Oh What A Night
So the book launch for It's Not What You Think was not what I thought !
I "thought" I was ready for it but I couldn't have been more wrong.
You see, all these very decent and hugely talented people turned up to support me. As I looked around at them, it was like looking back at my life, each of them having added substantially to my existence in their own unique way. I suddenly became overwhelmed by the situation. I still am.
It made me realise our lives are mostly about the people in them. Something so obvious I suppose but never as clear to me as in the last twenty four hours..
I thank the people in my mine greatly. There is no doubt about it I am the luckiest bugger I know.
Have the best weekend ever - go on, I dare you.
X.

Just to add, I myself am not given to the aul eyes bein' too close to the bladder if yous get me drift; I can't remember the last time I cried with frustration or self-pity. But get me near any acts of kindness, or an aul bid telling me a story of hardship in the old days, and off I go.
And I don't think I'll ever live down the GD's 18th. birthday party, when I'd invited everybody who had ever been instrumental in the happy life of said Top Bird. And they all turned up. I had a marvellous speech all lined up, as you can imagine, taking a total rise out of her, dredging up all sorts of embarrassing incidents (and there are a fair few), and finished up with, "But, seriously;.." and looked around at all these people, happy and laughing, all of whom had been there to support us both during what had been some rocky times, all with glasses charged to toast the daughter of whom, as you all know, I'm unfeasibly proud,... and burst into tears.
I'm fillin' up again. Ah jayzus after all these years..
Gratitude is a powerful emotion.

Pirate party, Ads? Ah I'm in a mad jealous rage.
As for the jibberin' wreck, hahaha, v. funny, you've just reminded me of a conversation I had with the GD over a Thai curry yesterday.
We were discussing a young man we know who I insisted was one of twins, she wasn't so sure, thought I had him mixed up with someone else.
"But he IS, sweetie, listen, I saw him at the wedding a few weeks back; he has an identical twin."
"Mother," says she, sceptically, "It's a well-known fact that after a glass a shampoo and a vodka tonic, YOU think EVERYbody has an identical twin."
Well it made me laff.

It's also not as far away as he planned, as he felt he couldn't commit me to something he knew I wouldn't want to do...so he told me and I veto'd it...New York!
1) Cos it's more than the loose change can afford
2) Cos it'll be freezing and probably snowy in February
3) Cos of the travelling time and jetlag issues
So the place we are going is closer, but still involves a flight (grrr!)

And although it's a shame you wouldn't do New York, my favourite place on earth, you're quite right. It would freeze your lallys off in February. I've done it a couple times in Jan and Feb; only this year as it happens, and although I found myself watching Barack O'Bama's (he's Irish you know) inauguration on the big screens in Times Square, utterly fabulous, I thought I'd got gangrene in the end a me nose from the permanently frozen dewdrop. That January New York wind has razor-blades in it. And I once walked through the snow a few blocks up to Macy's, ill-advisedly wearing mascara. Talk about Snowflakes That Stay On My Nose And Eyelashes, by the time I'd been in the store a few minutes I'd turned into Alice Cooper's Granny.
And the jet-lag, I swear it's mostly a state of mind. If you get a night flight back and grab a couple hours sleep, followed by early to bed the next night, bingo.
It's the blisters from the shoppin' that floor yous.
No, best time for NYC is April, when it's warmer but you're still not at peak time, or after Thanksgiving, when they get bang into The Holidays, or Christmas to you and me. So pretty.

Deevs, think True Blood not for boys. Twilight is High School Vampire Romance!!!! Have just read Boy1's to see what it's all about. Love the fact that vampire (really aged 98 but still looks 17 & gorgeous) says he will not take physical relationship further because, as a vamp, he is so strong, he might hurt her! So is all going to stay very innocent I think. Ideal for 13 yr old types. Bit like High School Musical (if you've had that pleasure) but with non human-blood sucking vampires!
Oh and no songs!

Safe journey over, having done that journey many a time too, I know that they only cancel the Swift if absolutely necessary and the big one will be dropping it's stabilisers.
And....why are the snacks in Club on the swift better than those on the big boat? Not that you'll be going for snacks.
Look out for Jellyfish (thousands of'em) and dolphins when you hit the other side. I've seen both, and there's nothing worse than looking across to say did you see that, and realising that not only didn't they, but they aren't interested anyway....lonely old experience that!

