We’re delighted to confirm that
the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be paying a visit to the
TARDIS in the first week of July.

Every year Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visit projects across Wales during what is known as ‘Wales
Week’. These visits help to promote the region, its charities and its products
and give Their Royal Highnesses a chance to meet local people and see
first-hand the work they’re involved with.

A highlight of ‘Wales Week’ this year will be a visit by Their
Royal Highnesses to the home of Doctor Who - BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock
Studios in Cardiff - to mark the programme’s 50th anniversary. The show
makes extensive use of locations across Wales but all studio filming is done at
Roath Lock and the TARDIS interior has been housed there since the Christmas special, The Snowmen. During this
visit the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will meet Matt Smith (the
Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara) as well as some of the Time Lord’s most
famous adversaries.

A Clarence House spokesman said: ‘The Prince and The Duchess
always enjoy their annual visit to Wales and this year they are looking forward
to a varied programme of engagements including everything from Dylan Thomas’s
Boat House to Doctor Who’s TARDIS! Their Royal Highnesses are also keen to
highlight the vital work being done across Wales by some of the charities they
are involved with.’

It will be the second royal encounter for Doctor Who this
year after Jenna Coleman was presented to Her Majesty The Queen when a
major new extension of the BBC’s Broadcasting House was officially opened
earlier this month.

We’ll bring you more on the royal visit very soon!

Doctor Who returns on 23
November with the 50th anniversary special.

It’s been announced that Jenna Coleman will play Lydia
Wickham in Death Comes To Pemberley, a major new 3x60-minute serial that will
be made for BBC One and directed by the BAFTA award-winning Daniel Percival.

Based on the bestselling novel by P.D. James, the story
returns to the world of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and involves its
characters in a new tale of murder and emotional mayhem.

Producer David Thompson said, ‘We're delighted to be filming
this witty, original and beautifully imagined book from Britain's best loved
crime writer - murder and Jane Austen, a delicious combination! This will be a
very unexpected and audacious period drama. And we are so pleased with the cast
that have been drawn to it…’

Aside from Jenna Coleman that cast includes Matthew Rhys who
stars as Mr Darcy and Anna Maxwell Martin – Suki in the Ninth Doctor adventure The
Long Game - who plays Elizabeth. Doctor Who fans will also recognise
Tom Ward – Captain Latimer in The Snowmen and here playing Colonel
Fitzwilliam, and James Norton who recently appeared as Onegin in Cold War.
Eleanor Tomlinson - Eve in The Sarah Jane Adventures two-parter, The Mad Woman
in the Attic – is also on board playing Georgiana Darcy.

Filming on Death Comes To Pemberley will begin this
month on location in Yorkshire. The drama was commissioned by Controller of BBC
Drama Commissioning, Ben Stephenson and former Controller of BBC One, now
Director of Television, Danny Cohen.

The Ninth Doctor’s era came to a dramatic conclusion on 18 June, 2005 in The Parting of the Ways. It was the first time for over twenty years that we’d seen the actor playing the Doctor hand over with a regeneration scene in the course of a series and so anticipation in advance of the episode was understandably huge!

The adventure didn’t disappoint and after seeing a vast army of Daleks defeated the Ninth Doctor saved Rose Tyler’s life, but at a cost. His body was irretrievably damaged and following a brief farewell conversation in the TARDIS, he began to regenerate…

The Ninth Doctor was the first Doctor for a new generation of viewers and he was markedly different to the Time Lord’s previous personas. He appeared less eccentric than earlier Doctors, dressing in fairly unremarkable clothes and speaking with a northern accent that gave him a down-to-earth quality. His attitude towards humans (‘stupid apes!’) was harsher than usual and his stance on not getting involved with companions’ home lives – ‘I don’t do families’ – changed when he met Rose’s mum. ‘Nine hundred years of time and space,’ he mused after one particularly painful meeting with Jackie Tyler, ‘and I've never been slapped by someone's mother…’

But he could be dark and brooding; an individual still haunted by the Time War and his part in it. This seemed to make the Ninth Doctor determined to live for the moment. ‘All that counts is here and now…’ he once told Rose. And yet he could switch from sombre gravitas to an almost childish happiness, always eager to meet new species and experience all of time and space. ‘This is what I travel for,’ he once enthused, ‘To see history happening right in front of us!

