CAUGHT BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE.

Chris Evans | 14:50 UK time, Thursday, 11 December 2008

Oh yes and no mistake, here's the deal...

... two of our team, i.e. Helen - the boss and Craig - the crackpot, are already in Cyprus, having flown there this morning to sort out tomorrow's ALL REQUEST FORCES SPESH.

Brilliant, can't wait and the rest of the team are staying here to handle things from this end.

But moi is all in between caught up in the middle like. I stay for tonight's show, fly out early in the morn and get there just in time for tomorrow night's show.

ALL GOOD....NO PROBLEM........ HOWEVER........ H O W E V E R !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the RADIO 2 staff party tonight. Like the big one, the Christmas Ding Dong, the once a year and that's it thing. Girls with glitter and no partners and a proper mobile disco.

Now, the cats already in Cyprus are gonna have a beer in sympathy, the dudes here are gonna party like there's no shows to do tomorrow, but I have to go home with not so much as a lime stuffed in the top of a bottle.

Of all the days in all of the year.

Course, the naughty little office imps are telling me to go the party anyway but I am saying:
"Get over yourselves St. Trinians, I've got a five hour flight with just me and a dusty old paperback, plus thirty degrees C and hundreds of squaddies waiting for a request at the other end."

Still, one wouldn't hurt, would it?

CLP.

2008.

The Problem: Having something important to do the next day makes it difficult to join the party with the same unchallenged abandon enjoyed by the other attendees.

What to do, Mr. Evans, what to do? Could go either way...

I have been on many a flight around our fair planet, hungover due to an inability to avoid the delightful excess of the night before and it is always painful. These days I tend to avoid that kind of pre-flight excess (next Wednesday is a classic example before my London flight...) but it can be tough...We've all been there.

    Either way, remember this:

CLP: re the Christmas party scenario I think you should go, even if you only have the one or two you can still have a laugh at everyone else's drunken antics. At the now infamous staff do 3 christmasses ago at my place of work there was one girl who couldn't drink (doctor's orders) and she dined out for about 3 days afterwards reminding (or informing) her colleagues just what they had got up to.... plus shs ehad no hangover to deal with the next day!

Debbie/Bondy: re the whole pictures of children's plays etc... I work at a tourist attraction here in Edinburgh and often lead education sessions for primary school aged children. if we want to take photos of any of the events we run we need to get advance permission from the parents of every single child in the group before we can take a single shot. It's a sad state of affairs but a reflection of the society we live in.

Anyhow on a cheerier note this year's Chrimbo bash is next week, still to decide what to wear... decisions, decisions

Ah jayzus I HATE that, I've sported more ridiculous hairdo's in me time than I can shake a stick at; in my time at Art College in Manchester in the 70s it was considered cool to trot off to Vidal Sassoon of a Tuesday night, students' training night, so that you got your hair done for free. Ergo meself and the marvellously bonkers (now incredibly successful artist) friend emerged with heads like summat you'd find at the end of Blackpool Pier.

Then I got married and became the only farmers' wife in the country with short blue hair and a plait at the back. I shall remember to my dying day the look on the father-in-law's (a burly, old-school farmer) face when he saw me.

"Did you 'ave gas?" He asked, lividly.

Then in the 80s came the sequence of dreadful curly perms. Oh yes. Vera Duckworth, Lily Savage, Marj Simpson and next-door's poodle/Jack Russell cross, a ringer for all of 'em I was. If I'd only known then what I know now, namely that my hair is actually naturally curly if I were ever to give it chance to grow before terrorising it, all them birds' nests coulda bin avoided.

These days, however, I wear my hair au naturel apart from slappin' the odd colour on it when it starts to look miserable, as I've had me share of psychotic hairdressers and therefore would rather face a firin' squad than one a them guys.

So. Top tip girls. If your hair goes green when you've emerged from the swimmin' pool lookin' more like Phyllis Diller than Ursula Andress, slap a bit a tomato ketchup on it.

    Oh yes.

