When Five Live Breakfast covers a global event, often abroad, people assume the presenter who's left behind in the studio drew the short straw. Not so. Nicky being in Germany is ripe with benefits for the rest of us. While I miss his reassuring presence and the need to tell him he has a bit of muesli on his face (oddly at around 5.35am every day) I wouldn't have missed the birth of Britain's freshest Double Act since Ant and Dec! Not for all the tea in China ( and if we go there, it's my turn!!!!!)

If the deluge of texts are anything to go by, Matt and Nicky's " Letters From Deutschland" have been a big hit with you too. It's been like meeting a colleague at a leaving do, and seeing a whole new side to them. One or two texts have said "Oh grow up, will you!". No way! What's it all about if not the wonder and the passion we all felt as kids when a massive event - sporting or otherwise - burst into ordinary life. So, as you get ready for work in the morning, tune in, turn up, and Enjoy!!!!

Techno troubles

Technology - don't you just love it. Our little bit of kit that lists all the text messages we get to the programme (85058) crashed this morning, which meant we couldn't get the usual instant feeback on the programme.

We've come to rely on it heavily during the programme - largely because the texters are generally better informed and wittier than most of us who are trying to put the programme together. We really feel lost without those texts.
Fortunately the system eventually kicked itself back into gear - just in time for a flood ot texts about songs for a musical of Lord of the Rings (it's bombed in Canada apparently).

Also we've had loads of texts over the last few days which just say "NA". Anyone know what that's all about?

Welcome to the Breakfast blog...

What's Nicky Campbell really like? What's Shelagh Fogarty's mood first thing in the morning? Does Luke Harvey ever get a racing tip right? Three of the questions that might be answered via this new Breakfast blog. In fact let's try to answer them now - well, at least the third one. Answer - not very often.

My name is Richard Jackson and I am the editor of the programme. That means that, in theory at least, I am in charge of what goes out on the radio on Five Live every weekday morning between 6 and 9.

The aim of this blog is to explain a bit more about how the programme works and why certain decisions are made. Hopefully it can also become a forum for debate about the sort of stories we cover and the way we do them.
