There was a big cheer as athlete number 2,000 finished 14th and last in the men's marathon at the MCG, or "the G" as it is affectionately known in Melbourne. Errol Duncan, a 45-year-old runner from St Helena had never run a marathon before, according to BBC commentator Steve Cram. In the end, he clocked a time of three hours 11 minutes almost exactly an hour behind the race winner. For the record, he would have had the bettering of just one of the women's field - Jamaican Arieta Martin, who clocked a time of 3:34.36

But where were all the runners? Was these the smallest-ever fields in the history of the Commonwealth/Empire games?

I was there at the MCG to see the St Helena marathon runner finish. He was fantastic. After every other runner had exited the stadium at the start of the race, he started doing a 3rd lap of the track and had to be directed by an official out through the cones to the exit. He left with his hands raised to a huge roar from the crowd. When he finally made it back he recieved one of the best crowd reactions of the day.

Great coverage but the commentators must grow up. Tracy Morris is NO fun runner. Her journey to the Olympics and then the Commonwealths was achieved with hard work - improving to beat me in half marathon before a storming performance at London.

I missed most of the marathon sadly. Was there anybody participating in a chicken outfit? Or perhaps as a clown? Sir Jimmy Saville?

I did catch the bit where they were running through the park where the F1 Grand Prix will be held. How bizarre was that, 10ft high fences, empty seats, why on earth wasn't the route put throught the streets where there would actually be some spectators.

Maybe if 'Brave Paula' had been running she would have had no excuses for a pit-stop this time.

A true 'Splash-and-Dash' a la F1

It looked awful on TV.

Looks like India will end up with more medals in their kitty than the last games. This argues well for the 2010 Delhi games.
