take alcohol off the market. But we live in a real and imperfect world. Parents need to be practical and exercise discretion and judgement.

Regarding the Sportsman moaning about a lack of funding.

There is a FREE OF CHARGE initiative to help businesses and individuals who wish to support sport, help offset the impact the credit crunch is having on this desire to support.

For many companies, faced with falling profits, job losses, low pay settlements for staff, reduced bonuses for staff and dividends for shareholders, also cutbacks on staff subsistence and client entertainment, it is hard to justify handing over large sums of money in forms of sponsorship.

The creation of a Sport Entitled Business Club, provides business with a platform to increase profile, brand awareness and provide all within their organisation with a direct tangible and financial benefit from their involvement.

By utilising the Invitation Book, (google it) each member of staff will access between £7,000s and £13,000 worth of money saving discounts.

You can also promote the opportunity for individuals to purchase and fundraise at the same time.

Time to be creative people, time to be creative.
