Chris Evans | 11:56 UK time, Wednesday, 11 June 2008

When bad bad bad food turns even worse. Last night I had to...

...go to the airport to pick up my mum and her pals from their hols.

Now here's the deal... the pick up was Gatwick North at 23.15, awkward, awkward time. You see I couldn't leave London last night until 21.30 as I had to go and catch a band showcasing (favour to a mate), and Gatwick is only an hour away at that time of night so, it was hang around here or hang around there. I could have gone home but I would have only been able to stay for about five minutes before setting off again. Anyhow it ends up with me getting there an hour early and of course you're not allowed to wait, I'm also very hungry at this point. "I know," I thought, "I'll go to the garage around the corner, pop in, pick up a bite to eat and then park up until I am summoned by ma ma."

Not the most complicated of plans I know but nevertheless, what could possibly go wrong ?

Cue: my point of view, looking at the refrigerated sanwiches one day old !!!

I had no idea that what could look so effortlessly unappealing by day could look so positively deathly by night. The plastic packaging now mottled with a gloomy condensation, almost doing us a service by disguising what might lie inside. Rows of unselected garbage stood like lepers in a far flung wilderness. What were they to do ? They knew they were not good enough to be real food eaten by people who may care about seeing tomorrow morning. As I looked at them they looked away unable to return my stare. They knew they were not meant for this world. The fruit salads had turned brown, the pork pies had begun to breathe and upon closer inspection even the normally more hoity toity chicken wraps were shriveling up with embarrasment.

Seriously, this was a desperate enviroment for desperate people of which I was now one. So what did I do ?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I bought something, yes something to eat, yes I confess, I did I really did. However the story does not end there.

Stuck on the plastic window of my triangular round of cheese and onion kamikaze roll read the following label....CHEESE AND ONION - NEW RECIPE !

Excuse me, new recipe? It's cheese and onion, that's it...cheese and onion, CHEESE WITH ONION, CHEESE ALONG WITH ONION, ONION AND CHEESE, AN ONION CHEESE THING.

Oh and hang on a minute, these labels were everywhere... look...BACON LETTUCE AND TOMATO...NEW RECIPE....HAM AND MUSTARD...NEW RECIPE, what the hell are you talking about ?

And as if anyone that has to buy one of these sandwiches, who must be on the verge of STARVATION to do so in the first place, cares.

Drivers, late night dudes, hungry people of the roads of great Britain, you have my deepest sympathy.

Glad you saw the morning, my friend.

Had I been in your shoes I think a packet of much-discussed on previous blog crisps and some choccy-woccy woc woc would have done the trick.

    You're nice and early today!!

The thing about cooking chinese is that is takes 4EVER to shed/chop/prep and about 90 seconds to cook it all. I alway get stressed out cooking chinese, but it's one of my fave foodstuffs so worth the effort.

Claire - too much like The Badger, but nowhere near as good. Bit too gobby. S'ralan could end up doing time if he employs her ...

Helene - no external facing sales experience. Crucial for S'ralan, in my view.

If there's one thing we do every night, it is to eat well. We take turns to cook as we're both keen. We also make sure we have dinner at the table - civilised or what!

We have friends (and family) who never sit down together to have an evening meal - just grab junk on the run, but to us the dinner table is really important and a part of the day we both look forward to.

I think the thing is about Christof, is that he is very normal. Okay, so he might woo his Billy ex-wife with a car full of roses, and fly his New Natasha Wife to Italy for Ferrari Trip (although I think that might have been more for his benefit), but deep down in side what we love about Christof is that he is soooo down to earth and almost like one of us, with money. BUT the very very best thing about him is that he overflows with excitement about his life - he completely radiates enthusiasm and interest in everything he is fortunate enough to get the chance to do.... and is obviously appreciative of his good fortune. We, (us all), get the benefit of his enjoyment via his ability to broadcast his enthusiasm and we don't begrudge him it at all, because the very nature of his wholehearted enjoyment means that we share in his fun too.

