Your blog tips
We got a fantastic response to our request for blogs we could link to on International Blog Day.
Tim in London suggested http://frankchalk.blogspot.com/ and http://coppersblog.blogspot.com/.
Another texter (a Nottingham Forest fan) wanted to draw our attention to trentendtalk, while Matthew Syler from Manchester wanted us to know about two sites which address issues over concerns about the way HIV and sexual health in North West England are dealt with http://www.bodypositivenw.blogspot.com and http://www.georgehousetrust.blogspot.com .
http://www.mountain7.co.uk/m_blog/index.php is described as a place for people to go when they've got nothing better to do...
Pete Morgan is a Norwich fan and points us towards http://new.pinkun.com/default.aspx
Happy International Blog Day!
It's International Blog day on 31st August - we found the details here.
So on the Breakfast programme on Thursday morning we'll be asking people to suggest the best blogs they've found so we can link to them. We'll post these later in the morning.
The idea is for each blog to link to five others - the more unusual and interesting the better. Obviously we want people to link to ours too.
Please let us know if you come across us on International Blog Day!
Where were you?
September 11, 2001. Most people will remember where they were when they first heard about the attacks on America.
Maybe you were listening to the radio? Perhaps you saw the live pictures on the television as fires raged in the Twin Towers after the attack on New York? Wherever you were, whatever you were doing, we'd like to hear from you.
On Five LIve Breakfast we are planning a special programme for the morning on September 11, 2006. Five years on we are keen to hear people's stories about that day - about how you heard the news, how you reacted and what you think about those events now.
It could be that you knew people working in New York, Washington or Philadelphia that day. Perhaps you were visiting the United States - or perhaps you live in America and want to tell us your story?
We'll be featuring some of your stories on the programme on September 11 - you can leave a comment here or email us at breakfast@bbc.co.uk
More swearing
Another bit of swearing hit the airwaves this morning. It came as we were talking to an Israeli soldier about a protest against his country's leadership over the handling of recent conflict.
"I'm sorry for the word, but they f***ed up and they have to pay the price," said the soldier.
Nicky apologised - and immediately people contacted us to say that was unnecessary.
"The use of the F word was in my view completely in context," said one listener, Keith.
The broadcasting industry watchdog Ofcom however says caution must be taken over swearing, particularly at Breakfast time.
Indeed Radio 1 has threatened to fine presenters if they are caught swearing on air.
So is a soldier swearing something we should say sorry for?

The price of failure
We're trying to set up an item for tomorrow (Wednesday's) programme about students unknowingly signing contracts that may waive their rights to take action if their university courses aren't up to scratch. If you know anything about such contracts - please let us know.
Also tomorrow we'll be telling listeners how cows "moo" with regional accents. Sound incredible? Well, listen in between 6 and 9 tomorrow morning for some incredible sounds.
And we'll look back on Liverpool's Champions League qualifier in Kiev.
Rock on
Another blank Monday for Luke . So how about a Tuesday winner? His tip today is Red Rocks in the 14.50 at York.

Breakfast on the Edge

Tonight Shelagh will be sleeping in a B&B 15 metres from a cliff edge. We don't think she's in any danger, unless she's prone to sleep walking. While she's there she's going to be finding out more about the issue of coastal erosion.
On Tuesday morning Shelagh will present the programme from the village of Happisburgh in Norfolk which is slowly but surely falling into the sea, the cliffs being worn away by tides and storms. In some places around the UK money is being spent on sea defences, but not here. Clearly where this money is spent is a cause of some controversy.
Professional photographer Richard Drury has been fascinated with what coastal erosion has done to Happisburgh. Thanks to him for these photos. More can be seen here.
Rumour of the day - Reyes Real move off?
Several of this morning's papers report that Jose Antonio Reyes' move to Real Madrid could be off. Real's president, Roman Calderon, has said that signing Arsenal's wantaway winger is no longer a top priority. The Spanish club have already had an offer of £10million turned down and the offer is not going to be improved.

It is thought that Real Madrid are instead turning their attention to Lyon midfielder Mahamadou Diarra.
It will be interesting to see the reception both Reyes and Ashley Cole get if they play against Aston Villa tomorrow. Both have publicly stated they would like a move away from the London club.
Our sport's reporter Matt Williams believes that Reyes' move to Real Madrid is still likely.
Rumour of the day - Liverpool in for Kuyt
Only a few days left until the transfer window closes and Liverpool look the most likely to bolster their squad before the 31st August deadline. The Sun and The Mirror claim that Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt is poised to join Liverpool for £10million and could feature in their opening game of the season against Sheffield United.
Benitez has reportedly offered defender Jan Kromkamp, valued at £2million, to help broker the deal for Kuyt who has taken Ruud Van Nistelrooy's place in the Dutch team.
Our sports reporter Matt Williams thinks this transfer is imminent.
Let us know what you think about this transfer.
Is it what?
Our racing reporter, Luke Harvey, says he's suffering from "second-itis" at the moment.
But don't be put off following his tips!
Today (Wednesday) he's gone for Whatizzit in the 8.05pm race at Sandown.

