A warm welcome to You Are The Ref on the BBC.

Over the course of Euro 2008 we will be asking for suggestions for scenarios that we can pose for You Are The Ref.

Previous sketches that the comic strip has dealt with are a player carrying the ball in his turban, the referee needing to use the toilet and a dog saving a penalty kick.

Now is your chance to suggest a footballing situation you would like to see answered, by adding a comment below.

We will not be able to use all submissions, but BBC Sport staff will choose a selection and send them to You Are The Ref creator Paul Trevillion for him to bring to life, with the help of referees chief Keith Hackett.

The deadline for suggestions for the first week of You Are The Ref is Sunday, 1 June and next week we will bring you the first posers for you to solve.

And, taking this opportunity to ask YATR:

A susbstitute is about to come on. The fourth official deems that their studs are not 'regulation' and can not be allowed on to the field of play. what happens if - though highly unlikely - no alternative boots or studs are available?

(Let's assume the player is of Kanu proportions and can not therefore take the boots of the player he is replacing.)

A goalkeeper gets a yellow card in normal time of a cup match for time wasting, and eventually the match goes to a penalty shootout, then when the score is at 6-6, and it is sudden death, the same goalkeeper picks up another yellow card thereby being sent off, before the next pen is about to be taken what happens then?

Does the team who are having to face the team who have had the goalkeeper sent off get to score in an open net??

Is Rio's action allowed, seeing that in normal circumstances he would've merely passed the ball back to his goalie who would not then have been able to handle it.

I've researched this really well, and thought it through for far too long....

(Lets assume that one of the players of the less-talented team kept the ball until his nine team mates ran to join their goalkeeper, then whacked it off the pitch to give himself time to join his team mates).

Incidentally, the goal is 2.4m high, with the average player at around 1.9m, and if i can jump 35cm from a standing still position, footballers can. The remaining 15cm is not important because the ball's diameter is a lot more than 15cm, which is the maximum size of the gap between head and bar(assuming that the players time their jumps properly). Also, the goal is 7.3m wide. That means that if each player is 30cm wide, and they line up with equal space between each pair of players (or player and post), there should be a gap of 33 cm between each player. The football's diameter is a little over 20 cm, so the player will have to move just 12cm to block the ball....

    BUT is this allowed?

He then starts jogging forward dribbling the ball, but the team move with him, thus restricting the opposition players to get to the ball to make a tackle. The team progress slowly up the pitch until they are within 10 yards of the goal and suddenly they all flee.
(each player runs and marks an opposition player, restricting them from the ball) then in a flash the centre midfielder slots the ball into a corner away from the keeper, he starts to celebrate wildly.

Is this fair play? and does the referee have a right to stop the team from doing this?

    second situation...

Arsene Wenger buys Samir Nasri (and keeps Alex Hleb), this results in Arsenal now playing Wengerball at its extreme, with Fab, Hleb, Nasri, Van Persie and Walcott knocking the ball to each others feet so fast that the opposition team has no way of getting it, after 45 minutes of them doing this the opposition finally show a weakness and the ball is immediately threading through to Adebayor who slots it past the keeper.

1-0 Arsenal... then it is half time; the second half resumes and Arsenal play like this until the second goal occurs. Then they just pass the ball around until the game ends.

The same situation occurs in every game of the 08/09 season and Arsenal manage to win the league... Wil they be told to stop playing the way they do or can they keep playing like this forever, winning every game because of fatigue shown by the opposing team?

Penalty to Spain Torres steps up. Takes the ball between his feet and does a tumble releasing the ball towards the end with it flying into the net! Does it stand?

Alternatively in the Germany v Poland game, the poles have a new free-kick trick to break the deadlock after 89 minutes. They line all 11 players behind a free-kick virtually on the edge of the box. Each player runs as if to strike the ball. With ten players lining up in a straight line towards goal and forming a tunnel with their legs //\\. The last of the 11 (goalkeeper - of course)smashes the shot along the ground through the tunnel of the 10 players with the ball going straight into the net! the Germans look bewildered and cant believe they didn't react quicker! They lose the game 1-0 and euro 2008 as a result of back-room fighting over the goal. An attacking player is off the pitch (beyond the attacking by-line) when the ball is played forward almost to the by-line and as the ball is coming towards him he rejoins the field of play, collects the ball and scores.

At the point when the pass was played the player was inactive so technically wasn't offside when receiveing the ball!

    5) A player commits a serious foul worthy of a red card allthough the ref allows the attacking team to play the advantage rather than stop a goal scoring oppertunity, the ball blasts off the post and rolls into the attacking goal as the keeper has fallen over. Does the goal stand or does the ref dis-allow it and send off the player who commited the foul??

