Monday 22nd January

Nicky Campbell | 05:13 UK time, Monday, 22 January 2007

In today's programme we'll be looking into how the Government will crackdown on anti-social behaviour, with the naming of forty Respect Areas across England. The local authorities, will be given extra cash in return for a commitment to fighting anti-social behaviour in the form of parenting classes and face to face meetings with police and politicians.
We'll talk about if the relatively slow rise of the 3,5 percent in council tax, and if it actually benefits us at all. Plus, we'll get the latest from a protest made against First Great Western by a group of train passengers who are unhappy with the service.
Also, as the situation in Iraq isn't getting better we'll discuss how the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR is coping with the two million Iraqi refugees wanting access the neighbouring countries for cover.

What gets you to work and gives you ability to carry on, kids. Love them, protect them they are all that matters.

    Hi
Woken up at 4.45 am by alarm and teasmaid as husband has to be up by 5.00am to milk our 180 dairy cows. Third and final day of the cowmans weekend off.We both hate early mornings!

Still, I got up at 6 am to do some routine housework and catch up on paperwork. I have a B&B bed/room to change and clean after my first guests of the new year, and replies to bookings for the coming season.

Later I will get the dog up and walk him round one of the most amazing places in England - Avebury Stone Circle, which we are fortunate enough to live in.

Although I will be busy all day doing very normal stuff (cooking, washing, ironing) I enjoy being able to organize my time as I wish and being part of a business that in volves both my husband and I. Extra income would be great, farming being what it is at present, but that could be true for many.

Every day is different and you never know what life holds for you - good or bad - so it's important to enjoy each and every one you can!!

Today was going to be an ordinary Monday. My second son Oscar (5) has a sore throat and a temperature. So he will be off school today. This is a shame becuse, until today he has a 100% attendance.

My wife will now be off work, which will affect the day of the special needs adult she teaches.

And the good news is 5 Live tell me its going to snow here in Sussex later. As a result my First son harry (9) will take a long time to walk back from school, as the snow will be just to exciting. This is after Cross Country club at lunchtime and African Drumming after school.

    And it's only 8:30am.

Oh well, another fascinating Monday. In three hours time I'll be at work dealing with a weekend's worth of people who have all lost their credit cards, ALL of whom think that they're the only ones who have been that careless, and that miraculously we can get them a new one in 48 hours....

But "the customer's always right", we're told. Maybe they're somebody else's customers.

The only way of keeping yourself sane is by wishing you were somewhere else. Strolling across the moors, flying to exotic locations....even some nice humdrum work in a bookshop or something would be preferable.

I could have been a writer - maybe I'll be one yet. Any offers considered!

Hope you have a better day than I'm likely to.

Oh well first time for everything - here goes!
Another Monday morning, driving to Grantham through a bit of rain. Going to work in a brand new public library (first in Lincolnshire for many many years). Love the job, hate the politics of local government.
40 this year, thinking about my planned week long celebration later in the year. Hope to go to Newcastle upon Tyne to celebrate with my partner his sister, her husband and my parents.
Worry about my brothers children(2 nephews and a niece) all primary school age - what does the future hold for them? More concerned about education and availability of illegal drugs than global warming!
Usual Monday morning thoughts - along with all on Five Live (as every day!)

Worked another night duty, caring like mad, and fancied the young doctor - who might easily have fancied me, I think.

"Confident mode" though. How my life might have been if that "confidence" had ever been for real. Which it isn't and never was.

I regret not being able to have so much more sex.

Drove home along the A30 in the rain, not falling asleep on account of eating cheese - though not smiling. Thinking mainly about whether I could be happily married, despite my family history of dysfunction, dysfunction, dysfunction. Asked my girlfriend yesterday whether she thought it a good idea. But do I?

Listened to the Five Live news, talking about the threat of teenage gangs on housing estates around England, and felt frightened for my little boy, aged nine and a half. How will it be for him in the next half dozen years? Would I be making it harder for him, getting hitched and having more kids before his mid-teens?There's so much I simply want to do with him, like take him to the Nou Camp and the San Siro! BE THERE for him.

Walked the dog in freezing cold rain, on finally having reached home. Down by the church we walked, my reminding myself how LUCKY I am as I scraped up another yellow pile. Fancy me having such a beautiful son and a wonderful girlfriend, while living in such a sweet Cornish village.

Fancying Cathy the doc is of no consequence at all.

Popped home for lunch - after a lifetime of working across the UK (motorways, hotels, drabness) it is a priceless treat to go home every day to eat, do the crossword and get away from the office. I can even (almost) put up with the only 25 year old still in nappies on his day off (or is it another sicky?) idly wasting this oh so precious life working out the next good reason for not paying his board, lodging or debts. Will he ever move out? Probably but he'll always be back. Bring on the immigrants! The several I know take nothing for granted, work their socks off and see the UK for what it really is - the ultimate gold mine for anyone prepared to sweat and dig. Oh well, by the time I get home he'll no doubt be "out" again. Better buy more shares in the brewery sector.

