GRAPEFRUIT JUICE, DIET COKE AND A CUP OF TEA BUT NO...

Chris Evans | 16:52 UK time, Friday, 29 August 2008

.....BUT NO....

...parking space.

All three of those drinks just had by me in the last ten minutes but anyway forget that.

There's this bloke outside saying I can't park in a perfectly legal and free parking bay because he's waiting for a film crew ! So what. It's not your space, it's a space, that is empty therefore it is free to be filled by someone, anyone, when they choose to come along. By his rules, if you're due in the area at 3.30 in four Thursdays time then your mate has the right to hold it for you. Thing was though he was absolutely massive and spoke with an Eastern European accent.

So had to whizz around the block in my new %$£" (and park approximately a hundred miles away.)

That's why I'm late, that's why I have to go now.

Goodbye and have a cracking weekend.

CLP.

2008.

    Greetings and Salutations from Vancouver,

As ever, it has been a fine week on both the airwaves and within the congenial confines of this fine, flourishing written forum.

You had the bank holiday last week and this week, it is the turn of all ex-pats here in Canada to indulge in their "Labour Day". Ironic that a holiday with such a work-suggesting sobriquet determines that nobody is actually labouring. Bless these collonials, they do try so.

For me and mine, it is a weekend of an early finish today, a pub/liquid lunch with a couple of gentle post-lunch potations to follow, an evening of relaxation with my positively fragrant and utterly captivating lady; tomorrow up early to watch my beloved Blackburn Rovers avec fry-up (damn that time difference) then off for a hike before returning to BBQ; Sunday 'tis a lie in, a round of golf, a fish and chip lunch followed by an afernoon stroll on the beach and cheeky Sunday tipple..Monday, who knows but I am sure it will be a joy whatever we indulge in, blessed as we are with health and happiness.

To one and all, I wish you the most wonderful of weekends in the heartiest of health. Already looking forward to Christmas in Blighty...

So, the end of another week. Blimmin' quick one though.

Four more days at the sharp end of the valet bay. I'm becoming a demon with my chamois and the slickest tyre-blackener in town. One day I hope to move into exhaust maintenance, but at the moment that is just a pipe dream.

Back in the real world, I approach another month end, the only bonus being that this one ends up with Mrs MfR and I on a plane bound for Abu Dhabi.

Talking of Mrs MfR, we finally hit '10' yesterday and celebrated with a nice meal at The M. It had been a little while since we last went, but I can assure you that it is still nestled firmly in the top drawer.

I won't comment on this mornings rumblings, other than I am still intrigued to know who the 'blog mafia' and 'cool kids' are? Someone please tell.

Anyway, I may be back later, dependent upon wine intake.

Stars of the Show.. probably the Vulcan, The Eurofighter, Battle of Britain memorial flight (Which flew right over my head). The Red Arrows and numerous other fantastic displays.
My photo's could never do it justice . This years programme is similar to Shoreham which is tomorrow.

I think it's natural to want to try to please your parents (except, as you say Beesmum, in your teens!). I found out recently that the day I graduated from university was one of the proudest days of my mum's life, which pleased me enormously. But I agree with TTT, there are too many parents who perhaps regret missed opportunities in their own lives.

I suppose the line is between being supportive and wanting the best for your child(ren) and pushing them to do things they don't want to do.

Limited input here from me, since I'm not (and do not intend to be) a parent.

I would like to think I have never pushed mine to do something they didn't want to do(homework being an exception). In fact I have had to stop them doing some things on the grounds that they can't be in two places at once.

My only rule is that if they sign up for a team they stick it out for the whole season, come what may.

The one exception was a rugby team where the coach was a complete horror show who was sent to prison just after we left.

Did the living room last month, spare bedroom next. It's the next best thing to moving!

    Hellooooooooooo

Right, as mentioned above, photos now on FB if you're interested (mainly headstones and an old gooner!!) (AnnieG and Deb - how quick off the mark were you two?!?!? xxx)

Our two days in London were absolutely fab! We changed hotels at the last minute so that we were more West End than Thames-side, and the hotel we booked was a cracker. Will definitely stay there again: 2 mins walk from Holborn Tube and 5 mins from Covent Garden. Lovely.

So what did we get up to?

Thursday as planned, went to Highgate to see the cemetary. So peaceful, a serene haven in the midst of the madness of North London. Learnt loads too courtesy of the excellent guide that showed us around the West cemetary. Would highly recommend a visit if history is your bag. It's also entirely run by a charity now at vast daily expense.

Thursday night - lovely meal in a greek restaurant, then onto the theatre. Yes, Spamalot is incredibly funny. Haycart!! LOL!! Price of ice creams tho - ouch.

Friday - off to The Temple Of The Beautiful Game (Emirates Stadium) for a tour with Charlie George. What a nice geezer, and what a wonderful stadium. It's huge! Highlight of the tour for me was sitting in Arsene Wenger's seat, pitchside. Wowser!

After that we went to Camden for some retail therapy. I could have spent an absolute fortune - maybe a re-visit with a girly girlfriend is in order ..... after saving some serious pennies, of course!! Lunch was of the Cuban persuasion and delish.

