On the road listening to Sarah Kennedy...

Chris Evans | 08:31 UK time, Thursday, 17 December 2009

...off to see Sir Tel on the wireless - another surreal day in my life. Marky Mark at the wheel, Noah in the back - the boys are on the move.

Have to leave this early to ensure we're not late, even though we will probably be an hour early. Can't be tardy for the great man, not on his penultimate show for heaven's sake.

"What do you want me to do ?" I asked his producer .

"Oh, don't worry about that," replied Lord Boyd of the Barrowlands. . .

Of course, what was I thinking?

CLP

Χ.

P.S. Alas, there was no hidden message in the "who will be next to join us on the sofa ?" reference yesterday.

P.P.S. Obama, you had me at hello but I see you have already been rescued by an O2 angel, so we'll see you there.

P.P.P.S. Loads of snow predicted for tomorrow morning - 8 inches plus they say - will The Togfather even make it in for his last ever show.

P.P.P.P.S. Already getting teary thinking about his last Brekkie radio appearance - again.

    Hi Chris,

Was so excited this morning when Terry said you and Noah had arrived. Got in the car, radio on. All the way to work - no Chris yet. Had to get out of the car at the office, just as you were about to speak! Aaarrgghh! Will just have to Listen Again.

This week has seen Terry Wogan at his very best - he is savouring every moment. I will probably be up tomorrow about 4am, just to make sure I don't miss a single moment of his last show.

Clodagh: missed your contribution on the show this morning .... I was desperately trying to listen, but MrS picked that very moment to tell me something really important. Drat!

    CLP that was so sweet.

Ey Rips who yous callin' Clod. I'll biff you round the mazzard next week, al 'ave you know I've just 'ad a little rock baby named after me, hurrah tanks pip. Apparently I'm also a mucky little aul river full a pram wheels an' barbed wire in Limerick, an' the name means Free Spirit. Oh yes. Not that there's a lot a free spirit in Limerick, a vodka tonic is ruddy dear in Finbarr Murphy's bar in my experience.

The full unabridged Away On A Bender shoulda bin' sung, really, for full impact hahahahahahaha!!

Ah well, that's me for now, off to chase me tail.

    Morning All,

Have to agreed Terry's really is on form this week, great hearing you on the show this morning Chris.

    Clodagh loved your tribute!

Tomorrow I will have to make sure I have my headphones with me so that I can the end of the show when I get into the office.

Need some advice for train journey home on the 24th - ChrissieS and I will be travelling back home during Chris' last show. Will I get a good enough signal on my mobile (Nokia5800) to listen to the show or show I purchase a radio device? Would appreciate any ideas please?

    Have a good day folks!

Ooooh, thanks Chris! I can't wait. The lovely Girlracer has granted my Christmas wish. You were fab on Terry's show this morning and said exactly the right thing. Nice to hear you in the mornings again.

I only managed to listen to a few minutes of CLP and Sir Tel this morning, and only then cos I got caught up in traffic - the bit I heard nearly had me in tears, so I'll listen again later on my own methinks.

Heard your Away in a Manger tribute Clodagh - loved it!

I am so glad I am off tomorrow, I'm going to be a wreck...

Shameful. But in a good way!

Listening to Chris and Terry on the way in this morning, the banter, the future, Chris's words to Terry - so so from the heart. And then they play Strawberry Fields Forever.

I actually had to pull over as I jsut could not stop crying. Happy tears.

2009 has been one heck of a year in more ways than one. As it ends, I can say hand on heart I have never been happier in my life.

    Morning,

My hands are so cold, that I can only just about type - why are churches so bloomin cold! Only the thought of another all you can eat for £6.50 at the local Chinese at lunchtime is keeping me going (yes that is the second time this week!)

Chris, Heard you this morning and like everyone I had tears in my eyes. They actually started when I heard the trailer for next Wednesday's Jeremy Vine show with the troops - I really can't listen to that or I might never make it to the O2 or if I did I would have very red eyes and that wouldn't be attractive.

Obamarama - Yippee - looking forward to meeting you.

Advent Calendar guess (now I can't actually remember what we've already have - JG???) a snow flake.

Right, back to sorting out the church rota for next year, which is very difficult when only a handful of people volunteer - grrrrrr

Well now. Whose bright idea was it to play My Way.

