Dido's Lament
On Wednesday's Composer of the Week, Radio 3 presenter Donald MacLeod played most of Act III of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. This was the only item soprano and evening presenter Catherine Bott picked out when she previewed the 10pm repeat, which, as it was she who was singing Dido, might have seemed immodest had not hers been the one of the best versions of 'When I am Laid' ever recorded. It is tense, tragic and drenched with emotion and she can be justly proud of it.

I reckon that Cate is one of BBC Radio 3's true stars, Rick. She can not only sing; she can also present very well indeed. As for Dido's lament, I would agree that it is one of the most captivating pieces of music ever written in the English language. Cate certainly does it justice in her recording:

I commend it to everyone on 3. All the best, c.

It was a real pleasure to hear Glen Gould play Haydn this morning during Breakfast Music. Although as a musician he claims his first affections are not to the Rococo age, this is not reflected in his playing and the nuances of his performance achievied its spirit beautifully. Every note meant something just as they should and the way he was able to weave well marked themes amongst scalic passages truly clever.
Thanks
