.Auld enemies

Australia versus England for The Ashes is surely among the greatest of rivalries.

gorbachev_reaganx152.jpg

But is it the greatest?

It's New World versus Old, with shades of Empire etc spicing it up. But what other great rivalries are there, not just in sport, but in the wider world, either now or in recent history.

We want to feature a few on Five Live Breakfast, but need to know which to look at.

USA v Russia during the cold war and the space race?

Coe v Ovett?

Blur v Oasis?

England/Scotland and Celtic/Rangers, obviously.

Which are the world's greatest rivalries and which would you like to hear more about?

Crowe-ing

Russell Crowe was born in New Zealand. In Wellington on the North Island to be precise. His roots include, apparently, Maori, Norwegian, Scottish and Welsh ancestry. That hasn't stopped him pledging his allegiance to the Australian cricket team.

That a Kiwi could side with the Aussies infuriated many of our texters - and thousands more went to the website to hear his views in detail - click here to hear it .

So is is right for someone born in one country to support those from another? Players often turn out for countries they were not born in - but can you choose your allegiance or should it be simply a matter of where you are born.

Please beg my indulgence, but Breakfast on Five Live has never received a text message like this before "To the Breakfast Editor: Good programme idea. "

Steve, wherever you are, thank-you.

Of course, it wasn't really my idea, but heh, you've got to take the plaudits wherever you can find them. It's also very gratifying when a plan - developed by the programme team - makes a big impression on air.

Our broadcast from the home of Khalid Anis and his wife Sara certainly generated a big response. Nicky Campbell spent the whole of the programme with them, and various other guests. The idea came about when Khalid emailed us to complain about the fact he only seemed to hear "radical" Muslim voices on air. "Where are the moderates like me?" he moaned.

Got a question about Islam?

Daniel Robinson | 17:40 UK time, Sunday, 19 November 2006

Comments

Is there a question you've always wanted to ask about Islam, but never been sure how to ask it? Why do Muslim women wear a headscarf or veil? Why do Muslims pray five times a day? Who speaks for Muslims in this country? On Monday morning, we want to hear all of YOUR questions - and we'll try to answer them.

khalid.jpg

To coincide with the start of Islam Awareness Week, Breakfast came live from the family home of Five Live listener Khalid Anis. In response to an interview we did with Islamist extremist Anjem Choudary back in September, Khalid sent us this email:

"As a Muslim, Anjem Choudary makes me feel sick. From the community I revolve in no-one shares his views. He fails to understand a simple tenant of Sharia law, that it can only be implemented in a Muslim country.

If Mr Choudary is feeling so aggrieved here, I wish that he and others like him would leave and take their mad ideas some where else. They have no place in My Britain. Please do not have him on again, the media give people like him the oxygen of publicity." Khalid

Khalid invited us to his house, to experience what life is like for British Muslims and to give the other side of the argument to people like Anjem Choudary.

Oi, ref!

Who'd be a ref? Sworn at, abused and treated with a total lack of respect. And often that's just from the linesmen, according to some of the text messages we've received. Like this I was playing in a Sunday pub league match in Torquay when the linesman was sent off for swearing at the ref.

We'd heard a lot about people's views on refs since Graham Poll's recent high profile waving of the red card .

So who is the best ref? Are you a ref? What's it like for you being the man in the middle - whether it's in a school match, junior leagues or even professional level?

Are we too tough on referees? Is it the players who should learn to behave properly?
What are your tales of chaos in the middle?

And which sport has the best referees? And in which sport do the player's behave best?

And can you think of a better title? It's called No 5, 1948 at the moment.

...in unlikely circumstances?

tube.jpg
We've heard about the Coventry players forced to take a tube train to their match at QPR because of problems with the team coach.

They had to run the gauntlet of other fans on their way to matches in London - and also had manager Mickey Adams
telling them they each owed him for the fare.

It wasn't long ago we were hearing about the Moscow football team that had to travel by tube to get to the ground because of traffic congestion - raising eyebrows amongst the Muscovite commuters. moscow.jpg

Which prompted the question - who have you spotted on public transport - or indeed anywhere unilkely? Footballers, other sportsmen and women, celebrities, politicians, BBC presenters.

Sightings of Nicky Campbell particularly welcome.
