Should underperforming schools be closed?

Andy Hall | 11:01 UK time, Tuesday, 10 June 2008

School exams

This morning we heard that the government planned to close almost one in five secondary schools across England if they failed to improve their pupils grades. The government is targeting 638 schools, in which less than 30% of pupils achieve at least five good GCSEs including English and Maths.

The £400m standards drive, which will create up to 70 new academies was launched this morning by Schools Secretary Ed Balls, who spoke to Nicky this morning.
