Tantrums, towels and tea

Matt Williams | 11:27 AM, Tuesday, 17 October 2006

People across the world are being asked to keep a diary of what they did today - so here's my stab. For details of the bigger project look here .

There is no good way of looking at life when your alarm goes off at 4 in the morning. Well, actually there is one... At least there's no traffic and I can get through London in less than 20 minutes. Got in this morning and found there weren't enough newspapers to review - threw a strop at my producer who sent me off to get tea. I NEVER get coffee as the last time I did, I ended up gabbling like a turkey. Still no papers - so I'm in a foul mood. Producer is now wearing headphones and pretending he can't hear me. Papers arrive but they're pretty poor - so feel a bit better. Then we get a great Paul Collingwood interview and Colin Montgomerie comes on the programme. Much better now. V busy bulletin at 0830 - so the shift ends well. All set for the gym - but I've forgotten my towel... So I'm having a bacon and sausage buttie to compensate. My brother's staying so an all-day footie tournament on the PS2 beckons....

Hee hee...I like the idea of all the angst and strife going on behind the scenes whilst the viewers listen away oblivious. Very Drop the Dead Donkey.

Today started really well tuned into Shelagh & Nicky’s program, they sounded on particularly good form today.
I am still in bed and my dear wife delivers a coffee to my bedside life truly doesn’t get much better, by 7.30am I am up and about ready for anything the day has in store.

Driving into work a lorry jack knifes delaying me for some time but as I have Five Live for company I still feel in good spirits, a good bit on faith schools Nicky asks a Muslim lady if it would be possible for a Jewish person to be included if a quota system be implemented?
    Well that made me smile.

My listening pleasure is rudely broken by my tiresome mobile phone, one of my employees informs me that there has been an attempted brake in at the offices he informs me that there is broken glass and blood every ware but nothing stolen.
I refuse to let this upset me as I have been a victim of crime on numerous occasions and this time I contemplate the possibility that the perpetrator is lying in a pool of blood nursing a severed artery.

On my arrival at the office I am faced with the usual mayhem of customers requesting a quality of service beyond anything they are prepared to pay for staff who fancied a duvet day etc, so it goes!

My wife rings to remind me that I have a doctor’s appointment this evening and I should try to have a stress free day, I reply that I will try my best.

Still I have Five Drive and a rather good Havana Cigar to look forward to on the way home, the day just gets better and better.

BBC Five Live aand BBC Five Live Breakfast are excellent. I do have one suggestion, some coverage of North Korea. Here are some articles I wrote in my blog.

The top text on this thread directs you to the site History Matters to record your “One Day In History” – which was last Tuesday, 17 October 2006.

So since last Wednesday I have been attempting to do this for posterity and I am still unsure whether I have succeeded. I have tried to search for my attempts several times but as their search engine appears not to work with the keywords asked for (record my One Day In History for posterior more like) I still do not know if I am on it: several times, once or not at all. I suspect the latter. I have also tried to record “My Thoughts on Why History Matters to me?” as that site also offers and the same result. One time I got a automated Email telling me I had been successful with posting my mother’s pictures as a child etc and encouraged me to go look. I did immediately with joyous cries of acclamation and actually saw a thumbnail of one of Molly’s picture. I clicked on it tremulously and – and GOT NOTHING!.

I complained to the site and one answer suggested, even though I am a 50 year something and had recorded all my information accurately – I should try ticking the “I am under 18" box and fraudulently claim my proud parents were sitting beside me watching my posting of history. WHAT? I saw famous names there like David Cameron, Steven Fry- oh and someone called Vicky Pollard – well it is a real name I suppose. So all these people it is suggested lied in order to get their contributions on?. Well I tried it and still no joy – I do not think. Tomorrow will be 7 days of trying – very trying.

Oh one reason “Why history matters to me” which I wouldn’t have posted was highlighted by Five Live. So I blame you people for initially interesting me in this and sending me towards them for all this futile activity.. This is the era where you HAVE to find someone else to blame isn’t it?

I was listening to Simon Mayo interviewing Ray Winston I think when suddenly realised the guest had changed to some one feminine. Just as I learnt it was Bethany Hughes, historian – apropos nothing I had heard she asked Simon to look at her top garment and tell her if he could see her breasts? Boy if I hadn’t been sitting down already....! Anyway, Mr Mayo being the gallant gentleman he is demurred from undertaking the good Doctor's request for an examination. Me – I was off and running to get my stamp collectors magnifying glass (two bands of light helps with viewing thru it). I closely inspected my radio but am sad to report I couldn’t see Ms Hughes top half. Sigh!

Yes I can say in 3 words one of the reasons history matters to me. “Doctor Bethany Hughes”. With the David Strakey’s, Suimon Sharma’s and Peter Ackroyd’s shoving themselves into camera shot on every occasion they can – mostly when history programmes are on (which my missus loves)I find something more urgent to do. Like watching paint dry in another room, which hasn't been re-decorated in a decade. But then I saw one of Doctor Hughes' historical programmes and was hooked. What a shallow person I am! I usually yell at the men presenters draping themselves all over my view of the pyramids, whatever. But ask me what subject each Bethany Hughes’ programme was on, be it an hour or even two hours long and I would no doubt only mutter incoherently “Bethany! Bethany!” I am a disrespectful viewer with Peter Ackroyd – his shows on The Romantics and London were wonderful but his constant presence on the screen looking moodily off into the middle distance irritated the heck out of me. But I consider it a frame of film wasted if Dr Hughes isn’t in it. Her head, just so, the sun glinting of that raven black hair. I go weak. Hey, can someone move those damn pyramids out of the way? Ready for your close up, Dr Hughes!

Thanks to the BBC for breaking the story about the Republican Candidate who threatened to deport Hispanics if they voted. I heard that story on BBC Five Live Up All Night. I am also writing on the US Elections. Feel free to visit my blog.
