Are you worried about your job?

Nikki Brown Nikki Brown | 07:40 UK time, Wednesday, 21 January 2009

job searchNew jobs figures are out today and thousands are losing their jobs.

Unemployment is already at its highest level for more than a decade.

So if you're faced with redundancy -- what can you do? And what sort of protection do you have? We spoke this morning to Michael Ord who is an employment lawyer - listen to the interview below.

So have you lost your job? Nicky will be taking your calls on this from 9am this morning on 5 live.

If so, how did it happen? How has it affected your life? What hopes do you have?

I work in the relatively resilient food industry and I don't personally fear for my job. If anything, I feel like the current pressures have forced people in my workplace to up their game and it has been a more satisfying place to work as a result. The big issue for us (as importers of a sort) is the exchange rate versus the Euro - whilst our jobs may be safe, our bonuses are certainly not!

There is an interesting question of how we replace the (often but not always) high-paid jobs in financial services. It seems the UK needs to build up some of the other promising industries that allow us to bring in money from overseas to the benefit of jobs and (selfishly) to the benefit of Sterling! More discussion of that on http://thedailycrazy.wordpress.com

Worried about my health, my families and oddly my TV. It seems to have a problem. certain channels unavailable intermittantly. Were I really worried I would suggest I am being recommended to watch another channel. A specific other channel.

    10 balls! Apt. Oops.

10 balls to attend for aCommander In Chief and his fair lady. I wasn't invited but one of my families? Hmmm. I wondered.

    10 balls - round objects.

    "Sleep, Data, sleep".

No Nicola - it seems someone has passed a law against it for me and mine - allegedly?

I plan to behave as normal though. Sleep patterns are tricky - aren't they? Eh, Minister?

    Dear Nicky,
I worked as a sales executive at Mercedes Benz of Cheltenham & Gloucester. Although this is part of a dealer group, I was laid off as I did not hit targets. I would estimate there was probably 50 sales people within group doing the same job as myself. From the time I started at the dealership (12/03/2008) to the time I left, I ended up 6th in the performance league which makes a farce of being dismissed on poor performance. Many of the staff who has sold less than me (who were also further away from target than me) have kept their jobs.

After seeking advice from CAB, they said my circumstance isnt unusual as a lot of employers are laying off people who have worked there for less than 12 months who are outside the protection of employment law. This reduces bad publicity on redundancies. Looks like in these troubled times, moral standards and fairness from employers have dropped?

My partner is at risk of redundancy, having been told the day after his family has re-located to be with him. I pesonally gave up my job for the move and now the future is very uncertain.

What I want to know is how solicitors and the like deal with an economic downturn. It would appear to be a profession that is recession proof. How can it be justified that others will loose everything and the legal profession will gain during this period. Are they likely to have pay cuts and redundancies?

The caller on todays phone-in made my blood boil when she carped on about how her husband was only looking for a job that paid the wage "he was entitled to". With that type of arrogancve, no wonder he's out of work.

With ref to Blog #4 above, clearly the anti-lawyer brigade is alive and well, though the suggestion that lawyers are recession-proof seems particularly illogical. Take a look at the state if the property market, for a start.

Having worked in the law for 25 years, and being married to an extremely hard-working, caring and concerned Family lawyer, and therefore having a little insight into what actually goes on, these sort of comments do make my blood boil. I don't normally dignify them with any kind of response, but this comment seems just so irrational I felt I couldn't let it pass.

The answer to your blogger's question is a resounding "yes" - of course they are likely to have pay cuts and redundancies. Why wouldn't they?

Unemployment rate in UK rate up to 6%, a rise from 5.2% over the last year,

But in Germany it is 8.9%

in Spain, Greece, Italy etc. Unemployment rate is well over %11-14 !

Yes we are being hit hard by the effects of the current Global downturn and Credit Crunch and Job losses as a result of the downturn...

But It's a well known fact that a large factor in the stability of the market is confidence, and hearing stories of financial apocalypse in every other news non-story really isn't helping matters.

BBC and Radio 5 Live have been filling the airspace with 'negative vibes' for well over a year.

When will MEDIA take some responsibility ????????