The Ninth Doctor appeared in 13 episodes and you can revisit them all right now! You’ll find some great clips, including an interview with Christopher Eccleston – the Ninth Doctor – galleries, fact files and much more. And on our Ninth Doctor page you can discover more about the character and the actor that brought him to life plus you’ll also be able download wallpapers featuring moments from his era.

Or why not simply step back in time 8 years and revisit the episode where he regenerated, taking another look at trailers that led up to the end of the Ninth Doctor and The Parting of the Ways…

This weekend marks the sixth anniversary of the return of the Master in Utopia. The charismatic villain first appeared in 1971 in Terror of the Autons, immediately establishing himself as a worthy opponent. He was merciless, highly intelligent and willing to use futuristic firepower whenever he felt threatened, shrinking victims with his lethal ‘tissue compression eliminator’. But he was also charming and his dry sense of humour could raise a smile in the direst circumstances.

More interesting, perhaps, was the strange friendship the Master shared with the Doctor. In The Sea Devils, despite all his fellow Time Lord’s crimes, the Doctor feels sympathy for the Master when he’s cooped up in prison and even asks if there’s anything he can do to make his sentence more bearable. And the Master had an undoubted soft spot for his old adversary, remarking on one occasion, ‘A cosmos without the Doctor scarcely bears thinking about…’

We saw the Master in many forms from a suave-looking humanoid to a snake-like creature that was able to take over another body for his own nefarious ends. The Eighth Doctor branded this version of the Master ‘pure evil’ and was able to prevent him destroying Earth before he vanished… The next time the Doctor encountered him his nemesis was in the guise of Professor Yana on the planet Malcassairo. In this episode, Utopia, he resembled a kindly old scientist - a disguise that was so good even he didn’t realise he was the Master until his true personality was unleashed, at which point he killed his faithful assistant and stole the TARDIS, triggering a whole new round of battles with the Doctor…

This week we’re celebrating the Master with new galleries, clips and much more, so be sure to some back to find out more about the criminal that even his own people described as ‘one of the most evil and corrupt beings our Time Lord race ever produced!’ Here’s to the Master!

Jenna Coleman was presented
to Her Majesty The Queen today when the major new extension of the BBC’s
Broadcasting House was officially opened.

The Queen, who previously
re-opened the refurbished old Broadcasting House in April 2006, toured the new
building including the BBC Newsroom at the heart of the complex. The Director
of Television, Danny Cohen, introduced The Queen to a selection of BBC
presenters including Sir Bruce Forsyth and David Dimbleby. Jenna Coleman, who
returns as Clara in the Doctor Who anniversary special in November, had
the honour of meeting The Queen, appropriately enough by the TARDIS!

The Queen first toured the old
Broadcasting House in 1939 while still Princess Elizabeth, with King George VI,
Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, and a highlight of her latest visit was
her unveiling of a contemporary commemorative plaque embedded with the iconic
image of the early BBC microphone.

The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show. Matt first stepped into the TARDIS in 2010 and will leave the role at the end of this year after starring in the unmissable 50th Anniversary in November and regenerating in the Christmas special. During his time as the Doctor, Matt has reached over 30 million unique UK viewers and his incarnation has seen the show go truly global. He was also the first actor to be nominated for a BAFTA in the role.

Matt quickly won over fans to be voted Best Actor by Readers of Doctor Who Magazine for the 2010 season. He also received a nod for his first series at the National Television Awards, before winning the Most Popular Male Drama Performance award in 2012.

Matt has played one of the biggest roles in TV with over 77 million fans in the UK, USA and Australia alone!

Matt Smith says: "Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show. I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.

