Camel racing kicking up a storm in Dubai

Daniel Robinson | 18:48 UK time, Sunday, 15 October 2006

On Monday morning's programme we'll hear the first response from Dubai's ruling Maktoum family to allegations that they enslaved thousands of young children to use as jockeys in camel races. The charges were filed by 6 families in America who claim their children were abducted and and abused.

It's claimed that the children - some of them as young as two - were kept in poor conditions, starved (so as to keep their weight down), abused and forced to take part in a dangerous sport. The Maktoum family have described the lawsuit as "baseless" and point to the fact that children are no longer used in the races. In fact, the camels are now ridden by tiny remote control robots.