One day in my 20's when I was going out with this guy who had a particular preference for blondes I thought I'd go the whole hog and change my colour. After vast amounts of peroxide applied by my hairdresser and goodness knows what else I looked in the mirror to see a wonderful mass of platinum blonde hair on what can only be described as the most ashen washed out face that ever took breath. I had that hair for 23 hrs before reverting to pleading for help from a hairdresser friend who advised that I had to dye it red before I could go back to brown. My scalp was burned & blistered and hurt like hell for months. I thought my curls would be gone forever but somehow I recovered. My curls came back but I've not touched it since!

Just remembered back to my hitching. I'd had my hair cut specially (to get rid of the blonde ends that were still growing out) but they missed one bit so I had a blonde splodge over one ear on the day. And for my birthday two weeks previously I got my belly button pierced. What an eejit. I had the choice then of either having a little bobble sticking out through the dress, or a huge white diamond of a sticking plaster that my mum kindly decided to put over said protrusion. It was visible through the dress.

    Who've I missed...

PP. I'll remember that, avoid T&G... I go to the same salon, have the same stylist, and he never seems to get it just how I want it, I've even been back a couple of times to get him to do it again. Why do I stay with him?! Is it a case of better the devil you know...?

Oh. And don't get me started on m-i-l's. The m-i-l came to help out with me and baby for only a few days. Cerise punk cummerbunds come to mind too.................why do people do it to poor little kids? Traumatises them for life..........

I've only done the bridesmaid thing once, my brother's wedding in '88. And yes, I too was in peach with puffy sleeves and a puffball skirt. Like Beesmum though, dark and had a tan at the time, so not too bad. And I was severial pounds lighter then he he.

False teeth don't bother me, though could you imagine spending the night with someone you think has all their own teeth and waking up to half of them in a glass by the bed!!! My nightmare would be not being able to see. Conversely, my dad would hate to not be able to hear, as he'd miss his music.

    Christmas Day in Diva Towers:

Just the 2 of us as always. We generally wake up early on Christmas morning to the smell of the turkey, which we cook overnight, and mange on the streaky bacon while the coffee's cooking.

Then, in our PJs we start opening prezzies - usually with interruptions of phone calls from my side of the family (mum in Goa and aunts, nan etc). Breakfast is smoked salmon and bucks fizz.

Then we enjoy our prezzies, take the mickey out of some of the dodgier ones and generally mooch about, prepping dinner together etc.

Just coz there's just the two of us, we don't skimp. The table is laid, crackers, party poppers etc - the works.

After dinner, relax a bit - perhaps watch a daft film, doze.

It's our Christmas and we cherish every second!

How many days to go now ..... ?

Need to buy stuff for grandsons which will really annoy their parents - cos I have to get my own back!!

Once you're tarted up tomorrow night, you'll be ready to go. My daughter-in-law felt just the same tonight but once we got in the car, she was raring to go. Dropped her off outside restaurant looking gorgeous. Her, btw, not me.

    Morning all.

Just want to say something, joking apart.

    PP.

Listen up, I know how upsetting it is when you have your hair sabotaged. Especially when, in the grand scheme of things, it's really not life-threatening or anything; but it IS important and horrible at the time. It's happened to me LOADS. Hence why I say I'd rather face a firin' squad than a hairdresser.

So-and I realise you may tell me what to go and do with my bit of advice but here goes. This is what I believe you should do.

Firstly, call up the salon (and by the way it could have been any salon, none are immune to buggering up someone's hair: I once spent well over £100 to have me hea trashed in a top posh London salon) and tell them. Not aggressively, but TELL them. It won't reverse the situation, even if they offered to refund you-which I doubt- but you'll feel better that you've been heard.

Secondly, attack the problem thus. Get yourself down the shops; take your daughter, I'm sure she feels bad about this, too; and have some fun trying on all the lovely hair accessories of which there are LOADS around at the moment. And a bob is the perfect style to be able to carry any of them.

Clips, hairbands with little flowers, bows or beads; gorgeous tortoiseshell ones, soft knitted or crocheted ones.

I don't know your age but why not try one of the lovely sequin berets? You can wear those out at night. V. trendy.