Luke-ing good?
His tip came second yesterday, so our racing reporter, Luke Harvey, is hoping to go one better today (Tuesday).
He goes for Transvestite in the 4.00 at Brighton.

Rumour of the day - How old is Martins?
Newcastle are still trying to secure the services of a top striker before the transfer window closes on August 31st and it is possible that they may get one of their targets, Inter Milan's Obafemi Martins, cheaper than the Italian's £10million valuation.

Reports in Nigeria suggest that Martins may be six years older than his official age of 21. The possible error emerged after Newcastle defender Celestine Babayaro claimed to have played alongside Martins in the Nigerian youth set-up - Babayaro turns 28 in two weeks.
Is there any truth to this rumour? Our sports reporter, Matt Williams, believes it is likely.

Luke's tip....
...Friday's tip from our racing reporter, Luke Harvey, is Soviet Sceptre, which runs in the 5.00 at Sedgefield.

Rumour of the day - Hargreaves to Manchester United?
Last Thursday we interviewed Owen Hargreaves on Breakfast and he spoke about his desire to play in the Premier League one day. Now it seems this could come to fruition sooner than thought as the Daily Mail and the Mirror report that Sir Alex Ferguson has renewed his interest in the midfielder he has tried to sign twice already.

It is believed that Bayern Munich will allow Hargreaves to leave if the asking price of £8million is met. Is this an expensive replacement for the injured Michael Carrick or do United need two holding Midfielders?
Our sports reporter, Matt Williams, thinks this move is likely.
Rip it up and start again
This morning's programme was an example of when the previous 24 hours' work, leading up to 6am, is ripped up and thrown out of the window.
Just before we went on air, we learned about a security operation which, we're now told, prevented "mass murder on an unimaginable scale". For all the details click here
Our planned programme was junked and we were quickly into rolling news mode. There were two key elements to the story; the operation by the police and MI5 to arrest people thought to be planning attacks on aircraft and the chaos caused to air travellers throughout the UK by heightened security.
Reporters like Anna Lee on Teesside, Ross Hawkins in London and James Shaw in Glasgow were woken by dawn phone calls scrambling them to get to their nearest airport. Others like Stephen Chittenden rang in - he was scheduled for a relaxing day off - instead he dashed off to Stansted Airport to see what was happening there.
Rumour of the day - Benitez in for Flying Dutchman?
The Dutchman in question here is not Ruud Van Nistelrooy but Feyenoord striker Dirk Kuyt (apologies for the headline pun). The Independent reports that the Liverpool Manager is planning to table a second bid for Kuyt as an initial offer of £10 million was turned down earlier in the summer.

Liverpool have already off-loaded Djibril Cisse and Fernando Morientes, so Kuyt would have to see off competition from Craig Bellamy, Peter Crouch and Robbie Fowler for a place in Liverpool's starting eleven.
However, to afford and be able to lure the goalscorer Benitez must first ensure that Liverpool are playing Champions League football this season - they play Maccabi Haifa in final qualifying round 1st leg this evening.
Kuyt has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, who sold Van Nistelrooy, and Newcastle, who are without the injured Michael Owen and retired Alan Shearer.
Words of wisdom? Luke who's talking!
Our racing reporter, Luke Harvey, doesn't give up easily - and although he hasn't had a winner for a while, there's no keeping him down.
His tip for today is Pillars of Wisdom in the 4.10 at Brighton.
To keep up to date with results, click here.
Rumour of the day - Reyes to Madrid?
Pictures in The Sun newspaper today show Arsenal's Jose Antonio Reyes posing in a Real Madrid shirt increasing speculation that he wants a move to the Spanish club. The pictures were taken last season when Arsenal faced Madrid in the Champions League.