    6) The ball is burst as it rolls over debris on the pitch, a player scores with the burst ball as the keeper completley misreads the shot due to the burst ball, as the ball hasnt gone out of play can it be replaced or does the goal stand???

    a) Take the most important 5th penalty and miss, because you are a DEFENDER, and leave a proven striker such as Nicolas Anelka not to take one until it's too late.

    b) Let a proven striker or midfielder, such as Tevez, Nani, Anderson, Hargreaves or Carrick to score so your team wins the match and you don't have to cry like a baby.

You decide. Would you rather "play the hero" or be a proper captain and concentrate on player's strengths. You know, defenders defend and forwrds score the goals. It's a tricky one.

Is this allowed during the normal course of play in a shoot-out?

Sure one team hit the woodwork twice, but the others missed an absolute sitter in extra time and two sitters in the first half. I should also have noticed that the team who supposedly outplayed the other had less shots on target, much less possession, and should have been 3-0 down by half time. I also must surely have seen that the so-called dominant team's goal took two deflections and the keeper slipped.

i'd stick them both under fair play.

What does the referee do here? Does his name go on the scoresheet? Is it a free-kick to the midfielder's team or the other team?

    Second scenario...

The ball is about to go out for a goal-kick when the referee stops it, for the convience of the goalkeeper (so he doesn't have to go and get it) and passes it to the goalkeeper. The goalkeeper thanks the referee but accidentally the ball slids underneath his foot (but doesn't touch) and trickles into the net. Does the goal count as it was still in play and the referee scored it? Who's name goes on the scoresheet? Is it a goal kick? A free-kick to the goalkeeper's team? The referee purposely hit the ball to the goalkeeper but he didn't mean for it to eneter the net. What happens now?

What does the referee do in these two situations after scoring a goal himself?

B: Disallow the goal, send off the goalkeeper and award a goal kick to Team A?

C: Disallow the goal, send off the goalkeeper and award a penalty to Team A?

i think what would happen is that the team with 11 players have to sacrifice a player for the shootout to make sure the number of players is even. I think this happened a little while ago when England played Holland in the under-21's and we reached this stage (England had lost a player to injury), so the Dutch had to sacrifice someone.

The referee does not need his cards to book someone or send them off, the cards merely being a way of showing everyone else what the referee's decision is.

What would happen if a team were winning one nil and then decided to stand in a circle with the ball in the middle of the circle, what would happen because the oppossing team cant get it because they had to foul someone.

of course it can't happen in a shootout, one player goes up to take a penalty, he can't tap it to the side for someone else to take the shot. otherwise why can't other players knock in a rebound to a saved penalty??

What would happen, if by some bizarre coincedence, one of the linesmen pulls up with an injured hamstring, unable to continue and is replaced by the fourth official. 10 minutes later the fourth official is incapacitated by a severe stomach bug and is also unable to continue.

There is now only one available linesman, so what happens?

Would play just carry on as happens usually or because of the goal opportunity, would the goal be given?

it's a tense final, and with the game nearing it's end and the score at 1-1, it looks set for a draw. tackles are flying in, and when you blow to send off a player for a two footed lunge all the other players get involved especially from the team whose player is injured. the player claims he misstimed it, and tells you he was also wound up from previous comments the player he tackled had said about his ethnicity and background. what do you do about the player he tackled? is any action taken or is that player trying to escape being sent off?

Most definetely - I can't believe that anyone would be against it. I recently saw the Toulon tournament and the standard was pretty high. What pleased me more though (as an Italian) was that fact that all 23 Italy players are already a part of a Serie A squad. This is fantastic news for Italian football and I think the reality in Italy has finally sunk in about some foreign imports. 10 - 15 years ago, Italian football youngsters suffered in much the same way that is happening here now. There was too much of a reliance on foreigners and this was also at a time of huge salaries, big TV deals, massive investment - Sound familiar. Then the bubble burst. Italy's poor showing at Euro 96, France 98, Japan 2002, Euro 2004, left most in no doubt that clubs had to go back to grass roots football for the sake of the national team. Yes the current italian squad is getting older, but most have already won an Under 21 championships and soon they will be flooded with more talent from the current crop.
The 6 + 5 is a good idea and it may even rekindle some of the fun that used to happen on Derby Days - just think Arsenal v Tottenham might mean something again!!

    Scenario 1

Last ten minutes of the final match of the season and game is a dead rubber. Sir Alex Ferguson introduces a celebrity supporter E Holmes to play out the game.

    Scenario 2

The linesman/assistant headbuts a player after suffering constant abuse. The player is taken off not to return. The player's team has already used its substitutes but rightly wants to introduce a fourth substitute in place of the casualty after all it wasn't their fault.

    Scenario 3

Sepp Blatter gets stuck in the lift at Wembley. An engineer is needed. Michel Platini demands that the second half is delayed by fifteen minutes until lift lowered to ground floor. Sir Alex Ferguson demands that the game is continued. Rafa Benitez is happy for the delay. Your career or your rulebook?
