Today they say is the naturally...

Chris Evans | 11:08 UK time, Friday, 19 June 2009

...happiest day of the year.

I would tell you why they say this, but my mate has just wiped a bogey on that bit of the newspaper and I had to throw it away as it was making me chunder. It's in the Daily Mail if you want to read about it. I'll have another scan of the skinny when I get to work.

Same mate is feeling a bit down on this the happiest of days, 'cos of his belly. I have told him just looking at it won't change anything, so have forced him to have a work out with me before I leave for the mighty Radio 2 this afternoon

Stephen Fry has dropped six stones in a year, and this has inspired him finally to face up to the fat..

So here he is eighteen months ago ...

before.jpg

And here he is now...

after.jpg

The rest of the world may be worried about the implosion of F1 and dodgy elections in Iran, but I have adipose to get rid of. I am saying 12 10 for me and 13 2 for the moustache - two weeks today - so we look swell as opposed to swollen for our trip down to The New Forest.

Happiest day of the year, really?

So the happiest day is official because of research done by Walls ice cream! Mmmm call me cynical if you like but the formula used to find this out was O + (N x S) + Cpm/T + He. Now what on earth does that mean?

To me it is a bit like having Valentines Day, Fathers day, Mothers Day and the like. Not that I am against them all in principle but it seems to me that these days are usually looking to sell something and it is just a marketing tool. Should we not be happy all of the time or love our parents and partners without someone telling us that we have to be happy or say I love you?

So in protest today I will not buy a Walls Ice cream (although I have to admit to wanting one really badly now I think of them.....) never mind how hot it gets. However I will tell my wife I love her when I get home.....with a smile on my face.....just because I can. ;-))

Now then the Fat thing. Getting rid of superfluous fat is rather like de-cluttering the house. A little fat belly can be a sign of something else you're hanging on to.

Therefore I always find that de-cluttering my life is the best way to restore equilibrium to me head, and the ickle body follows. When you're relaxed and at peace with yourself, you actually don't need to stuff your face beyond its needs. Of course, we all carry a bit of extraneous fat. If the old bottom didn't have any fat on it we'd split when we sat down. And that'd make a right nasty mess on the sofa, n'est-ce pas.

We need to take care, sure. Especially as we get a bit older. But what we need to stop doing is being so bloody perfectionist about it. This is where I cite certain areas of the media as having great accountability, but of course we have free will as individuals. What we CAN do is inspire our youngsters with a healthy dose of self-respect, teach them to be happy and to pass it on.

    It's a start.

Meanwhile Christoff, give your mate a poke in his lovely little wibbly-wobbly belly from me and tell him he's a God.

But pass him a hanky for goodness' sake. Ew.

If you arrived at the house with his Prezzy later than 9.30 you'd find him sat sittin' on the doorstep with his arms folded, obviously having behaved like a bad-tempered budgie with the plastic cover on its cage for at least 2 hours.

But the joy of giving him said Prezzy was second to none. He adored the attention, see. He'd mince around in what was invariably a new sweater or shirt, thinkin' he was chocolate and loving himself. And it was infectious. It didn't matter if he looked a bugger, he simply loved all the fuss, bless him. Ergo it gave us all the more pleasure.

Good job, really. Because being dragged out the scratcher of a Sunday morning to answer the phone to "'Urry up, you'll 'ave it dark.." .. you passionately wanted to smash his face in.

    Yup, I'm back.

Well I didn't really go away, just paused for thought.

I have dipped in now and then, but I haven't really paid attention to what has been going on, so once I have finished this glass of rather zingy NZ sauvignon blanc, I'll go and stand in the corner, facing the wall, for the rest of the lesson.

If that is OK with you?

I have been clawing my way back to fitness - both physically, and otherwise - and it is all going rather well. The new gym is awesome, Chris wouldn't know the place if he ever stumbled across it again, so much so that we both want to go there at every available opportunity, which is handy if you are trying to shed a couple of pounds and tone up a little.

Road Trip plans are going well - the desert is edging ever closer - and next week sees us heading to the big smoke on Thursday for two days of rock nirvana, while holed up in our Japanese-styley bolthole.

    Sometimes life ain't so bad.