Annie - don't take it personally.
Whilst we would welcome any member of our family round any day of the week without invite.
My sister has a massively open house and regular dates with grandad for saturday lunch, sunday lunch and sunday dinner.
My nephew's and neice spend so much time with grandada that it's become a chore.
We always make arrangements which I know upsets some of my family in the 'who do they think they are type of way' but it means so much more as we work towards it.
That's not say that no-one is welcome - every one is. We just want to enjoy it aswell!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the snacks, ah yes I'm all for a snack and indeed they are better than some of the stuff I see people tuckin' into on the big boat. Plus, and I'm not averse to paying for meals but the price of a plate of something unidentifiable is exhorbitant.
Actually, I usually go Club Class to get away from the hoardes of kids. I can't believe how utterly unaware or unconcerned some people are about the behaviour of their children, I swear one day there'll be fisticuffs between meself and some parent or other, I can't bear it.

Annie, bless you nonetheless. I wish my own family had had the sensitivity you have when the GD was tiny; they meant no harm and I don't blame them, but there was just ALways one or other of them around, and it didn't help my state of mind as I felt overwhelmed and exhausted; plus I became increasingly frustrated and angry with the ex-hubby as I felt he should have put his foot down. Clodagh - I always stretch myself to Club - as you know for £10 you get priority boarding, free ham sandwiches, coffee, fruit fizzy drinks and quiet reclining seats. JUST £10.....WHO WOULDN'T?
As for the children - I have to hold back. We have children who think that going to a restaurant is fairly normal, as is sitting on your seat for the whole of the meal and joining in with every one.
I have a lot of friends who think there is nothing cuter than little Johnny wandering around the restaurant shouting and chatting to the people who went there to enjoy themselves.
The best one I ever heard was when a waiter asked "would you like a high chair" (for their 18month old) and the dad replied......No, he won't sit in a high chair??????!!!!!!

I SO agree with you, Rips.
And I blame MacHooligan's. Is it any wonder children have no idea how to behave when we actively encourage them to eat s***e with their fingers whilst runnin' round like maniacs and roarin' fit to bust? I mean, of COURSE I took the GD there on occasion, when it would have been terse of me to refuse. But I HATED it, and also used to take her to proper restaurants where she used to learn how to behave and eat properly. I could never, for shame, have let her run wild in a restaurant, cinema, whatever; it would have been ME that would have reflected badly upon, and I would have done her no favours if I had neglected to teach her good manners. That's basically the root of everything. Respect and good manners, and both have to be nurtured.

Not sure what this 'spirit of the blog' is meant to be and who decided on it, perhaps someone could enlighten me.
Lastly there's no point getting in a row with someone and then reaching for the moderator button, apart from anything else it spoils the fun for the rest of us. If you can't take it don't dish it out!

No call from Scout camp so they must all be in one piece. We'll see what state they're in when we pick them up tomorrow.
Been to Cambridge today. Haven't been there for years. It was so busy though. Got fed up with being bashed by people not looking where they were going so we went & had a lovely meal instead.
Now ready for nice cheese & bread we bought earlier, glass of wine & Strictly in peace.

