Tell us your FA Cup Final stories

You don't need me to tell you that the FA Cup final takes place on Saturday May 17th. Rachel Burden and I will be hosting Weekend Breakfast that weekend, and we'll be looking for your FA Cup final stories...Best final, your tale of a trip to Wembley/Cardiff...the most extraordinary length you went to in order to see your team in the showpiece event of the Football Calendar.
We want you to post your stories here on the blog.
Oh, in case you were wondering, mine involved my team Aston Villa in May 2000. It was the last ever Cup Final at the old Wembley and I went with my brother. We lost one nil to Chelsea and played very badly. We knew there were problems when Paul Merson didn't come out to warm up prior to kick off. Anyway, my brother and I were so fed up with it, that we left before the trophy presentation and we were drowning our sorrows in a Birmingham boozer by half six!! But like the Murphy's - We're not bitter!

I thought you may be interested in this photo taken before the days of high security.
I photographed the F A Cup when Blackpool won it in 1953 and Harry Johnstone, the Blackpool captain took it home and then displayed it on the counter of his newsagents shop in Central Drive, Blackpool.!
What a difference with today`s behaviour of fans!

I am a Sheffield United fan and my best cup final was the 1966 one where Sheffield Wednesday where leading against Everton by two or three goals in the second half and succeeded in throwing it all away. Well done Megson for helping with that!

Here's a little ditty,
'Bout a team called Cardiff City,
In winning the Cup,
They'll shut Pompey fans up,
From a Saints fan "oh what a pity!".

Flutuating fortunes in Manchester - Losing 8-1? Ah well, Nicky and Rachel - I never had much like. I mention poor Sven and look what happened. So I will not watching Vines in stetson - No wild west hero he at his own admission. I am not either - outnumbered I am afraid. Now I know where the word posse comes from.
Showing my age but the "posses" They used to ride with the sheriff didn't they?

1970 was when my pet hamster escaped from his home.
It was also the same night that Chelsea beat Leeds in the FA Cup Final replay at Old Trafford.
David Webb? Get in there!
Hammy's home was an empty fish tank.
It was placed on my book case.
Therefore, Hammy had to climb up 3 inches of sheer glass, and then drop on to the shelf below, before falling four feet on to the floor.
That is a great escape.

Shelagh and Nicky
I - or rather you - committed a cardinal sin last night? How about that?
Well if you are being honest - I may as well be. That fellow presenter with Nicky on "Watchdog" Ms Julia.
Well Shelagh, I have to admitted - there was a second there when I forgot about you.
When the word Finchley was mentioned. I will Sheikh myself out of such a lapse in future.
Honest!

In 1973 Sunderland were in the semi's against the Gunners. In the pub before the game I stopped a couple of idiot Sunderland fans from bothering a few Arsenal fans. We talked afterwards and wished each other good luck, (even though I hate Arsenal) When we got to the final I could not get a ticket via the vouchers from the Roker Roar programs and I was in despair of missing the final. Eventually I lined up outside of Roker Park all night for a ticket, which I got. I got home at 10.00am there was a phone call form the very same Arsenal fan that I helped in Sheffield, offering me a ticket for the Cup Final. I was very touched by his generosity, but declined and thanked him. If he sees this, thanks again. It was of course the greatest moment in the modern history of any Sunderland supporter. We had a wonderful day at Wembley. My mate lost his glasses when Ian Porterfield drove home the winning goal into the Leeds net. Sunderland partied for a week and we are still singing ?ey aye addio we won the cup?.

Sporting? I will support with difficulty Rangers this evening - absence of course. But find it odd why other supporters find it so difficult to support other British teams if their own choice of team is no longer a participant. That isn't sporting - sporting a grudge perhaps. I said with difficulty but it will be done.
I suppose being a cook helps!

Wondering what song was played in the section today (14thmay) around 8ish which had the commentary for all the goals Rangers had scored in the UEFA cup knockout stages leading up to the final against Zenit.
Would appreciate it if you could post the name of the song on the next entry :)
Thanks

The song we used this morning for the UEFA Cup montage was 'Always Where I Need To Be' by the Kooks.

I'm a Newcastle United fan so I have no favourite memories of my team winning the FA Cup sadly.
However, my favourite final was 1987, with the underdogs Coventry beating Tottenham in a great final in the old Wembley sunshine.
Keith Houchen's header to make it 2-2 was a classic goal, and the winner via Gary Mabbutt's knee spawned the title of a Coventry City fanzine!
That day was what the Cup Final is all about. Let's hope this year's final is as good.

1981 Cup Final replay - why does no one ever mention/show Steve Mackenzies goal when we have to endure (not that i'm a bitter blue) Ricky Villa's goal again and again and again.

My Cup Final memory is of the 1983 Cup Final Brighton -v- Man Utd. Having watched the 2-2 draw on TV and having consumed enough beer to make queuing overnight at Wembley a sensible proposition, that is what we did.
We were allowed to buy 4 tickets each and watched the then young Bryan Robson lift the trophy for the first time on Matt Busby's birthday.
As a United fan it was a very relaxed affair being 3-0 up at half time so there was a real party atmosphere.
It also made up for my tears in the 10 minute final of 1979 - why oh why didn't Lou Macari bring down Liam Brady??!!

25 years since Brighton was at Wembley - we didn't miss a Brighton Cup game that season - happy memories

My wife and I are both Sunderland fans. We planned our wedding for May 5, 1973. We never thought that we would be competing with the Cup Final. Let alone to be shouting for Sundeland. What a great day. We are still happily married and living in the USA, but never miss checking up on our team.