Went to the dentist today (in Cornwall, where I be from!). Forty minutes to drive there, because there are no NHS practices accepting patients nearer to where I live. So, there was the money on petrol and parking, the time off work, plus of course the £16.00 cost for the check-up, and all for TWO minutes! The "dentist" barely opened my mouth, glanced around, told me to book an appointment with the hygienist (who was not available today anyway) and then sent me packing.

It felt like I had driven an eighty minute round trip just to pay a guy to say "say ahh"! And of course I still don't have cleaner teeth - apparently dentists don't do that these days! I'm sure they used to?

    Anyway, just thought I'd share!

They say today is the most depressing day of the year. Could that be because the tax deadline is looming? Spent the afternoon grappling with figures and trying to find all the relevant bits of paper. Why do I always leave it to the last minute?

Took some time out to have a facial, though - very soothing and worth every penny.

Now it's time to think about supper for my daughter and me, and to remember to feed the dog his evening meal - I often forget.

I almost did forget this: the other way to cheer myself up is to start the process of booking a ski holiday. I've already been over New Year, but there is nothing quite like it for raising the spirits, and it's good for my health and fitness too, if only because of all the time spent in the gym beforehand to get fit.

I've found the whole Big Brother shambles deeply depressing, both for the racism and bullying behaviour and for what it says about so many people wanting to watch such a completely inane programme. I'm a Celebrity,,,,,, I can just about tolerate, but Big Brother - that's too much. I hasten to add that I've never watched it!

This morning I forced myself to eat 2 slices of toast, and left in good time considering I'd fallen back to sleep after the alarm. I got a bit sweary at the station ticket machine because I couldn't find change, but slowly found it amongst the screws, receipts, plastic cards and keys filling my pocket. I made the 8.07 train. The fresh copy of The Telegraph on an empty seat didn't excite me at first, but the Sports section made the journey go by in a flash. I read Andy Murray's Mum's column and thought how much she resembled my mate NJMcC's Mum. I've thought this before, but not as much as I've considered Cherie Blair's similarity to NJMcC's Mum. I don't know why the two of them don't look alike.

Old Street: Unreasonably long walk to the outside world, revolving doors, and then my work day went something like this: Checked emails, telephone calls, long corridor walks, checked through a colleague's complainy letter to a shop, cup of tea, talk about memory and comms feeds, watched Andy Murray snippets, asked colleague if he could find any arcade fire tickets and expressed my need to see them, lunch visit to scumerfield, 3 bean soup, watched Andy Murray snippets, packed up old desk, trolley trips from old office to new office, crawled over tables, watched Nadal clinch the game, ghosted machines, ran cables, left early.

I got to the doctor's 8 hours late-I thought I had a 17.00 appointment-It had been at 9.00. The doctor didnt see me.

Made a beautiful mushroom pizza after watching masterchef and decided I was going to write a blog, however dull...

The only sort-of-blogging I've done before was my contribution to a similar exercise (the History Matters “One day in history”) on 17 October 2006.

W, my partner (since 1968), has been back on the booze for the last fortnight. Essentially, this consists of drinking (mostly gin) followed by sleeping (for short or long periods, in bed or on the sofa), followed by more drinking, then more sleeping and so on. There are lucid or semi-lucid intervals (and no violence or anything like that), but I find myself in charge instead of running a joint enterprise, which I much prefer. I’m increasingly reminded of my mother’s decline into senile dementia – short-term memory loss, not making much distinction between night and day, not knowing what day it is, just sitting and not taking things in or reading anything, decline in personal hygiene, talking to oneself … It clearly isn’t dementia, but the similarities are a bit scary. It’s disrupting for me, but I try to carry on as normal until the fog eventually lifts. It’s not always easy (and it also means that I drink more than usual, to calm myself down).

Today, things started looking up. After a bad morning (no gin on the premises, and some vomiting while I was out at the gym), W seems to be ready to give it up again – one just has to wait till this moment arrives - and made an appointment to see the doctor tomorrow, hopefully to get some pills to cope with withdrawal symptoms. We had a light lunch, watched Murray v Nadal (terrific match!) on TV, listened to Holst's Planets and then Edward Seckerson interviewing Juan Diego Flórez (whom I saw in La Fille du Régiment at Covent Garden last week – great stuff) on R3. At 5, W, having drunk a fair bit of the gin that I bought at lunchtime, went to bed, asking to be awakened at 6. I did that and things have been OK since. Life could be back to normal quite soon.