    Be happy, dear friends.

Good to hear from you too.

I feel a bit like a traitor when I don't pop in every day, but sometimes life dictates otherwise. I guess that is the beauty of the place - as we have said before, it is like the local pub. If you don't go for a week it doesn't matter, because the same, friendly faces will still be there to greet you when you do come back.

I did apply, but apart from an acknowledgment, nothing yet. It is a huge departure from what I do now - I'd love to tell you what it is, but I don't want to tempt fate - so I am not getting my hopes up too much, but I'll keep you posted.

What curry did you go for?

I ask, as whilst Indian food is pretty veggie-safe, I have a very short list of places that do seriously good veggie curries.

In fact, the list is two lines long.

    1. Monsoon in Billingshurst. 5 miles up the road and top drawer. When Robbie was living nearby, this was his curry of choice.

    2. Benares, Mayfair. OK, slightly different kettle of fish, but this place is stunning on every level. Arise, Sir Kochhar.

Mind you, I'm guessing that your place won't deliver to West Sussex?

Deev - loving the idea of a christmas blog meet - just rememver its my birthday on the 23rd - no gate crashing that!!

Spent the rest of the day yesterday moving furniture at my mates work adn walking around London - never made the British museam after all but I figured it was too nice to be indoors and its not going anyway

Came home happy and had lovely evening with Mr bp and didnt think about work once - now got a father packed weekend to enjoy.

Porn name - always a difficult one as I have two mums (long story but makes application forms difficult) so will so it the alternative way of pets name and first street name - which makes me either

    minty ledwich or zilog ledwich

100 bonus points for anyone who knows what a zilog is without googling it!

    Now then Rips.

Belfast to Cork. If they time it right they will do it in 4. But remind 'em take the euro coins for the tolls and register for the e-toll on the M50, because if they call that premium rate number to pay the 2 euro it will cost 'em 30 quid by the time they've got through to somebody from Bratislava mis-hearing their credit card details. Oh yes, and you can't pay by debit card. They don't point that out till you've made at least 3 calls and are growlin' and droolin' and makin' dribbly nose-prints on the window. I should take the said M50 mind you; NOT at rush-hour as it's like a small, tightly compacted M25 but with tractors, and they'll end up with severe gangrene in their buttocks by the time they reach Cork.

And I am reminded of the message I received from the kindly and sensitive brother-outlaw as I morphed slowly up the M7 through Co. Kildare. "What you up to?"

"Well now," says I. "Am stuck on the Burma Railway that is the rush hour in Ireland, behind an elephant-train of horse-boxes. Have been starin' at a horse's bottom for 50 minutes."

As I hit Send, I knew what the reply would be. Sure enough,

"It must be like looking in a mirror. XB."

    Bless him.

Anyway best go scrub up, am meetin' the GD in Wigan shortly, she wants me to ride shotgun while she gets her hair cut.

    Laters.

One for the purists, I fancy.

In a week that sees us bowing before the rock gods that are Chickenfoot and The Killers, I got to thinking about guitars.

See, I do that. Think about stuff. But in this case, I got beyond the slabs of wood sprinkled with frets and pickups, and got right to the nub of it.

    Solos.

Yup. The best bit in a rock song. Right between the second chorus and the extended widdly bit before everything comes crashing to the end.

So, where do we go to find the best ones?

    Loads to choose from. You can take your Erics, your Slashes, your Eddies and your Anguses, but here are my top three, in no particular order;

Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour. Bask in the beautiful, haunting notes that he takes us through in this awesome song. You almost want this to go on forever.

Stairway to Heaven - Jimmy Page. The one that wrote the rulebook. And then tore it up again. A nod to Bonzo's drumming, but this is Jimmy's finest moment. Enjoy.

Big Trouble - Steve Vai. What? Never heard of it? Who? OK. Sit down. There are three legends of guitar who took the 'metal' route. Eddie Van Halen - who basically invented the guitar style we hear today - Joe Satriani, who now forms part of Chickenfoot (see above) and his pupil - Steve Vai. He made his name with David Lee Roth, of Van Halen fame, and this track was on Diamond Dave's first solo album. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

    Loving your work.

