The truth about teens?
Knife-carrying, binge-drinking, sexually reckless, poorly-educated, lazy wasters.
Judging by some of the recurring themes in the news, you could think that was a pretty accurate description of British youth.
But is there any truth in those stereotypes?
This week on Breakfast we've been hearing about the pressure teenagers are under through a seventeen year old from London, Malaika Hendrickson. Malaika is also an MC known as Lady Lykez.
Malaika's interviews
First Malaika spoke to her friend who is a teenage mum:
Next she talked to Sergeant Michael Kirk, head of a Safer Neighbourhood Team in Haringey Borough in North London:
Here she talks to former gang member, AJ:
Malaika meets with Ray Lewis, London's Depty Mayor for Young People:
Malaika's final interview is with Children's Minister, Beverly Hughes:
From gangland to the movies

Malaika has been talking to AJ Nakasila, who's 18. AJ was born in Congo, but moved to England when he was two years old. His family moved around East London living in hostels.
AJ ended up joining one of the biggest gangs in the area. He is now trying to turn his back on that life and has got into film making.
Here's one of his films. PLEASE NOTE: This video contains language which some viewers might find offensive.

I listened to Malaika this morning and either she or the young man she was speaking to referred to there being not many jobs. I don't know whether it has occurred to either of them or their parents that one of the reasons they might not be lucky in the job market is that they don't appear to be speaking english. Granted I did understand about 30% of what they were saying but not much more. My daughter at 6 had a richer vocabulary. Also the accent was bizarre is it affected?
Am I an old fogey? my 15 year old daughter goes to an inner city comp here Notting Hill Gate, London and she reports that there are an alarming number of young people who are seem to be actually proud of their ignorance.
Poverty of aspiration and no parental expectation are the real offenders.

CELIALAMB,I TOTALLY AGREE.my parents are both jamaican and my brother and sisters don't speak like that and neither do my 2 daughters.i did youth work and i was embarrassed to hear some of the kids speak.i'm all for having your own way of speaking when you are with your mates, but,i doubt if put in a working enviroment some of these kids could speak in a proper manner.

I listened to Malaika both with interest and with sheer dissapointment, interest in her own personal ambition which I hope she does pursue; but with absolute shock horrow of the way she spoke, and lack of vocabulary, although I did understand the message in her words.
I dispair to see so many young pregnant girls, who can not seem to wait before they have sex, and the young men are no better; it's a game with them to see how many girls they can breed and then take no responsibility, and when you ask them why they did not use a condom ? Oh I did not like the feel !!! total rubbish.
I came from Jamaica and lived in Moss Side as a youngster, I now have a lovely family, a son who has finished university, a daughter currently in university, and another son aiming to go to university. ( Broke now though ) It can be done.
Who should we blame ? blame the parents, pure and simple. You can not blame society for all our ills, you can not blame the shcools because our black children had the same opportunities. Please do not blame the Government, the blame falls at our own feet.
There has been many initiatives established and all have failed in my opinion, unless we as black parents sit, talk, read, participate, attend school funcions, assist with homework, Educate, Educate, Educate then heaven help us all with the next generation.
I wish Malaika well and hope that her life can at least be a becon for other youngsters both black and white.
Sorry for the rant, just wanted to get my point accross.

I think all of you comments have been incredibly unfair and judgemental. As people are with all kids nowadays. I'll be the first to say that yeah there are some genuinely bad people ou there but not all of them are kids, some but not all.
What i believe you have just done is heard from someone you would feel intimidated by on the streets and realised that she isn't as bad as you have been forced to believe by the media and as result have resorted to nit picking about the way she speaks.
I am 17 and absolutley sick to death of adults grouping us all into the same youth category. You all need to wake up and give the youth community a chance once in a while. What about all the kids working as volunteers in sports clubs. Those teenagers that are role models to you very own children. I myself earn money as a coach and also do loads of volunteering in this area. The young volunteers help run these clubs and events like the County Youth Games. Without those youngsters where would sport in Britain be.
Adults are on our back all year round no matter what we do. Even when the exam results come out you put us down saying that they are getting easier. Let the youth culture prove to you that they aren't all gangs and guns and that we are an important part of our functional society. The youth community has a culture that doesn't involve guns, gangs and violence when this girl has expressed the other side of it you have still put us down.
There will be knives and gangs in any community in this day and age. You are unfairly blaming the youth for this culture and forgetting what we are doing that is good for Britain.

I don't have a problem with the fact that Malaika does not speak standard BBC English, it's just that she seems to have an attitude problem. She seems quite arrogant and expects everyone to respect her and the rest of her generation by default, respect has to be earned, it is not a given. So many young people today have a chip on their shoulder and then wonder why they get a bad press.

Given that Malaika was afforded a spot each of this weeks programmes, I find it quite worrying that the "Breakfast" producers did not allow one text / email to be read out on air after her appearance today (Friday).
I imagine that many people had views and responded with their points but were denied the chance to be heard.
However, I do feel that the BBC should point out that Malaika does not represent or speak for the majority of teens in this country. The "average" teenager is a decent kid who does not get a voice...lets hear from them in clear, decipherable English.

I'm only 30 but I feel well out of it when I here kids like this. She's obviously a bright lass and you've gotta bear in mind peer pressure and the fact that she's got a new album coming out and I suppose coming on and talking with RP was never going to happen. If anyone knows what "nenaones" is (which she said every other sentence) please put me out of my misery. Man, asking for help in decifering "yoof speak" really makes me feel old!

People outside just don't understand the scene. Don`t rely on The Man.
America's doing it, with all their problems. Break out. Widen your `family`, get education. You have potential, there has to be better, more to life.
I carried a knife from 13 to 30 cos I was small and scared, never been in a situation where I would use it; violence happens too suddenly, too randomly. And I an`t no killer. Drugs is easy money, be a little god, but where you going? Do it at 40 and your pathetic. Life gone. Get a better life for yourself.
Those commenting, watch the video, listen to the tapes. Life ain`t the same for everyone.
