Our schools need you!

Andy Hall | 11:31 AM, Thursday, 31 January 2008

We heard on the programme this morning that the government wants to attract thousands of new teachers into the profession, with maths and physics teachers their main target. They started a new campaign today which will be all over your TV soon.

Watch, listen and read the new adverts from the TDA here.

So, did those adverts convince you? Or did they come across a bit more like this.

That's a spoof from the Armstrong and Miller show.

Shelagh spoke to two people who know a thing or two about the teaching profession. Frank Chalk (not his real name) who wrote the book 'It's your time you're wasting', which is described as a diary of a modern teacher's life, quit full time teaching after 14 years because he felt he was banging his head against a brick wall. And Ceri Evans who is one of the teachers who took part in this advertising campaign.

Listen back to the full interview with Frank and Ceri.

The new campaign is stressing that teaching is as much a 'profession' as any city job. So what's it like to be a teacher in 2008? 5 live's Stephen Chittenden got a privileged seat in the staff room at Orton Longueville Secondary School in Peterborough.

Listen to what happened in the staff room.

Shelagh spoke to Graham Holley, the Chief Executive for the Training and Development Agency for Schools (they're responsible for recruiting teachers into the profession).

Listen back to the full interview with Graham Holley.

Are you a teacher or thinking about training to become one? Would those adverts convince you to enter the profession? Leave your comments below.