Is there enough length to pull it back? If so, pull it into a small ponytail and stick a nice big flower in. Hey Presto instant Copacabana! Cheryl will be in a mad jealous rage.

There are any number of hairpieces out there. Ponytails, plaits, velcro-on hair extensions, etc. I used to wear a ponytail before I grew my own hair and I loved it. Nowadays of course it stays in its box and only comes out at parties or to scare the window-cleaner.

Berets of any kind are fab. No, not the Frank Spencer ones-especially if you're wearing a mac-hoho- a bright colour, or a neutral shade. And customise it with a brooch or a pin or whatever. I've a great knitted one from Accessorize with a pom-pom on top which is FAB. I wear it all the time. Well, not in the bath..

In this weather, everybody needs a hat anyway. Get a nice fluffy one or a stripey beanie. Or what is really trendy is a headscarf a la Her Majesty.

And finally, if there's a posh department store anywhere near you, pop into Personal Shopping. I can't guarantee anything but they should certainly help you, and it's a free service.

And you know what. By the time this b. awful weather warms up and we're chucking off the thermals, it will have grown a bit. It will, you know.

So there you are. For what it's worth. I wish you well and good luck.

Have had a lovely day today, finally begun to feel a little festive cheer, and that's nothing to do with the 2/3 of a bottle of red I've imbibed already... No, I felt this was this morning (well, once the headache had worn off). But, the tree is up, the lights are strung, the little ornaments the swingy legs are everywhere and the lovely cards have started to come in. I haven't blogged much lately, because I've been a bit "Wonderful World" by James Morrison, but I got a lovely surprise in today's post and would like to thank CtD for her thoughtfulness. Yes, so, I was out at the Owlcotes Shopping Centre, wandering round MandS with much cheer and everyone was being quite civilised and cheery. Perhaps next weekend will be a bit more manic, but today was lovely. Pyjamas duly purchased, all sorted. Only need to buy sweeties now for various folk, but I don't trust myself to leave them alone, so they'll be a last minute job!!

I hope everyone's having a lovely festive time, since there seems to be no-one here but me (just call me Bill hehe), and hope that you will all excuse my waffle. Right, back to QI for me.

Spa passes sound fab deal, haven't spotted those, but if they exist for next hols might have to get one each since we usually book ourselves a pass for day one before braving the car park queue to move in (it's usually shrunk by the time we emerge about 6ish!) and we usually wish we could go again before we leave! Have done dry floatation, agree was fab, will treat myself to another once I've finished trying out all the other treatments which take my fancy. I tend to go for their full body massages and something different each time we go, so am slowly working my way through the list! Tother half likes the shiatsu massages (had one once but didn't enjoy as much as the more usual aromatherapy / sports massages) All so far have been well worth the funds, even if I have to save a bit up first!

Mary- thank you (and others) for the compliments, I think it's 90/10 all MrsW to be honest though!

    Ok OK, confession time....

...we had friends over last night and they really wanted to watch Xfactor. Now I hate these programmes and avoid them at all costs however not wanting to be rude and being enticed in with the promise of the gorgeous wondress that is beyonce I bowed to the pressure.

Here's the thing - I was in tears watching the girl when Beyonce came out with her. I was so choked by her reaction at not only meeting her idol but having her standing right there singing with her.....awesome.

I was imagining all my heroes and if I ever met them whilst helping them at work - eg, Gazza throwing me an England shirt and telling me we're in midfield together at wembley for Spurs or Luther Vandross asking me to duet with him....or Sharon Stone needing to be arrested and then interviewed in Basic Instinct *ahem* - ok I'll calm down and stop now!!!!

Anyway, I understand she won, didn't watch any of it other than those few minutes.

HOWEVER - auntie beeb, what are you doing hoodwinking all those phone voters on SCD last night, what a swizz. I dont care if they're carried over, you bottled it and here's my theory......Tom was bottom and you want him in the final!

have only just got up! And this from a girly that is normally up by 5.00am every day. Still I guess I needed it, and still beat Errol out of bed.

So, a few things while still bleary eyed and head swimmy.