Brothers and sisters
Being in a reflective mood - you need to make time to be, not easy these days - I can happily confirm that life currently ain't so bad in Rudgwick Towers.
The veggie chili is simmering away on the stove, Mrs MfR is whooping away downstairs while watching her beloved 'Strictly thingy', and I am supping a rather lovely strong English cider while hammering away at the keyboard pouring my thoughts out to you lot.
It's OK, isn't it?
Now, I wanted to pen some Road Trip tales, but you have to be in the right frame of mind, and right now, frankly, I can't be bothered. No offense meant - just right now my brain is frazzled after a pretty heavy week in the office. You know, post-holiday etc.
One thing I will say though, is that right now is a fabulous time to hit Vegas if it is your thing, or if you've never been and fancy giving it a whirl. The bottom line is that the place is suffering. Not that anyone there will admit it. We have been there, ahem, 'once or twice' - well, eight or nine times, actually - and we've never seen it so quiet. Sure, there are peaks and troughs during the year, but it was spookily empty. Talking to people in hotels and cabs though, the line was 'hey!, never been busier!'. Their kidding no-one though, and if you want to drop in on Sin City, you will get the bargain of a lifetime as hotel rates are on the floor. There is still of terrific amount of entertainment in town, and plenty of high class dining to be had too, not to mention my old favourites of Red Rock Canyon and of course, the Grand Canyon, albeit you'll be whisked to the busy South Rim and not the tranquil North Rim that we were lucky enough to experience on our Road Trip.
Remember the MfR Rule No. 1 for Las Vegas though - Three or four days are plenty, any more, and you will go mad.
Now, my reflective mood also means I am up for a list. I love a list, you may have gathered that, so here goes;
The Best Bands In The World - Ever.
Ooh, bound to touch a nerve! Roll 'em out.
1. The Rolling Stones. Pre-80s, of course.
2. The Beatles. Knocked it on the head at just the right time John. Or Paul. Or whoever actually pushed the button.
3. Led Zeppelin. Before they made a bucket load of cash and some fairly rubbish, bloated prog-nonsense.
4. U2. Before they started making albums that were essentially the same as the last one, but with a different cover. And different sunglasses for Bono.
5. The Smiths. Thought that would wake you up. Yes, really. If you don't believe me, go and lie down in a darkened room, pop your cans on, and listen to The Queen Is Dead from start to finish. There, it all makes sense now, doesn't it?
6. Queen. No, only joking.
I think my chili needs attending to now, so I will love you and leave you. Have a wonderful weekend friends. Keep away from bad people.
Peace + love
MfR
PS I don't know if you have seen, but archaeologists have discovered a mini-Stonehenge a mile from the site of Wiltshire's famous stone circle. Nigel, a tourist visiting the area, was quoted as saying 'In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, an ancient race of people...the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing...
Goes up to eleven, apparently.

We generally sort ourselves out - find a flight, book a few hotels etc, but this time it was a combination. We had some points to use with Mr. Branson's airline, so we booked the flights to LA, but I used Trailfinders to build the rest this time, and it worked out pretty well. In fact, I'd go as far as to recommend Steve in the Brighton office - genius!
BM - you saw the Stones in the early days?! Jealous, moi?
I caught them at Wembley on one the huge tours back in the early 90s, and whilst good, I would loved to have seen them in the early 60s in an intimate environment, with Brian. Alas, born a tad too late.

Hello just dropping in to say hi!
Feeling a wee bit weary tonight, survived the drive from Edinburgh to Liverpool, through heay rain and spray, high winds, and the added annoyance of divers hogging the middle lane of the motorway...grrrrr!!!! Don't understand why people insist on staying in that lane when there's nothing to be seen in lane 1, and, to make matters worse they trundle along at 65mph!!!!! Anyhow an early night beckons tonight,as Mum and I are on the early flight out of John Lennon airport to Barcelona.
Great blog Matt,as always, would love to see more of the US, and it's a country that really does cry out for a road trip. One day hopefully...

No bears on this trip. They are pretty few and far between in Utah and Arizona. There are mountain lions in Zion, but they kept themselves to themselves too.
My only two bear experiences were both in Canada. I was driving through Alberta one time and a black bear run across the road in front of my beaten up old 72 Chevy Malibu Classic - and I still have the number plate on my bookcase - and another time I was driving with a friend through BC and we saw a couple of cars parked up by the side of the road with their lights on. We stopped, and it turned out that there was a river running close to the road and they were watching a grizzly on a sandbank catching fish. We must have spent an hour there watching this amazing sight only a hundred yards from us. Some moments are meant to be treasured, and this was one of mine.
We are hoping to hit Alaska next. Plenty of bear action to be had there!

I thank my lucky stars every day that I am the lucky boy that I am. I am able to live a few of my dreams, but I also feel pain and hit the lows that so many of us do.
My only life advice is grab it by the scruff of the neck and, whilst not being daft, live it while you can.
I had a yearning to hit the US from a very early age, and I remember vividly the first time I actually set foot there - Seattle, Washington, 1989. Turned out there was more to it. As I have written here before, my blood is part American, although I didn't know it until 1995.
I maybe turning into an old hippie - aged 39, but I believe that there was some kind of magic drawing me across the Atlantic all along.

