In response to some of the comments regarding the current Ronnie and Kat storyline, Executive Producer Bryan Kirkwood has written the following blog post about the decision to conclude the storyline in the Spring:

EastEnders has a long tradition of dealing with social issues in a powerful and dramatic way. In its 25 years it has tackled many taboo subjects from HIV to paedophilia, matching drama with public service in a way that has continually kept it as one of the most talked about shows on television.

When we embarked on the story of Ronnie and Kat it was very much with this in mind. We researched extensively to make sure we would be both factually correct and emotionally truthful.

We received enormous help from charities, health professionals and bereaved parents themselves, who went out of their way to advise the story-liners, writers and actors. Our aim was - and still is - to tell a strong story that would, in the telling - raise the profile of Cot Death in the UK.

It's clear that we've managed to do this, and that traffic to the FSID's website has increased by over 500%; but we are also mindful of the fact that in doing so, sections of our audience have found the storyline challenging.

EastEnders never sets out to upset its audience; not only would it be counter-productive, it would be a breach of a long-established trust that we can deliver truthful stories that inspire debate in a way that's acceptable to a family audience.

Although we have had complaints we have also had positive responses from people who have been through the experiences we are currently dramatising who feel we've done this and have contacted us to offer their backing.

A large portion of audience are watching and being supportive of the storyline so we owe those viewers the opportunity to continue to engage with it and see the storyline through to it's rightful conclusion.

Whenever we embark on a story at EastEnders we always leave it open-ended to monitor and listen to audience reaction. With this in mind we are going to bring the story to a close on screen in the Spring.

As the story progresses and Kat is reunited with her child, we hope to explore the impact of the tragic events that have befallen the characters in a way that is powerful, but true to the best public service tradition of the show.

I think the baby swap storyline was probably one of the most heartbreaking ones ever :( There are some women who actually go through cot death of their own kid / kids!

    Imagine how they feel!?!?

Anyways, EastEnders has always been my favourite TV programme, but now I just don't know what to think. Don't get me wrong - I still love EastEnders, but just think that the storylines are getting very depressing and aren't being revealed for such a long time, and it's getting quite boring.

I would be so happy if there was a less depressing storyline e.g. wedding.

    Anyone agree???

I personaly was not affended by this storyline because its a storyline! It's a fictional show it's obvious no real mother would ever swap their recently deceased baby with someone elses live and well baby. The accusation that this show implies that a baby swap of theese cercamstances actully at all could happen is obserd! If you can't understand this show is fictional then you might as well believe Ronnie is wandering around the East end of London with her stolen baby!If you still can't see this storyline is perfectly exceptable then you don't have to watch the soap opera!People are acting like they are being forced into watching this show!

@scorpio_babe, Eastenders have actuly just finnished filming the baby swap conclusion where kat and alfie are reunited with tommy . Apparently ronnie faces true reality of what she has done following max 's car accident , so by early april all comes out as ronnie confesses to what she has done . As far as im concerned they should have ended it at 'tommy's' funeral not drag it and milk it till now.

I think people have just gone to far complaining I think Eastenders hasn't gone too far with this it was a really great and emotional episode. I heard the actress who plays Ronnie got some hassel on the streets saying"You shouldn't have done that" and i think that's really pathetic and sad the actress who play Ronnie and Kat just go to work and go back home it's JUST WORK! it's just really sad to hear. And people haven't been giving credit to them for the amazing epidode they did because they did a fantastic performance and im really looking forward to see how Ronnie tells everyone.

The BBC, imo, has run with this storyline for far too long now.
Hours after the New Year baby-swap episode aired, the BBC was flooded with complaints. In response they promised to end the story by reuniting Kat with her baby, as I understand, IN EARLY SPRING.

Yet here we are, in the 10th week and the fiasco continues. It is not as if it could not have been resolved by now. It is public knowledge the BBC films EE about 6 weeks in advance, so there has been plenty of time to rewrite and film a resolution since promising to do so. Nevertheless, it has not been done.

I appreciate that there are other story lines of some interest, and I accept that SW has done a super job of portraying an anguished Ronnie, however, when all is said and done a promise is a promise, and I for one have been hanging on watching EE in some hope that this promise will be kept.

And then it occurred to me. The BBC may actually be playing games with us, the viewers. I cannot be the only viewer hanging on in anticipation of Kat and baby Tommy being reunited? And given the depth of viewer psychology that is used in writing these dramas, I guess the BBC is guilty of actually prolonging the agony for us viewers for their own nefarious reasons.

Could it possibly be that the BBC is behaving somewhat unscrupulously over this whole affair? Imo, it could be accused of immorally and cold bloodedly exploiting the interest they have created in this unfortunate story in the first place, by prolonging the story [for another 6 weeks, I hear] when they could probably have ended it by now.

The BBC created a story which caused a rumpus; they promised to do something about it; public interest is raised and kept on hold while the story runs and runs. Bit calculated if you ask me.

Do the right thing. Reunite Kat and baby Tommy. Sooner rather than later.
I for one cannot tolerate 6 more weeks of this ill-conceived and miserable story.

I fully suport EE with this storyline.
I do understand that it is trumatic for some viewers who has lost a child before.
If you don't like it don't watch it. Simple.
EE portraits real life but it doesn't inspire you to steal another kid. Does it?

This Storyline, though heartbreakingly tragic, shows compassion and fear and an incredible amount of guilt on Ronnies part. We can see that she hates herself entirely for this. We can see that she has her reasons and I think that the only people who truely hate this storyline are the people who don't understand it. It's insulting that people assume that this will be offensive to people who have experienced cot death as it shows compassion towards Kat and Alfie. and it also shows the sheer desperation of Ronnie. Can anyone guaruntee that they haven't or won't have the same deperation that Ronnie feels, if they were put in this situation. And the simple fact of the matter is, it's a soap opera. this is what the genre is about: over dramatising and throwing taboo subjects out into the community. i take my hat off to your writers and producers. you're all incredibly brave and maybe the story was a bad idea, but it's made you all talk hasn't it? and It's made you all desperate to carry on watching hasn't it? I'm happy to be a liscence payer for this because it targets HUMAN emotions, not the emotions that are being portayed on this blog. you people who are saying this story is sick. its not ... its Human. I think you're doing this story really well. After the danielle story I endeavoured to stop watching, I thought that was heart breaking and wrong. This is heart breaking, but it's human and compassionate.