Santa - what's all this clap trap that santa doesn't exist? Of course he does. I've been to his house is Lapland, stroked his reindeer, and sat on his knee. No, in all seriousness - Santa exists as we all carry a little santa with us. We are santa, bringing the joy, excitement and of course the presents, to those that we love each year. Ok, I might not be a jolly, big boned fellow dressed in red, but the actual image and personage doesn't matter, its the idea of him that is so real to everybody - kids, growed ups and old aunt gladys's (Gladi?). So there! No more talk of the 'lie', for it is merely a bendy truth.

Meeting 'the one'. I have met several 'the ones' and have had my heart broken many a time, or been the one doing the heart breaking. And each time I said never again, no more putting up with feeling like dirty brown stuff, no chance of somebody else getting that close and tearing me in two. That was, until the next somebody came along. I think you have to take your chances as they turn up. You all know how happy I am with Errol right now, but that doesn't mean that he won't cause me heart ache. But I can't live every day thinking along those lines. It is hard to trust, but you have to allow yourself that abandonment. Is Errol my soulmate - Idon't know, he didn't come with a label, but I do know that being with him makes me happy and he brings out the best in me. Do you need anything more than that?

    And finally, Happy Birthday Bond.

One of my relatives had a husband who delighted in putting her down and ruining her confidence - all because of his own inadequacies of course - she's a perfectly fine woman and her kids all love her to bits. He tried it with me too but because we weren't emotionally involved I told him where to get off! She finally saw the light and got rid of him - when he promptly started the same tricks on someone else. Nice!

    Hi everyone:

Well, I have had a very busy morning, taking into account that due to all the partying last Friday, I did not do a stroke of work!

I have finally succumbed and had a Twirl Hero - it was delicious!

I spent the entire weekend cleaning the house (why it took so long, I have no idea - we live in a shoebox!) and catching up with laundry. Managed to get the tree up - looking beautiful (boleyngirl: I have Anne hanging on my tree!) and all the ornaments and windchimes, etc are in place!

Looking forward to the meet tonight -though with it being a school night, it should be fairly well behaved.

For the rest of the week, my plan is to wrap up a couple of gifts each night, so that we don't have a load of them to do on Christmas Eve. I always think that on Christmas Eve, we'll put on a movie and wrap presents and it will be festive. Last year was a frenzy and a nightmare, so I swore we'd never do that again!

Hi B-sMum - glad to hear Bondy is ok and I hope all the other Statesiders are too - those photos were scary, and I grew up in a pretty snowy part of Northern England where we used to have to dig trenches around the house to get out!

Happy days............or not, whenever I remember the heater-less bedrooms and blankets so heavy it was a struggle to get out of them I say a little prayer of thanks to the people who invented central heating and duvets!

I'm looking forward to the new blog tonight - Friday sounded like great fun, but on a very serious note the news that came out later that evening was so sad, especially given the context and the messages shared in those 2 hours in Cyprus.

ChrissieS, I wrapped mine already. Not that there are that many. I say wrapped, sept for my mum's and my friend's birthday present. Of course I have no birthday paper...and how to wrap a bird feeder? It is a particularly awkward shape. Answers on a postcard please.

...and yes, I watched Love Akshully for the first seasonal time last eve...all good...

Indeed Bingo. They're nice and quick to put the German 'War Criminals' in the dock...

This isn't me condoning the German War Crimes btw, exactly the opposite, but shouldn't Blair and Bush be equally as answerable?

ps Derbyfi, thank you for your help, and I've tried a shoe and a boot box...all to no avail...I'm gonna have to go to the local supermarche to see if I can find a suitable container I think.

The only saving grace is that she ain't got a snowballs chance of guessing what it is once it's wrapped anyway...box or otherwise!

Hazel: Haven't watched Love Actually yet this year, but will do at the weekend. Absolutely love that film. How could Alan Rickman do that to the lovely Emma Thompson?! (yes, yes, I know it's not real!)

MrS and I watched it last Christmas Eve, surrounded by a mountain of gifts, paper, tags, selotape ...... oh, it just ruined the movie!

    Good suggestion from derbyfi.
