Darren Bent to West Ham for £18m

Matt Williams | 09:58 UK time, Wednesday, 31 January 2007

Comments

Alan Curbuishley has had no problem getting his hands on money from owner Eggert Magnusson during this transfer window - but the biscuit businessman might think twice about bidding 18 million pounds for a player who last moved for 2 and a half.

West ham need cover in defence before lashing that amount on a player up front. It's worth saying Charlton have told us they've not received any such offer. No chance

How does Labour avoid any more heat from the cash-for-honours inquiry? We discuss the political fallout of Lord Levy's re-arrest.

Overnight Corus, formerly British steel, was bought out by an Indian company. What does it mean for workers in the UK ?

Have you had your car stolen recently? You will probably have to pay the police to get it back.

Plus, we make the final prediction of the January transfer window and speak to the Watford chairman about who they might snap up to help keep them up.

Is Eton the best school in the world? And what makes a school great?
Headmaster Tony Little and Nicky Campbell

I spent Friday morning at Eton College. It's just down the road from Windsor, handy for the Kings and Princes who've been taught here. Not just them of course. More than a smattering of Prime Ministers, captains of industry and sporting greats (not me, I'm an Edinburgh man).

It's been around for nearly 600 years. Not a girl in sight though.

Shelagh wanted me to play the Eton Wall Game - to find out more click here

But I fancied the Field Game.

So, is there still a place for Eton and schools like it in the modern world? You can join the debate and take a look at the pictures!

After an historic decision by the Sinn Fein to back the police in Northern Ireland. New Assembly elections could be called by the end of the day. We'll cut through the politics and tell you what it means for people living in Northern Ireland.

There are calls to scrap prescription charges and make people pay for non-essential operations instead. Is this the best way to keep the NHS going? Or just a slippery slope to making us pay for our healthcare?

Also this morning.....Shilpa wins Celebrity Big Brother, but would she have won without all the scandal? Well Shilpa says she doesn't think Jade is a racist, we'll find out if people in Mumbai agree?

Ronaldo to RM.... (various papers)

Matt Williams | 10:04 UK time, Friday, 26 January 2007

Comments

After his antics against Wayne Rooney at the World Cup and then coming out publicly in support of a Real Madrid presidential candidate - it seemed guaranteed that Cristiano Ronaldo would be heading to Spain. But he stayed at Manchester United and became arguably the player of the season. ronaldo_cristiano_mufc_profile_2006.jpg

Now Real want to pay 50m euros for him - the 3rd highest ever transfer fee. United will be keen to hold onto him - their latest profits show they don't need the money - BUT Real have recently signed the biggest TV deal anywhere in the world and want Ronaldo to take over from David Beckham as the face of Real Madrid. Alot can happen between now and the summer and Ronaldo hardly showed his loyalties last summer but still I'm not convinced...

Mancini to Chelsea

Matt Williams | 09:42 UK time, Thursday, 25 January 2007

Comments

I reckon you'd probably get longer odds on Mourinho being the chelsea manager next season rather than the raft of candidates appearing regularly in the papers (Carlo Ancelotti, Didier Deschamps, Guus Hiddink, etc) The latest is the Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini - their most successful coach in ten years.

His contract runs out in the summer and is described as "Mourinho without the aggro". So, a decent contender but it just feels too early for there to be a stand-out candidate for a position most of us think will only become vacant in the summer. As much a chance as any of them...

Good morning. The main story on the programme today...

Another political voice wades into the Big Brother debate as Labour's chief whip, Jacqui Smith, says we should boycott the programme. Jade and Shilpa are up for eviction tonight- is it a British referendum on racism and bullying? We'll be looking at whether the Big Brother house mirrors the views of society.

Also this morning, the Health Secretary, Patricia Hewitt, has told the BBC that, in hindsight, a hundred thousand pounds a year for GPs is too much cash. And, after the gale chaos yesterday, the big clean up begins, but roads are still closed and train services are still disrupted.

And finally, in sport, we'll be previewing the big match between Liverpool and Chelsea this weekend, as well as giving you live updates throughout the programme on England's one-day match against Australia in Brisbane.

It seems to be pretty much accepted as fact now that Jose Mourinho will leave Chelsea before the start of next season. So who are Chelsea going to bring in?

The clever money is on Guus Hiddink who knows Roman Abramovich well but the Mirror reckon Andre Shevchenko is bending Roman's ear about going for his former manager at AC Milan - Carlo Ancelotti.

