Haydn and Mozart are known to have played in a string quartet together, Rebecca. Do you know what they played, Denis, and who was listening? This is a concert I would definitely have liked to attend. Any thoughts, b?

The quartet consisted of Dittersdorf, Haydn (violins), Mozart (viola) and Vanhal (cello) As they were all composers, I can't help thinking that they must have played some of their own pieces, however reluctant they may have seemed at the beginning of the evening! Has anyone any fly-on-the-wall thoughts about how they would have got on together and what they might have played?

There is often a significant difference between creative artists like composers, and interpreters of their work, including the finest instrumentalists, singers and conductors.

Psychologists can tell us a lot about the different personality types involved, Denis. My own guess would be that composers would, in general, be more open to ideas and innovation than most musicians. It is, after all, their job to create something new.

The creative tension, and natural competition, between Haydn, and his younger contemporary, Mozart, would have been interesting to observe.