You lucky, lucky person.
The Jimster popped his clogs 9 days after I was born, so I was pretty unlikely to hop out of the pram and catch him before his final journey. As I mentioned earlier this year, my mum and dad had tickets to the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, but my arrival meant they couldn't attend, so I buggered it up for them too.
But I made amends this year when I took my mum to see her hero, Leonard Cohen, who was also at IOW 1970. See, Karma.
I am so jealous though that you actually saw him live. There is so little really good stuff around these days - I mean stuff that will be revered in 50 years time - so those moments are so precious. When we went to see Laughing Len back in July, my mum told us the story about the time she saw The Beatles live. I was, and still am, in awe.
Billie - we are off to see Green Day next month. Not Hendrix, The Stones, or The Beatles, but a pretty damn good band, nonetheless. My message to you is see your heroes when you can. If you don't believe me, re-read mine and Beezer's posts above.
Peace + love

Evening
Just popping in, as probably heading off to bed shortly, although really want to watch MOTD, if I can stay awake.
Had to watch Strictly on delay as Mr JG watching the rugby, so needed to keep away from here...wasn't Andy Williams awful!
Billie, you really must go to a concert! Most bands sound so much better live.
Looking forward to the F1 tomorrow, should be an interesting race - predict at least 3 safety car periods!

Hi Bridge and MC and JG think you could be so right about safety car but have failed to watch much of the season as F1 not what it used to be. To say we were massive fans once was a bit of an understatement.

Watch the Jonathon Ross - Barbra Steisand interview last night. Why can't he do interviews like that more often? It was a pleasure to warch. His wit and intelligence came through along with, dare I say, a little humility. Hi did himself credit. Wonder how long it took him to convince the BBC to let him loose on Babs tho?

Hellooo out there.
I'm back safely but my nerves are still in tatters from yesterday's journey!
Started off at 9am....met Dissing and Deevs at 3pm!!!!
Up to the outskirts of Norwich, fine, no problems.
Sybil sat-nav kept giving me polite instructions and after checking with the printed AA routefinder instructions on the passenger seat (belt and braces girl, me!) I duly turned left or right.
Text from Deev at 1pm "am in room text me when you get here" I was 12 miles from Norwich at this point .....2 flippin hours it took me to actually get there and get into my room!!
I went 'round the flippin city centre that many times it was like Groundhog Day.
Sybil stopped telling me politely to turn right and began screeching ...DO A U-TURN ...DO A F...ING U-TURN!!!
And don't get me started the the Kamikaze shoppers who kept chucking themselves in front of the car or the chuffin buses which don't indicate and seem to breed, coz every bally circuit of the one-way system there seemed to be more of them!!!
And they were from at least 3 different companies and all practically empty!
Plus Norwich were playing at home so the lobotomised supporters were meandering like sheep (and I know, living in these parts how they wander) all over the roads.
In the end, I pulled up on double yellow lines and tooted my horn at some of Kirk's colleagues, who were 'on-duty' to prevent football high-spirits getting out of hand and practically wept the words "how do I get into the carpark of that hotel there" coz I COULD SEE IT, JUST NOT GET TO IT!
After a final u-turn, I was there.
Never has a G&T been more welcome .....!
Phew, and breathe.
Crumpy xx still smiling, though :o)

Just need to sort out some pics to go on the new digital photo frame & I can do that without moving.
Sounds like Norwich possee had a jolly old time. I know what Crupmy means about the one-way system. I've decided the only way to travel around Norwich is to join the people on the buses & use the park n ride. Not much help if you need to stay overnight though.

Hello Everybody
Thanks Annie, Would 've forgotten Doc Marten if you hadn't said.
Our channels still not set right but Mr Seza says it's all sorted so who am I to argue!
I've got at admit, have read quite a lot of The Book -am a quick reader, sorry. Am really enjoying it. Thinks it's safe to say Mr Evans has learnt a lot over the years.
Haven't got into X factor at all, any one worth watching?

Just a thought.
CLP may be on his book tour, but he's not gone on holiday so maybe, just maybe, we might get the odd blog from The Big Fella Himself this week ....
Just a thought ....?

I wondered that, Deevs. Technically he's still working this week so.....
Mind you, if he's going to tell tales of his signings and there are bloggers going, is this a good idea?

Must say however - Crumpy - I am soooooooo sorry - All Mr B's fault - I should have been driving you to Norwich and at least we would have had a laugh getting lost together like I did in Brizz. Nice industrial estates btw Brizz - and closed roads thanks to half marathon!!!!

Awwww y'know Seza .....
Go to work, bit of Facebooking, bit of blogging, a few texts, a few emails - probably to/from bloggers (demanding bunch!!!), squeeze in a bit more Facebooking, check my Hotmail, play some music, bit of Goth dancing round the office, check the blog, drink some coffee, bit more dancing, may re-pimp me desk (not done that since Friday!) ..... and even possibly (drum roll please ....) a bit of WORK!
;-)