Rips..glad that there is someone else that enjoys the talent that is the Cohen.

Crumps..see that you are near to Wrecsam..does the phrase ..live in Hope die in Caergwrle mean anything to you or are you from a different region ??

    Question time then...

How far would you travel to get a better takeaway ?

Tomorrow, I am going to do a 78 mile round trip for a curry.

    Morning folks,

    This one is for MfR.

I used to attend an annual gig at NEC called G3. It was held for 3 years running and was completley excellent. Basically it involved 3 rather proficient guitarists, 2 of whom were Vai and Satriani. The third was different each year, and I can only really remember Stu Hamm because the name reminded me of dinner.
Needless to say the talent on display was inspiring and now I can play the first bar of Under the Bridge, and the opening to La Villa Strangiato.

Talking of La Villa you appear to have missed Mr Lifeson off your list, but I'll forgive you...

I'm back! With coffee. in pyjamas. Watching bike racing on Eurosport.

    Magic.

    As was Romeo & Juliet.

The Globe is a beautiful place in broad daylight. By night, it became an amazing theatre, an eerily haunting atmosphere as the players depict Will's works as they were meant to be seen. No microphones, so natural voice projection, no amplified orchestra pit, just lutes and pipes and hand drums, beautiful harmonies and an amazing story.

    Really, really enjoyed it.

Also took in my beloved Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, a walk from the Millennium Bridge to Tower Bridge and back again, and the amazing spectacle of the South Bank by night.

I wish you'd all been there with me.

And my good deed for the day .... as we were about to walk over the Millennium Bridge for the first time of the day (daylight, 4pm ish) a lady with a very heavy Welsh accent (think Crumpy!) asked if she could walk overthe bridge with us as she had a bridge phobia (bit of a problem in London, that!). So, slowly, between Me and Mr Deevs, she took my arm and we walked over the not-so-wobbly-now bridge together, I talked to her about London, what she was doing during her stay, why she had a fear of bridges etc and before we knew it, we were over the bridge and she was eternally thankful!

So, call the Karma Police ...... it felt good!

Off to FB to see if any of you love me!

    Tonight ..... BLUR!!!!!

Ello Ter CLP And ALL Bloggies......

    Bingo Star ere.....

In the words of Murray Walker...... "GO, GO, GO, GO, GOOOOWWWWWW!!!!@@!!@@@!!!!!!!!!@!"

Yes only a few 'ours until our GP iz go, go, go!!!!!!!!!!

Just banging on me British GP prediction....... So this iz the BIG one of the year!!!!
F1 MADNESS..... Apart from all the maddness going in F1 politics at present, seems everything in this modern world... 'as gone a little.... errr unbalanced..... abit mad!!!!!
The wheels are falling off the world bit by bit...... and now, sorry now, it's F1's turn ter ave the wheels fall off.... literally!!!!!!
Am mean iz the GO gonna be at Silverstone next year or Donnington Park!!!! Will there be F1 next year or two separate championships..... ahhhhhhhh the world 'as gone....... MAD!

    Ok.... onter this weekend's race!!!!!
TV COVERAGE..... Firstly very much enjoying the BBC's coverage of there GP.... 'atcleechna!!!' in russian!!!!! (Excellent).
And nice ter David Coulthard and INDEED Eddie Jordan noot coming ter punches.... they seem ter ave agreed ter disagree without disagreeing too much and agreeing more than they used ter agree!!!!
PS A see Eddie sporting a good tan..... must be aving alotta good weather in Ireland of late!!!!!
Also brilliant rer see 'Our Nige' aka Nigel Mansell and INDEED 'Walker The Talker' aka Murray Walker making an appearance on the Beeb's qualifying coverage!!! A tell yer brings back BIG memories of the dee's when F1 waz at it's best!!!!!!
There waz always a chemistry/ banter between Nige and Murray with Murray Walker's commentary absolutely brilliant... NEVER be another like 'im!!!!!
Then Mansell's driving waz AWESOME..... and watching 'im compete against the greatest ever racing driver aka Ayrton Senna and often beat 'im.... sometimes literally outide the car (yes they 'ad the odd mini punch up)...... MAN were those the dee's!!!!!!
A tell yer.... what's wrong with the world terdee..... there turning uz all inter personalityless robots!!!!!
Nigel waz talkin' about the time at the British GP where 'e came outta of 'is last pit stop in second place 23 seconds behind Nelson Piquet and unbelievably chipped away at a second a lap.... gaining, gaining.... gaaaaaining..... until 3 laps from the end 'e caught 'is team mate and just without terdee's timidness of most of the drivers..... blasted up Nelson's inside at 205mph!!!!!!!!!!
They toughed wheels briefly and PAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was 'Our Nige'!!!!!!!
The outcome..... 'e won the British GP with just 3 laps ter spare..... ONE OF THE BEST DRIVES EVER!!!!!
If that waz terdee.... 'e'd be probally be brought before the stewards and given a ten second penalty for 'too aggreeeessive/ progreeeesive overtaking' and thus the British winner of the British GP.... would no longer be..... errr British!!!!!!
But a man with a very British name aka 'Nelson' but who's actually.... errrr Brazilian!!!!!!!!
World's going more mad by the dee all!!!!!!!!!!!