Last year Reyes fell victim to a prank on Spanish Radio when he announced his aspirations to play for Madrid. The 22 year-old Spaniard believed he was talking to Real's sporting director Emilio Butragueno when he allegedly berated his team-mates:
"If I'm not (playing for Real) I'm going to have to carry on playing with some bad people".
Any move could be scuppered if Reyes plays against Dinamo Zagreb in Arsenal's Champions League Qualifying game this evening as this would leave him cup-tied and unable to play European football for any other club this season.
Our sports reporter, Matt Williams, believes the chances of this transfer going through are 50/50.
Crown by a head?
He's on a bad run, but could this be the tip to put Luke Harvey back on track?
His tip today runs in the 4.15 at Bath . So if you have pennies to spare, Luke reckons it might be worth investing them on Rahy's Crown.

The blogs of war
We're interested in doing an item on the Breakfast programme about how the hostilities in the Middle East are being reported on various blogs and websites.
We've already come across a few but would be keen to hear of any you may have discovered that are worth us taking a look at.
For more information about the dispute you can click on this special site.
Cole out in the cold?
The Rumour of the Day for Monday was all about Ashley Cole. Both The Sun and Daily Mail report that he's been left out of Arsenal's squad for Tuesday night's Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb.
![]()
It's reported that Cole's move to Chelsea is inching closer.
So is Cole DEFINITELY on his way to Stamford Bridge? Five Live Breakfast's sports reporter, Matt Williams, rated the rumour as 9/10!
On the Button
On Breakfast we've been closely following the progress of Jenson Button. For the last two seasons, Jenson has been recording his thoughts for us each race weekend during the Formula 1 season.

And for the most part it's been a tale of disappointment and frustration as Jenson has tried in vain to get his first Grand Prix victory. So it's fair to say there was a lack of complete impartiality on our part when news came through that he had won the Hungarian Grand Prix.
To hear the latest edition of his diary, check out the Five Live Formula One podcast The Chequered Flag
Winning start to the week?
Luke Harvey reckons the horse to be on today is Deo Gratias in the 4.10 at Newton Abbot
Rumour of the day - Ronaldo to Valencia?
The Daily Star reports this morning that Spanish club Valencia have made a £12 million bid for Manchester United's Christiano Ronaldo.

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed all along that his 21-year-old star is not for sale but that has not stopped Valencia bidding for "The Winker" as he has recently been dubbed. Ronaldo is alleged to have contributed to Wayne Rooney's sending off in England's World Cup Quarter Final and is expected to be on the receiving end of fan's taunts and jeers this season as a result.
Valencia have already signed Chelsea's Asier Del Horno and Liverpool's Fernando Morientes.
Fishy tip
Fancy your luck? Luke Harvey reckons the one to follow today is Fish Called Johnny in the 6.05 at Nottingham

Luke's tip
We're going to start posting Luke Harvey's tips - which he tells us at 6.55 each morning. We'll post them as soon as possible.
For the record, this morning he went for Humungous in the 3.50 at Goodwood.
It came fifth. Better luck tomorrow (we could be saying that quite often).

Owen Hargreaves to the Premiership?
This morning on Breakfast we spoke to England midfielder Owen Hargreaves who did a very un-english thing last night and scored in a penalty shootout to send his club Bayern Munich through to the final of the German League Cup.
He told us that whilst he is happy at Bayern - a club he has played for since he was 16 years old - he would relish a move to one of the top clubs in the Premier League:
"I'm still only young and I have been fortunate to have had a lot of great experience at a great club, one of the best in Europe, but getting the opportunity to play at one of the top teams in the Premiership would be great for me."
And with Steve McClaren officially taking up his role as England manager earlier this week Owen said that whilst every manager does things differently he expects McClaren's regime to be "very similar" to that of Sven's.
To listen to the full interview go to the BBC Sport Website
Who is listening?
Sadly we don't know all their names, but we do have an idea of how many. The latest listening figures for all of radio are just out. It may surprise you to know we only get told once every three months what our audience figures are (TV by comparison get statistics the next morning).
The figures are provided by an organisation called Rajar . The latest figures puts the Breakfast audience at 2.26 million.
Rumour of the day - Woodgate return to the Toon?
Reports in this morning's Daily Express suggest that Jonathan Woodgate could make a return to Newcastle along with Real Madrid team-mate Thomas Gravesen.
The two clubs have a good trading relationship and whilst it is believed that Gravesen is Newcastle's top priority they are also keen to lure Woodgate back after his £13.4 million move to Spain was hampered by injury. Gravesen recently turned down a move to Celtic.
Rumour of the day - Gallas no show?
Reports in the Daily Star this morning suggest that Chelsea defender William Gallas has failed to turn up for pre-season training in America.

Gallas has one year left on his contract at Chelsea and despite being offered a new five-year deal there is still talk of the World Cup finalist wanting a move abroad. Chelsea told Mike Sewell, our reporter in Los Angeles, that the club would issue a statement regarding Gallas later in the day. .