Hence, we wouldn't expect any less of him, than to turn up at the airport to pick his mam and her mateys up from their holidays. Maybe if you are in the area you could pick my mum up from one of her "spending my inheritance trips"

    Hello,

I have arrived in a hot and steamy Malaysia (I mean that in the weather way, not the other way…steady!) after a rather pleasant 10 hour flight with the good people of KLM. Sadly no red headed super models (male or female) but some rather spiffing flight attendants and one of the most amazing men who has ever lived! Sadly the chap next to me was uncommunicative but there was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was also in the business class cabin with us and I got talking with him. He is simply amazing – he spoke 4 languages (so he claimed – I only understood one so the others may have been gibberish of his own devising) and had traveled further than I (to be fair he is much older than me). His name is Tran Minh –something and he is from a village outside Ho Chi Minh City. He was delighted that I had visited but told me off for not going out into the countryside to meet real Vietnamese people. He loves premiership football (but has oddly never been to England) and supports Chelsea (no one is perfect) but is worried that they fall over to easily (we agreed wholeheartedly on this point). He is traveling home now after being a teacher at a School in Belgium interestingly enough. One of the best things we spoke about was the art of showering. I am not quite sure how we got onto the subject but I think I was telling him about looking forward to the hot springs in NZ as I needed to relax. He laughed and said it was a long way to go to relax. His secret is the shower. To relax he said, you need to start off with a hot shower – as hot as you can take it, then slowly lower the temperature until it is freezing, then slowly turn the heat back up to the top again. This is the way to relax – and have someone wash your hair or scalp (he had none) (hair that is). To wake yourself up, simply reverse the process, cold, then hot, the cold.

I tried it here in Kuala Lumpur (in the most amazing lounge I have seen on all my travels) and it really does work – sadly no one was willing to wash my hair for me – so I did it myself. I am now wide awake. I shall have another shortly before my flight to see if I can put myself to sleep.

Why don’t you get Foxy to do an indepth investigation into what these new recipes are?! Don’t you just hate it when a bit of your sarnie has gone soggy because of the condensation!? I try and be organised and make my own sarnies now, if I know I’m going to be needing a snack! Can’t even rely on Pot Noodles (other potted foodstuffs are available) - they just don’t taste the same anymore, and they are something I have been craving!! We feel your pain, Chris!!!

Now, on a different note, my pal, myself and our wee lasses and lad were desperate for a coffee come 4.20pm yesterday - when Mamas need coffee, for goodness sake get them the biggest, strongest coffee that you can!! So, we saw welcoming boards advertising teas, coffees, snacks and meals outside a well known Italian chain restaurant and thought, that’ll do. Went in, waited at the sign that told us to do so, and asked a very orange waitress (should have suggested she get better lighting in her home!!) if we could just have coffees. ‘I’ll have to ask the manager,’ says she, and disappeared. Now, I can assure you, and some of your dear bloggers and blogettes can back me up, neither myself nor the children look like we would be any threat to an establishment. Ms Tangerine returned moments later and apologetically said that they were unable to serve coffee as they were setting the tables for evening meals (we could see 2 empty tables AND there were 2 groups of people enjoying vino AND coffee). What kind of establishment, obviously well staffed, cannot cope with 2 coffees and 3 glasses of water at 4.20pm!?!? FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ms Tangerine then had the tenacity to suggest other establishments which might accommodate us, which annoyed us even more given we know EVERY establishment that serves coffee in Inverness!!!! Or thought we did!!

Ok, rant over - but I feel your pain, Chris, this country has gone to pot! Shall we book the next boat out!?

was very boring as out of the country for the 80s. Never got to any real concerts - attended HK Rugby Sevens three times does that count.

First single I bought was Dance with the Devil by Cosy Powell - liked the drum solo.

    Okay I'll join in.

My mother taught Guy Chambers (the songwriter for Robbie Williams) to drive - an intensive course and all the band joined him at the end including RW. My mum was given autographed photo of RW and promo album swing while you are winning.

Mum also taught his brother Dylan as well.

Jules77 - hmmm, well I haven't really looked into it. All I can say is that if it stops another 7/7 or 9/11 then all well and good.
What I can comment on is that when I detain someone there maybe a need to make further enquiries and therefore bail them, but I can get an extension to hold them in custody in certain circumstances.
Now these jobs are nothing compared to those of our country's safety so if keeping these people off the streets saves lives then we need to hold them whilst making the further enquiries. If they're released the chances of them re-offending or even going missing are probably quite high.
Whether or not we need 28 or 42 days I do not know. 6 weeks does seem a longtime but believe me, there is a lot of intel, research and enquiry making to do when investigating this type of crime...IMO the worst type.

Hope that answers your question? Probably not but that's how I look at it

Thanks KW. I think I have an unrealistic idea of what's involved. I always forget that it doesn't stop when the 'bad' guys are arrested that a trial requires evidence etc. And your point regarding absconding certainly is important and presumably the worse the crime the more likelyhood. Lots to think about. Thanks again