Having Steven Moffat as show runner write such varied, funny, mind bending and brilliant scripts has been one of the greatest and most rewarding challenges of my career. It's been a privilege and a treat to work with Steven, he's a good friend and will continue to shape a brilliant world for the Doctor.

The fans of Doctor Who around the world are unlike any other; they dress up, shout louder, know more about the history of the show (and speculate more about the future of the show) in a way that I've never seen before, your dedication is truly remarkable. Thank you so very much for supporting my incarnation of the Time Lord, number Eleven, who I might add is not done yet, I'm back for the 50th anniversary and the Christmas special!

It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one'. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says : "Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me: the way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry, I just never knew what was coming next. The Doctor can be clown and hero, often at the same time, and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him - sometimes literally - his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.

But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.

Of course, this isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"

Jenna Coleman, adds: "I could not have imagined coming into
the show without Matt as my Doctor, holding my hand, really, quite literally. I
totally lucked-out in having a creative, generous, clever, and lovely fella to
work alongside day after day.

I feel so privileged to have been part of Matt's reign, to have to been
companion to what is and what I think always will be one of our greatest
Doctors.

He is so in love with the show, he works tirelessly hard, surprises me
every day, always creating and discovering something new about the Doctor. A
true gent, a leading man and a very special friend.

I know it will be a very difficult goodbye for me, but I
for one can't wait to see where his career takes him next. And of course with the same welcome I was
brought in with, I look forward to welcoming the next Doctor. BUT it's not over
till it's over. See ya at the big 5-0!"
Having starred alongside three different companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) and most recently Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), Matt's Doctor has fought Daleks and Cybermen, as well as Weeping Angels in New York. Regularly heard shouting 'run' and 'Geronimo', through Matt's Doctor fans have been introduced to a new culinary combination - fish fingers and custard!
Matt's spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23rd November 2013 - TUNE IN!

We’ll have a special video from Matt - coming soon!

River
Song made her first appearance five years ago today, leading an expedition to
The Library where she found the Vashta Nerada, Donna Noble… and the
Doctor. Although he didn’t have a clue who this charismatic archaeologist was,
she certainly knew him, recalling days he had yet to live with an affection
that indicated they would become more than just traveling companions.

In the half
decade since that first encounter River has appeared in over a dozen episodes
and we’ve seen glimpses of her whole incredible life. The troubled childhood
where she became one of Kovarian’s pawns; the early Leadworth days with her mum
and dad – Amy and Rory; her battles side-by-side with the Eleventh Doctor
as together they fought Weeping Angels, the Silence and the
Great Intelligence; the romance, the ‘wedding’ and even what the Doctor
described as their first date… a jaunt to Berlin with a plan to kill Hitler!

River Song
was the brainchild of Steven Moffat who described her as ‘funny, flirtatious
[and] mad’. River’s crazier qualities have ensured she’s been a brilliant and
unpredictable factor in the Doctor’s adventures but she also has a softer side
that must have touched the Time Lord’s hearts.
“When one’s in love with an ageless god who insists on the face of a
twelve-year-old,’ she once confided, “one does one’s best to hide the damage,”
later telling Amy, “Never ever let him see you age. He doesn’t like endings.”

But today we
salute River Song, also known as Melody Pond, also known as Mrs Robinson and
frequently known to spread complete and rather wonderful chaos!

We’ve
assembled some of our favourite River quotes, unveiled a new gallery
devoted to her, created some spot-the-difference puzzles and even
created a new quiz so you can find out how much you know about the
daring Doctor Song!

And we want to know – which was your favourite River Song adventure? To make your opinion count, go to the homepage and in the section to the lower right-hand side, cast your vote. And if you need reminding about the life and times of River Song, you’ll find information, clips and more about each of her adventures.
One of the many things we love about River is her ability to come up
with the right line at the right time… We’ve got a hundred favourite quotes
from River but whittled them down to a dozen or so and put a few of our absolute
faves below…

You can let us know your favourite lines – either ones we’ve mentioned
below or ones which escaped the list by emailing us at thedoctor@bbc.co.uk or by tweeting us @bbcdoctorwho.