    Am in bits.

Was all ready to go when that came on; had to sit down with the DDF Eric's fingers gently drumming to the rhythm on the back of me hand, as they always did to his beloved Frank Tomato.

I don't think I can listen tomorrow if 'e keeps THAT up. If 'e plays Stranglers In The Night I'll lose every drop a moisture in me body.

    Morning all,

Father Christmas and his protege on sparkling form this morning . . .
The Togmeister, through all the nonsense, has the radiance and warmth that you cannot buy - I did hear a calmness in Chris this morning we rarely hear in the evenings, as well - must be definately infectious in that studio . . .
    All good,

    Happy birthday Dan,

I too noticed a calmer tone to Chris.
He's going to fit in just fine.

I feel slightly guilty, I just got Chris Moykes to write three very offensive messages in three of his own books. All made out to friends and a relative as Christmas presents.
The guilt comes from knowing that as soon as Chris starts - they'll be making the leap that we all had to once and re-tuning to R2!
As will a lot of people in their late 20's I reckon.
In fairness though. He is a lovely bloke.

Was there with you all this morning!

Ali, the trailer for Jeremy Vine forces show, well I am welling up just thinking about it. I will be on the train next week when that is on. I may listen again or I may just send my thoughts, prayers and another shoe box full of goodies out to the boys & girls. Not sure I can listen in my tearful state!

If anyone had seen me driving along this morning listening to Sir Tel & Chris, they'd have wondered why i had such a huge grin across my face.

There was so much happiness & love in that studio this morning, spreading across all of us. Bet Noah got very spoit too!

    Morning all.

Thanks for the advice on the Pot Noodle front, however a change of plan means that I won't have time to get to Tesco anyway (other supermarkets are also available) - it's going to have to be the Admiral's pie I found in the freezer.

Decided I'm not going to listen to Terry's programme tomorrow for safety reasons. This morning was bad enough, but if it's anything like I think it's going to be, I suspect I'll have diffculty seeing during my drive to work... Might be a job for the iPlayer, or better still I might record it on the Freeview recorder and keep it for posterity...

Better go - just got an email entitled `How to Stop your Cyber Slackers - IT Manager's Guide to Internet Abuse'. If our IT manager gets the same email, this might well be my last ever post.... :-)

  • Comment number 31.

    Morning all,

Can't believe it's the Togmeister's last show ever tomorrow! Seems like only yesterday he was breaking the news that he was calling it a day. Just wondering if the bosses at work would mind if I'm a little late in tomorrow so I can listen right to the end? Loved CLP's message for Tel, I think lots of people out there in Radio 2-land would echo those sentiments.

Having a fairly chilled out day today, although all hopes of a lie in were scuppered by one phone call yesterday from the heating ompany saying could we come and do the safety check on the boiler, today being the only day I was free for them to come, grr! It's our Christmas party tonight so hairdresser is booked for later this afternoon!

No snow here in Edinburgh, just rain, sleet, and now hail!! Stay safe anyone who has to go out driving in the white stuff

The only bloomin' day we could've done with them charging through the door to use me as their trampoline eh?
Made it to the classroom with seconds to spare bless him and never actually got the radio on for some reason????
Sounds like I missed a corker too :(

So, snow is en-route to us tonight, how cool, as long as it doesn't affect the train line next Weds it's welcome!

Just a quick hello to everyone to say I haven't forgotten about you all but have had no interweb for over 4 weeks now so feel very lost though not alone... baby Daniel is more than enough company.

Daniel update- after the scare of a few weeks back he's starting to tuen a corner and the hours of screaming and squealing in pain with the acid reflux has gone from up to 7 hours ata time to 2-3 which I can cope with. I'm still watching him as he sleeps though. He's now a whopping 10lb 10oz of pure joy and he laughs and smiles and watches things too.

If I struggle to get back on here before we sign off for the festive break then Happy Crimbo everyone! I'm trying to organise us for the 23rd at the mo but am not commiting just yet (baby health and all that) but I'll do my best.

