Saving small businesses

Andy Hall | 09:52 UK time, Monday, 20 October 2008

A report out this morning says that the UK is now in recession. The Ernst and Young Item Club says the UK economy has "deteriorated dramatically" in the last three months and things are going to keep getting worse until 2010.

Later today the Conservative party will be making an announcement on cutting national insurance rates for small companies.

Alan Duncan"Hope for the best, prepare for the worst"

Not my words but the words of Conservative Shadow Business Secretary Alan Duncan.

In a lively exchange on this morning's show Alan Duncan told Shelagh that there has been poor management of the economy in Britain and that banks need to take long term views rather than short term repossession.

We asked Alan Duncan what the thinking was behind this decision?

We got a huge response on text and email - some were supportive of Alan Duncan but many more were critical.

Shelagh also spoke to Yvette Cooper, Chief Secretary to the Treasury to hear if the government was responsible for the UK heading towards recession.

Well done Shelagh for keeping your cool. I thought that the Tory spokesman was the rudest and most arrogant speaker that I have ever heard on five live. It showed the Tories in their real colours. Never mind the charm offensive of appearing on panel shows. This is what we may get if people dont realise what is behind the PR and spin.

Well done Shelagh! I could barely believe what I was hearing on the radio this morning! Alan Duncan was clearly on the defensive and bordering on plain rude. I think this proves that if an interviewer tries to get underneath the issue the Tories flounder. They have their set piece that they want to say and woe betide anyone who tries to get more out of them!

Hmm - Either I'm in a minority or the BBC is censoring people who thought Shelagh was way out of her depth when interviewing Alan Duncan. I'm quite certain that you won't dare publish my comment. But here goes.
The BBC had better remember that they are one of the few organisations living in a bubble which is unaffected by the current financial crisis & recession because they are paid for by us the TV tax payers.
If you don't know what to say, best not to speak at all. Stick to what you're supposed to do which is just read the news and banter with your co-presenters.
The snide referral back to David Cameron's "man with a plan" was utterly unnecessary.
It was clear to me that Shelagh has not a single ounce of credibility in questioning anyone on the current economic problems because it is crystal clear that she does not understand what is going on. What is the point of asking anyone when the banks will recover? Even your own Robert Peston can't/won't answer such an idiotic question. You might as well ask Mystic Meg !