‘Hello, sweetie!’
The first words we ever hear River speak to the Doctor, heard first
in Silence in the Library.

‘Like I said on the dance floor, you might want to find something to
hang on to!’
River, escaping from The Byzantium in The Time of Angels

‘If you like… but where's the fun in that?’
River, replying to the Doctor’s question – can he trust her? - in
Flesh and Stone

‘Right, then. I have questions, but number one is this: what in the
name of sanity have you got on your head?’
River, spotting the Doctor’s fez in The Big Bang

‘Rule one: the Doctor lies!’
River being blunt in The Big Bang

‘You’ve got a time machine. I've got a gun. What the hell… Let’s kill
Hitler!’
River (as ‘Mels’) in Let’s Kill Hitler

‘Right! Let’s see then… Whoa, it's all going on down there, isn't it?
The hair! Oh, the hair! It just doesn't stop, does it? Look at that. Everything
changes. Oh, but I love it! I love it! I'm all sort of… mature… Hello, Benjamin!
River, immediately post-regeneration in Let’s Kill Hitler

‘New York growled at my window, but I was ready for it!’
River, writing as Melody Malone in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘If it was that easy I’d get you to do it!’
River, talking to the Doctor in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘Never let him see the damage. And never ever let him see you age. He
doesn’t like endings.’
River, talking to Amy in The Angels Take Manhattan

‘Whenever and wherever you want, but not all the time. One psychopath
per TARDIS, don’t you think?’
River, replying to the Doctor’s request to travel with him in The
Angels Take Manhattan

‘I died saving him. In return, he saved me to a database in the biggest
library in the universe. Left me like a book on a shelf. Didn’t even say
goodbye. He doesn't like endings.’
River to Clara in The Name of the Doctor

‘There’s only one way I’d accept. If you ever loved me, say it like
you’re going to come back.’
River, replying to the Doctor’s question of how he should say
goodbye in The Name of the Doctor

‘Until the next time, Doctor… Oh, there’s one more thing… Spoilers…
Goodbye… sweetie!’
River’s final words to the Doctor in The Name of the Doctor

Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat arrived at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York yesterday (Monday 20 May) to pick up an Institutional Peabody Award for Doctor Who. But that's not the only good news on the awards front - Doctor Who has also been nominated in the Best Drama Series category in the TVChoice Awards 2013.

The prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards celebrate excellence in radio and television broadcasting and is one of the highest honours in television. The awarding committee described the show as:

"Seemingly immortal, 50-years-old and still running, this engaging, imaginative sci-fi/fantasy series is awarded an Institutional Peabody for evolving with technology and the times like nothing else in the known television universe".

The Peabody Award is voted for by a panel of distinguished academics, television critics, industry practitioners and experts in culture and the arts. The TVChoice awards are voted for by you, the audience. Now in its 17th year honouring TV's most popular stars and shows, you can back your favourites by voting online or via the magazine forms.

The TV Choice Awards will take place on Monday 9 September so hopefully Matt and Jenna will have another trophy to pick up! Good luck to all the nominees!

A little earlier, Doctor Who’s lead writer and
executive producer, Steven Moffat, gave this thank you message…

Well that was all a bit Keystone Cops, wasn't it? Our
biggest surprise, our most secret episode, a revelation about the Doctor that
changes everything...

... and we'd have got away with it too, if we hadn't
accidentally sent Blu Ray copies of Name Of The Doctor to 210 Doctor Who fans
in America.

Erm - security-wise, that's not GOOD, is it? I mean, it's
not top notch, it's hard to defend as professional level, hard-line secrecy.

My favourite fact is that they're BLU RAYS. Listen, we
don't just leak any old rubbish, we leak in high def. 1080p or nothing, that's
us. Every last pixel in beautifully rendered detail. It's like getting caught
extra naked.

