The girl who survived....
It was a real privilege this morning, to interview Josie Russell - the girl who survived the horrific attack 9 years ago, in which her mother and sister were murdered. Like a lot of people, I remember the details emerging in all their horror, and the tiny glimmer of hope for her father, when against all the odds, Josie managed to withstand the multiple blows that killed Lin and Megan Russell. Long years of recovery followed, re-learning to speak, write, draw, trust - just live.
12 years on, Josie is a young woman with plans, charm, and a quiet understanding that people are still interested in the life of a girl whose face peered from our newspapers for weeks, even years, after the attack. I like to think people's interest has its roots in affection, sympathy and a fascination with the human spirit's capacity to recover from unspeakable things.
Just days after her 21st birthday, Josie sounds like a person who intends to make sure the life that was spared all those years ago leaves its mark.