THE DRIVERS.... It's easy for me ter say now that qualifying 'as passed but a goot a strong feeling about Vettel doing well this weekend!!!! Unlike Monaco where a thought Vettel would be punished by the barriers and 'is youthful over exuberance, Silverstone is a circuit with plenty of room for error!!!!
On top of this.. Silverstone it's a 'igh speed circuit which will suit the cars with the more powerful engines such as Vettel's Red Bull and Mark Webber's!!!! So a circuit that will suit Vettel aloot!!!
Very suprising ter see Ferrari struggle so much az they ave very good engines!!!! But despite Vettel gaining pole a don't think 'e will win!!!!

THE RACE RESULTS..... My race result prediction iz Button first, Vettel second and Webber third!!!!!
Az for Barrichello..... 'e will be strong but 'e gets too angry behind the wheel.... that's always been 'is big flaw..... a nice man outta the cockpit but ANGRY..... too ANGRY inside!!!! And after Turkey..... a think 'e will noot ave fully chilled..... so will either blow up 'is engine... or collide with someone!!!!!
    Nice bloke though iz Rubens!!!!
Good ter see Nakajima qualifiying in 4th!!!! 'opefully Naka won't knacker it up in the race too much... a wreckon.... 6th place finish!!!!!

GIANCARLO FISICHELLA..... Az for Fisi..... a really, really, really getta VERY strong feeling 'e's gonna do well..... a can just sense it...... am going for Fisi in 11th!!!!! A might tell more why a think so on Mondee!!!! Let's see first if am correct!!!
A just 'ope Fisi doesn't get disheartened by the poor performance of the ForceIndia car and 'e doesn't retire from F1 this year!!!!
If a waz Fisi i'd stick it out.... and try ter keep driving in F1 until I waz 40!!!! Aka another 4 seasons!!!!
Driving til 40 would be a BIG achievement in itself and Fisi 'as of course iz of the most experienced F1 drivers.... after being only the 9th driver ever ter compete in over 200 GP's!!!!! Very impressive!!!!!
Competing ter 40 would make 'im the most experienced F1 driver ever!!!!
Incidently.... this weekend's GP iz Fisi's 222nd!!!!! YES!!!!! 222..... A VERY GOOD OMEN!!!!!!

LEWIS 'AMILTON..... Finally..... very sad ter see Lewis's McLaren such a bad, bad car ter drive..... who would ave though Fisi would out qualify Lewis in the British GP!!!!!!! MAD!!!!!
Lewis....... 'opefully 'e can ring the neck of that McLaren and getta top10.... won't be easy though!!!!!
A feel bad for Lewis..... just 'ope next year's McLaren iz gonna be better!!!!!
Mind you...... lookin' on the brightside.... still a mega achievement for anyone ter be driving in F1!!!!!!!!
i'd do anything ter be in Lewis's shoes..... my advice to Lewis.... just chill.... don't get down and 'e's still goot 15 years of F1 racing ahead...... so i'm sure 'e'll getta good car in the future ter win more championships...... that's if there iz an F1 in the future!!!!!

    GOURANGA..... F1!!!!!!!!
