5 LIVE BREAKFAST - NOW IN COLOUR!
I only realised I have Synesthesia when I saw a TV programme about it. The people in the programme had more extreme forms - one man had to live with a bombardment of random tastes, prompted by certain words, and there was a woman who saw letters in different colours. Black and white signs, information boards, newspapers, were all multicoloured through her eyes.
With me, it's numbers....when I see or hear a number I see it in a particular colour. So, 1 is beige, 2 is green, 8 is bottle green, 3 is brown, and 7 is a kind of mustard brown. 4 is yellow and 6 is a strong sugar pink. 5 is navy blue.
Once the number is in double figures or more then one number will stand out so 21 is green because the colour for 2 feels stronger than the colour for 1.
The best way to explain it is that the colour association is as significant as the numerical value of the number. It's as much part of my understanding of what 4 means as the number itself.
Lots of you have already been in touch with your amazing powers...
I have always seen days in colours. Monday - dark blue, Thursday - pink and Friday - of course dark green ! Lorraine
I see numbers as domino dots. Always have done - but only in black & white. Lucky Sheila to have such a colourful numerical life. Sue in bristol.
During the summer months I can taste most colours - but annoyingly I cant describe the flavours as they dont taste like anything else. But blues and yellows have strongest flavours. Helen.
A variation: I get subtitles in my head for everything I hear - words and sounds. I really struggle when people talk in long sentences as I can't understand what's being said, until my head can put the full stops in! Alison

Here's a good one for you. Apparently there is no consistency in the colours seen by people with Synesthesia, i.e. some see the colour red for number one, some see green.
BUT, how do you know that they are not actually seeing the SAME colour - but they have been taught to call it Red or Green, because that is what everyone else calls it. Unless you can look through someone elses brain, you will never know. What you and I call blue, may actually be pink.

I've always had a colour for the days of the week, although some are duplicated. I must admit I thought I was mad. I heard you talking about it this morning and was so excited to know I'm not the only one. I've been researching it all day and found it to be hereditary, so just rang my mum and asked her what she thought of when I said Monday to her - guess what - she said pink!!! Can't wait to listen to your Friday (white) programme.
