Mapping Antarctica

Andy Hall | 07:52 UK time, Tuesday, 28 October 2008

Professor Martin Siegart, a Glaciologist from Edinburgh University was on the show today telling us about plans to map the Antarctic landscape detail for the first time.

The antartic ice shelf

Researchers hope to examine the composition, density and texture of the underlying rock. At it's thickest part the ice is believed to be 4,776 metres thick, that's almost five kilometres!

If you missed it this morning then you can listen again to the interview below.

More information on the project is available at http://www.geos.ed.ac.uk/research/ellsworth/
