All this week we’ve been announcing nominations for the title of Doctor Who’s ultimate villain. You’ll soon be able to choose your winner from a list of ten iconic enemies and so far we’ve covered three of the nominees: Cybermen, Daleks and the Silence.
The Fourth nominee would insist upon being part of the process – in fact we suspect he’d be disappointed if he wasn’t nominated in this celebration of villainy… He revels in chaos and evil and has teamed up with terrors ranging from Autons and Daleks to Daemons and the Toclafane. He’s caused mayhem all across the cosmos and even the Doctor himself called him his ‘best enemy’. He is, of course, the Master.
The Master was once a friend of the Doctor and they attended the Academy together on Gallifrey. But when the Doctor fled his home world he travelled the universe helping people and fighting tyranny whereas the Master left Gallifrey to seek power, hatch evil schemes and never allowed a sense of morality to impede those aims. His plans were often insanely ambitious and bizarre. On one occasion he attempted to gain dominion over the entire universe and later he almost transformed every living human into a crazy version of himself, nearly creating - quite literally - a Master race.
But despite these impious impulses the Master could be great company! He was charming, blessed with a winning sense of humour and a keen intelligence that even the Doctor had to admire. But on many, many occasions, people who got close to the Master, from the crusty Colonel Trenchard to the beautiful Lucy Saxon, realised too late that befriending this Time Lord was the worst mistake of their lives...
You can find out more about the Master and see the many faces of the Doctor’s old enemy in our exclusive Master gallery! You can also watch clips from his debut adventure or enjoy some memorable moments, photos and more from classic stories including The Claws of Axos, The Daemons and The Deadly Assassin. If you want to check out what happened to the Master after the Time War, we’ve got some great content around his battles with the Tenth Doctor… Just revisit Utopia, The Last of the Time Lords or The End of Time.
Tomorrow we’ll be bringing you the fifth monster or villain to be nominated and remember to visit the site over the next few days so you can discover the complete top ten contenders… and then vote for the one you think is Doctor Who’s ultimate baddie! The winner – as voted for by you - will unveiled in the ‘Doctor Who: Monsters and Villains Weekend’ on BBC Three in November, as part of the celebrations to mark 50 years of Doctor Who!