I'm not too sure what the reception's like on the Nokia, but every time I've used one of those little FM radios where the earphones work as the aerial, it's not been good. It's always good to have a backup and you can get a decent FM pocket radio for about £10-£15 pounds*

Jo - Obama's technique for After Eight dunking is exemplary. However, I find it's important to select the drink to dunk into according to the item to be dunked - for After Eights, I'd go for a coffee or hot chocolate as the effects of `overdunking' are more acceptable than say for tea... :-)

  • Comment number 74.

After Eight dunkage is a resounding success, I chanced it with a single, non reinforced one and had a very pleasing chocolately/coffee experience

    :o)

  • Comment number 75.

I can highly recommend an Amaretto Latte if you're near that high street coffee chain that has the same name as a mad emporor!

Delish when enjoyed in good company.

Can I come in and play too?

    All this talk of Wogan got me thinking about my 'never have dones'. I'd class these as things that most folk would raise an eyebrow and say 'really?' when you say you have never done it. Why Wogan? See number one;

    1. Never listened to Wogan on the breakfast show. Don't know why, nothing against him, just never, ever done it.

    2. Never eaten a kebab. Being veggie for the past 20 years has obviously helped, but even in those 'dangerous years' - 16 to 18, when the joys of beer were discovered, I managed to avoid them.

    3. Never been to the Isle of Wight. It is even in a neighbouring county.

    4. Never seen Big Brother. Or The X Factor. Or any of the other Cowell-creations.

    5. Never ridden a horse. Got bitten by one while feeding it at playschool and we vowed to never cross each other's paths again. They still give me the evil-eye today.

    Peace + love

Yes, I'm confused too. Just enjoy!!

    Hi Matt,

    1. I have never been to the Isle of Wight either My parents went there on holiday once - the apartment contained a stereo system consisting of a car radio and speakers mounted in a wooden box, my father got done for speeding and the whole experience was so bad they came back a day early.

    2. I have never sung karaoke. If Charlotte Church has the voice on an angel, I have the voice of an angle grinder.

    3. I have never understood the concept of `extreme sports'. Who came up with the idea of jumping off a tower block attached to a piece of knicker elastic?

    4. I have never completed a Times crossword. Or started one.

    5. I have never appeared in a list of the world's sexiest men...

  • Comment number 81.

Rips, Are you stalking celebs AGAIN. You wont want to associate with mere mortals next week at the O2 at this rate.

    Dan, Happy Birthday

    Hope everyone is well.

    Hi Troops:

Right, that's 80 golf calendars and 40 Scottish Scenes calendars off the premises! Nightmare job, to say the least! But we must keep the clients happy ....

Dunking: not my thing at all, but I do enjoy an After Eight or two with a glass of milk!

I am out tonight to see my lovely friend appearing in Panto - she is training to be a drama teacher but it turns out she is a fantastic actress. She graduates in the summer and hopes to then get acting work. I am hoping for big things for her .... she's promised to take me to the the Oscars when she is nominated!

    Hi all

    Happy Birthday Dan!

I'm going to start stalking Rips, so I get to meet some celebs!!

    Ahh, lists....well done Matt

    1) I've been to the Isle of Wight, and we got chased by a goat! My Nan hit it over the head with her handbag until it gave up and went away. I've not been back!

    2) I've never eaten a kebab either (well only a mushroom one)

    3) I've never been to Paris, but I'm going soon, but I've no intentions of going up the Eiffel Tower!

    4) I've never eaten Oysters, even though I was in Galway when the festival was on

    5) I've never sung karaoke and no-one would want me to either

    Happy Birthday Dan.
I have Sky+ radio programs before and have Terry's last show set up for tomorrow, as well as Chris' for next Wednesday. It's in Services I think, and then manual recording - just make sure you set the a.m./p.m. bit right!
Cheryl - I will stick to my guess of mistletoe for the calendar, on the same basis as Pen. Mind you, I have had the same lottery numbers for the last 5 years and won about £10!

Well a successful morning, all presents wrapped, huge steak and carrot pie made for tonight, kitchen floor scrubbed and wabbits beds changed!

All done to the Wogan breakfast show. Anyone who missed it, do try and listen to it.

    Rips stalking??

I like to think of him as our 'Roving Reporter.'

Its the most beautiful sunny day here, but the wind is blowing from the Brizzle side, so anything you get Debs,I am sure to get later.

Nearly time to go to work now.

    No rest eh!!