After a brief siesta, Friday evening started off with a nice Italian meal, then some ale, then the cinema. Saw Hellboy II, not my cuppa, but Himself enjoyed it. Then we went to The Comedy Store in Leicester Square for the midnight show - first visit and it won't be the last. I was a bit worried as we got there fairly late so all the "back" seats had gone and we were sitting in the second row from the stage. Luckily the compare picked up on a group of 4 lads who looked like McFly and a drunken heckler in the front row, so we were safe - phew!!!

Came home Saturday after a lie-in at the hotel, then off out again last night to a BBQ. So today it's been relaxing, bike racing, a bit of football and freezing produce from the greenhouse (chilli peppers) and allotment (runner beans).

Off out tonight with Himself's mum and her hubby for a lovely pub meal - and they're driving! Result!!

Have missed you all like mad even though, in the words of the song, I was havin' a good time, havin' a good time!!!!

I've only been once, many years ago, and it was a work week - checking out youth projects in various parts of London and Cambridge. Stayed in a newly-opened hotel just for women. Strange indeed!!! I didn't book it, by the way! Our man-hating boss thought it would be safer for us. Spoilsport!!

Helloooos to everyone, sadly only the last few posts remain in my immediate memory but I think there's a chin up in there for jillygoat - hope something good comes along soon, and a congrats to Mr and Mrs MfR, and a don't panic to Gingembre, and good lucks with CVs, and teenagers - thank goodness I've got over a decade to prepare myself mentally.

Holiday was just what we needed - not much sun, which was a shame but just a chance to relax and chill out and talk and laugh and snuggle and spend time together. We walked on the beach and got sand in our toes and dipped our feet in the sea, we went for walks along the promenade at Mumbles, talking about everything and nothing and laughing until we (well mainly I) thought I was going to embarrass myself, we explored Oystermouth Castle, we drove to the Worm's Head and I chickened out from walking a way up to the Head because there was a BBC camera crew filming pieces about the erosion of the coastline (and laughed so much in the process of chickening out that I nearly embarrassed myself again), Mr Jumpy went on a bike ride and came home three hours later with the bottom half of his bike (and himself) completely caked in mud, we went out for (second) breakfast and I had hash browns in a cafe/shop called Treasure, we people-watched from the safety (and warmth) of the beach-side cafe, we played boules on the beach and didn't want to come home. Perfection!

And then. The airshow - fab! PP been reading your accounts of the bournemouth one, we went to shoreham on Saturday and got burnt. Was so engrossed in the planes that I forgot to take pictures :) had both sets of parents with us and also some close friends, what a good day out that was. Mr Jumpy normally wears sleeves that reach his elbow so wearing a t-shirt in the sun meant that his arms above his elbows got very burnt... cue fan on full all night and liberal application of aftersun every hour...

And then finally yesterday the girlies got together for tea on the lawn and the sun actually shone long enough for us to take our cucumber sandwiches and scones and strawberries and tea outside to eat.

Was quite overwhelmed though when Mr Jumpy's mum came in with a huge parcel wrapped in cellophane full of presents for the bump, and then announced it wasn't actually from her - it was from her colleagues at work!! These incredible people have never met me, have possibly met Mr Jumpy twice, and obviously love my mother-in-law so much that they put together this enormous parcel for us - I had to go upstairs and compose myself, I was so touched.

Shattered today, now I've caught up with all the postings I think I need a nap again.

Parents over for lunch then they're back off up to Manchester, and then maybe normal service will resume. Maybe.

Just don't know what to do to get her to live in my world, she's always off in teenage land somewhere!!!

Wow! Everyone seems to have had such a busy time of it lately. Puts me to shame with all the hustle and bustle of activity reported. Too many stories to comment on invidividually. I just lazed about and barely got into second gear. Jillygoat - sorry about the bad news. Really really feel for you at the moment. Been there myself and know how hard it is to see the brightness - but it's there believe me.

Firstly, just want to say to Jillygoat that I do sympathise with you and Mr J. What a nightmare it must be for you both. I am thinking of you - and although it's easy for me to say, there will be something else out there. Life can be such a bummer - just hang in there.

MV #183: just had to send you a wee message. It would appear we are in the same boat. My daughter is 17 and she is HIGH MAINTENANCE! In the main, she is such a lovely girl, we really don't have any major problems with her. But every now and then she will speak to us as if we are "old goats" which then puts us both in a rage where we vow to never do anything for her ever again! But, it's just her being 17. It's going to be like this for some time, I fear, so if you help me, I'll help you! (You too, Debbie!).

MV and Chrissie - just to say my daughter turned 18 in June and (touching wood and whispering so as not to tempt fate) she's slowly turning into a human being again!! She even hoovers her bedroom without being nagged (sometimes!). She still has her moments of course (so do I though, so I can't really complain!!) - but all in all she seems to be turning out ok! And when I manage to remember what I was like at her age, I think I'm quite lucky with her really!!

Just keep your heads down and wait for the storms to pass!!

Tinsel: thank you for your comforting words - I knew there was hope!!

Very amusing that you say "she's turning into a human being again". MsS went to bed one night when she was 14, and woke up like the Creature From The Black Lagoon - a complete monster! Nice to know it will turn around!

Sept. 17 is the 260th day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar and 260 is an 11 Gonal number therefore it's bound to be something to do with celery.
    Wet celery!