They won the scudetto and the Champions League together but you have to wonder about whether Shevchenko is likely to stay at the club after such a disastrous first season at Stamford Bridge. Unlikely.

Good morning. The top story on today's programme...

It's 300 years since England and Scotland tied the knot, but is it a happy anniversary? Most people are still happy with the United Kingdom, but a majority of people in England want to see an English parliament. What do you think?

Do you remember Rick Costello? Rick is terminally ill with cancer and contacted us because he couldn't afford his heating bills. Today he'll meet a government minister and ask to extend the winter fuel allowance to the terminally ill.

Helen Mirren is now also the Queen of Hollywood, as she takes two Golden Globes for her royal role. We are live in L.A after a good night for British film, and we'll ask what it means for the Oscars.

Raul to Liverpool

Matt Williams | 09:53 UK time, Monday, 15 January 2007

Comments

He is the topscorer for his country - topscorer in the Champions League but there's little doubt that Raul's best days are behind him. He's struggled to get into the Real Madrid side for the last couple of seasons and at 29, faces being sold off by the club this summer.

So where will he go? The Spanish press made the obvious conclusion over the weekend - followed up by the Mirror this morning - that because he's watched a few games at Anfield when his mate Fernando Morientes played there and because Rafael Benitez knows him well, he must be off to Liverpool. But with Kuyt, Crouch and Bellamy finally striking up an understanding at Anfield, I'm not so sure...

Since he left the England post, Sven Goran Eriksson has been linked with a number of clubs - both in the Premier League and in Europe - and the latest is Marseilles. Speaking to the OM striker Djibril Cisse on French TV he said "I am the next Marseille manager, do you intend to stay at my club?"

Sounds a pretty big hint.... until you consider that Eriksson is still being paid £6,500 a day by the FA as a result of that amazing deal he signed after Euro 2004 to stop him going to Chelsea. Why bother getting a job when you're being paid that amount anyway?

Freddie Ljungberg to west ham (Independent and The Sun)

One of our reporters this morning told me he'd been told West Ham are "chasing everything with an elephant gun" since the injection of cash from the consortium headed by Eggert Magnusson - which means at some point they are going to hit something. SWP at Chelsea or Freddie at Arsenal? Ljungberg has had limited appearances since the arrivals of Tomas Rosicky and Alexander Hleb - just ten games in the league - so his imminent departure shouldn't come as a shock - but would he go to a club threatened with relegation - particularly when the likes of juventus and AC Milan are interested (according to the Express)... Hands up who thinks Jose Mourinho jose.jpg
will still be Chelsea coach at the start of next season? Thought not... I can remember rumours of his imminent departure circulating since they went out to Barcelona last season - and he revealed last month that he almost left last season.

The story goes that he's unhappy with certain players being signed by the chairman and that he's getting frustrated at the amount of criticism thrown Chelsea's way. Inter Milan and Real Madrid seem the obvious destinations - with Guus Hiddink who knows Abramovich well on his way to Stamford Bridge.

Mascherano to Liverpool

Matt Williams | 09:39 UK time, Friday, 5 January 2007

Comments

When Javier Mascherano arrived at West Ham, he came off the back of an impressive showing for Argentina in the World Cup - but it's all gone pear-shaped since then. Every game he's played for West Ham they've lost and he's only had 6 minutes action since October. Liverpool are his preferred destination presumably because of the Spanish manager's known admiration for him and to play as cover for Gerrard and Alonso. But FIFA rules are pretty clear on this - he can't play for more than 2 sides in a season - he's already played for West Ham and Corinthians - so that would appear to be that. When so many papers think there's a chance, you wonder if this one will actually come off...
No it won't

Is this a vital medical leap or just Frankenstein-style science?

Rumour of the day - SWP

Matt Williams | 09:35 UK time, Thursday, 4 January 2007

Comments

SWP to West Ham (Sun)

This is the early front-runner for rumour becoming reality. The world and his wife knows that Shaun Wright-Phillips hasn't played anywhere near the number of games he was hoping for when he joined Chelsea - this season his situation hasn't changed much so he must be looking for a way out.

swp.jpg

West Ham would not only guarantee him games - they need the kind of service he'd deliver and crucially with Eggert Magnusson bringing his sizeable wallet to the table, they've got the money to fight off other challengers. The only drawback here is the injury to Joe Cole - but Mourinho doesn't seem to be using that many wingers this season anyway.
