Huge congratulations to Adam Woodyatt for scooping the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Soap Awards on Saturday night! He’s brought life and dram - and many a failed marriage - to the well-known character of Ian Beale since the show's first episode, 28 years ago.
In a nice touch, Adam was awarded the gong by a teary-eyed Gillian Taylforth who played his on-screen mum, Kathy Beale, in the soap for 15 years.
In Gillian’s speech, she said, “Having been there from day one, he’s EastEnders’ longest serving cast member, whose on-screen character might be one of the most hapless, scheming and, let’s be honest, bloody irritating people you could want to meet. But that is testimony to what a great actor he is because in real life he’s one of the most loving, warm and entertaining people you could meet!”
Rita Simons, who plays Roxy Mitchell, led the tributes online, tweeting “@AdamWoodyatt #legend so lovely to see u collect that award. #longtimecoming what a complete diamond u r. Love ya x”
After the awards, Adam tweeted, “The kind words from June, Tish, Di, Gilly and Steve mean a lot, five people I love working with.”
