The trouble is that human stories can be so politicised...
Sorry about that....... Been a couple of weeks since my last blog. This week I've been to Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin to talk up "London Undersound" - both the album and October/ November tour. Last week I was trying to finish off the score for a film and a videogame "milestone", along with putting down some guitar for Imogen Heap's forthcoming album. She previewed me some of the tracks. Really stunning...
Been quite strange talking about the album with journalists. We get into a lot of mad stuff about music and politics. Although everyone seems to be into the music, some feel it's quite a political album, which they also like. I feel it's about human stories. The trouble is that human stories can be so politicised...
You know, if you have someone like Natty, one of the album collaborators and guests on the show, who was standing in front of the bus when it exploded at Tavistock square on 7/7 or was a few train carriages behind Jean Charles De Menezes when he got shot a couple of weeks later, his human experience is bound to feel politically charged... but it's still a human story. It's still a London story.
Anyway....
You don't want to get me started on politics.

It's strange that you talk about politicising of issues around the world. I saw Nandita Das' movie Firaaq at the London Film Festival yesterday and similar points were raised. The movie, although centered around the 2002 Gujrat violence, dealt with the aftermath and how it effected human relationships, emotions, and life. We see war and violence on the news and read about it in the media, but rarely do people think about the human story of after. Charlie Wilson's War is another classic example of what the US did in Afghanistan in the 80's yet failed to follow up on the human aspect. Ironic how that has come full circle.

Nandita Das did quite an open Q&A afterwards and it was clear that the movie was about human life and relationships and was not a political tool. Its a talking point, start if you will. London Undersound is another reflection, a more current and geographically close one that would have had some effect on our lives. Some of people asking questions did make me think whether we ,in the so called developed world, actually understand the human issue and more importantly whether we want to.

I think 2nd and 3rd generation South Asian conform to a mainstream way of life; a very western way. This was illustrated by the large crowd gathered on Trafalgar Square to celebrate Diwali. Do they really understand what they are celebrating?

I think that we have been brought up with too many prejudice against people by some skewed thinking by our parents and wider families, the original 1st generation South Asians. I think that is changing gradually with reverse learning from the children to their parents, although I feel that this is a minority at the moment.