But here's the thing. Never mind us blundering fools,
check out the fans. 210 of them, with the top secret episode in their grasp -
and because we asked nicely, they didn't breathe a word. Not one. Even Doctor
Who websites have been closing their comments sections, just in case anyone
blurts. I'm gobsmacked. I'm impressed. Actually, I'm humbled. And we are all very
grateful.

Now you might be thinking, what does all this matter?
It's a plot development in the mad old fantasy world of Doctor Who, why is that
important? Well of course, it's not important, and in the scheme of things, it
doesn't matter at all. Just as it doesn't matter when you're telling a joke,
and some idiot shouts out the punchline before you finish. It's irritating,
that's all. It's bad manners.

Well no bad manners here! 210 Doctor Who fans kept the
secret, and many, many more fans helped. I wish I could send you all flowers,
but I don't know where you live (and given our record, you really shouldn't be
sharing private information with us.) So instead, if we can get our act
together - and I forgive you for thinking that's a BIG if - there will be a
little video treat released later tonight.

10 plus 11 gives you…

That video is available to watch now!

We’re delighted to confirm a new series of Doctor Who has
been commissioned and the show’s lead writer and executive producer, Steven
Moffat, has revealed he’s already plotting a brand new run of adventures for
the Doctor.

But way before that hits our screens we have a huge amount
to look forward to. Your calendars should already have a big red circle around
23 November because that’s when the TARDIS returns in the frankly
Earth-shattering adventure that celebrates half a century of Doctor Who. This
3D special stars Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman with David Tennant and John Hurt,
seen briefly at the end of The Name of the Doctor. Billie Piper returns
alongside Jemma Redgrave, Joanna Page… and the Zygons!

If you can’t wait until then you can see special videos
about the special – filming at the Tower of London and in Trafalgar
Square. We’ve a new gallery for the 50th plus a news
item on the cast.

Later this year the BBC also premieres An Adventure in Space
and Time, the brilliant drama written by Mark Gatiss that looks at the genesis
of Doctor Who. If this video location report is anything to go by, we’re
in for a memorable insight into the show’s origins.

And given that this year’s Christmas Special will be
rounding off such a spectacular year we’re sure it will kick off the Doctor’s
next half century in style! But that’s not all. Big plans are being put
in place that will well and truly celebrate the Doctor’s half-centenary.
Make sure you check back for some exciting announcements!

In the meantime, this site will be updating regularly,
bringing you the latest news, videos and much more. No-one should ever have to
go a day without watching Doctor Who and you don’t need to! Check out the clips
section where you’ll find a wealth of great moments from the show’s first
50 years. And if you fancy finding out more about the earliest Doctors, now’s
your chance with A Beginner’s Guide to the Doctors.

As the Doctor himself said on
Trenzalore, he’s had loads of bodies. That’s because the Doctor is a Time Lord,
and Time Lords have the ability to regenerate their bodies when they’re worn
out or dying. This means that his old body transforms into a new one, along
with a new appearance and persona – a brand new Doctor! But underneath these
surface changes, he’s still the same man, the same hero and adventurer.

The series finale gave us glimpses
of many Doctors, including the very first - that was the white-haired figure
that Clara spoke to at the beginning of the episode. We saw the ‘impossible
girl’ interrupt him as he was about to steal a TARDIS, advising him to take the
time machine that he still travels in today. The Second Doctor was the man
wearing a big, furry coat and the Third was behind the wheel of his trusty old
car, Bessie. It’s clear that every Doctor has a distinctive look – tall and handsome,
short and impish, old, young… All different! But what’s more exciting is their
unique personalities and eccentricities - you can read more by following the
links below. You’ll see that the Doctor has always been a hero, but in
different ways in different times.

The guide below shows the Doctors
- click on any of them and you’ll be taken to a page that gives you the low
down on that particular Doctor. What they were like, who they travelled with
and what caused them to regenerate. If you want to find out more, simply follow
the links to their stories and you’ll discover some brilliant clips from their
adventures, galleries, fact files and much more. We’ll be adding much more in
the coming months, but for now, here’s a guide to the greatest hero of them
all: The Doctor.
