blog three eight zero six.
When bad bad bad food turns even worse. Last night I had to...
...go to the airport to pick up my mum and her pals from their hols.
Now here's the deal... the pick up was Gatwick North at 23.15, awkward, awkward time. You see I couldn't leave London last night until 21.30 as I had to go and catch a band showcasing (favour to a mate), and Gatwick is only an hour away at that time of night so, it was hang around here or hang around there. I could have gone home but I would have only been able to stay for about five minutes before setting off again. Anyhow it ends up with me getting there an hour early and of course you're not allowed to wait, I'm also very hungry at this point. "I know," I thought, "I'll go to the garage around the corner, pop in, pick up a bite to eat and then park up until I am summoned by ma ma."
Not the most complicated of plans I know but nevertheless, what could possibly go wrong ?
Cue: my point of view, looking at the refrigerated sanwiches one day old !!!
I had no idea that what could look so effortlessly unappealing by day could look so positively deathly by night. The plastic packaging now mottled with a gloomy condensation, almost doing us a service by disguising what might lie inside. Rows of unselected garbage stood like lepers in a far flung wilderness. What were they to do ? They knew they were not good enough to be real food eaten by people who may care about seeing tomorrow morning. As I looked at them they looked away unable to return my stare. They knew they were not meant for this world. The fruit salads had turned brown, the pork pies had begun to breathe and upon closer inspection even the normally more hoity toity chicken wraps were shriveling up with embarrasment.
Seriously, this was a desperate enviroment for desperate people of which I was now one. So what did I do ?
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I bought something, yes something to eat, yes I confess, I did I really did. However the story does not end there.
Stuck on the plastic window of my triangular round of cheese and onion kamikaze roll read the following label....CHEESE AND ONION - NEW RECIPE !
Excuse me, new recipe? It's cheese and onion, that's it...cheese and onion, CHEESE WITH ONION, CHEESE ALONG WITH ONION, ONION AND CHEESE, AN ONION CHEESE THING.
Oh and hang on a minute, these labels were everywhere... look...BACON LETTUCE AND TOMATO...NEW RECIPE....HAM AND MUSTARD...NEW RECIPE, what the hell are you talking about ?
And as if anyone that has to buy one of these sandwiches, who must be on the verge of STARVATION to do so in the first place, cares.
Drivers, late night dudes, hungry people of the roads of great Britain, you have my deepest sympathy.
CLP.
2008.

Glad you saw the morning, my friend.
Had I been in your shoes I think a packet of much-discussed on previous blog crisps and some choccy-woccy woc woc would have done the trick.

What a grumpy old man moment! I totally agree though clp. Mostly with your 'new recepie comment - some things advertised so often as 'new and improved' or new this or that you have to wonder how rubbish they used to be but in fact nothing has really changed or could be done ie: a cheese and onion sandwich can never be anything else can it?
Phew I feel quite emotional too - a grumpy old lady post

Heeee.... am on the "big" computer now, as mr jumpingbean has confiscated the laptop. So I suppose I ought to do something useful while I'm here. Loved reading today. Going back to police cars following I was on motorway and a car appeared to be following me so I speeded up from about 75 ish to 90 odd and it was an unmarked police car.
Yes I did get a ticket and points. He did ask why I was speeding but I didn't say 'cos you seemed to be following me Which although the truth I had a feeling wouldn't make much difference.
Garage food, buy a pack of biccys, anything but the dead bread
Complain about this comment
Jules there's a number you can call when you think you're being followed, just don't speed up! Pull in to the next services and call 112 I think it is (help me out guys, is that the right number?) and you can ask if there is a police car about. Don't whatever you do pull over even if they start flashing lights at you until you know it's the police for real. They're obliged to let you get to the next services before you stop.

Chinese banquet is a 50/50 effort. I'm cooking from scratch beef and green peppers in black bean sauce, and my version of singapore/chilli noodles with pak choi.
Those people at w@1tr0se have suppled the Dim Sums, seaweed, sesame prawn toast and prawn crackers.
The thing about cooking chinese is that is takes 4EVER to shed/chop/prep and about 90 seconds to cook it all. I alway get stressed out cooking chinese, but it's one of my fave foodstuffs so worth the effort.

Lee - lovely chap, I'm sure, but a bit of a loose canon to represent your business.
Claire - too much like The Badger, but nowhere near as good. Bit too gobby. S'ralan could end up doing time if he employs her ...
Helene - no external facing sales experience. Crucial for S'ralan, in my view.
If there's one thing we do every night, it is to eat well. We take turns to cook as we're both keen. We also make sure we have dinner at the table - civilised or what!
We have friends (and family) who never sit down together to have an evening meal - just grab junk on the run, but to us the dinner table is really important and a part of the day we both look forward to.
Soz if that's mushy, but that's how it is.

Impressive that you both like/can cook. part of the process too I think, chatting while cooking, with glass in hand often!

I just re-read CLP's blog and I am absolutely amazed that nobody has commented along the lines of .....
CLP, multi-millionnaire, media mogul, mr moneybags etc etc is proud to pick his mum and her pals up from the airport at 11.15 at night.
It would have been oh so easy to send a limo, a hummer, even a helicopter but CLP did it himself.
What a bloody nice, decent, ordinary geez!
Mr Evans, I salute you!

you See Cheryl the Diva,
I think the thing is about Christof, is that he is very normal. Okay, so he might woo his Billy ex-wife with a car full of roses, and fly his New Natasha Wife to Italy for Ferrari Trip (although I think that might have been more for his benefit), but deep down in side what we love about Christof is that he is soooo down to earth and almost like one of us, with money. BUT the very very best thing about him is that he overflows with excitement about his life - he completely radiates enthusiasm and interest in everything he is fortunate enough to get the chance to do.... and is obviously appreciative of his good fortune. We, (us all), get the benefit of his enjoyment via his ability to broadcast his enthusiasm and we don't begrudge him it at all, because the very nature of his wholehearted enjoyment means that we share in his fun too.
Hence, we wouldn't expect any less of him, than to turn up at the airport to pick his mam and her mateys up from their holidays. Maybe if you are in the area you could pick my mum up from one of her "spending my inheritance trips"

Hello,
I have arrived in a hot and steamy Malaysia (I mean that in the weather way, not the other way…steady!) after a rather pleasant 10 hour flight with the good people of KLM. Sadly no red headed super models (male or female) but some rather spiffing flight attendants and one of the most amazing men who has ever lived! Sadly the chap next to me was uncommunicative but there was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was also in the business class cabin with us and I got talking with him. He is simply amazing – he spoke 4 languages (so he claimed – I only understood one so the others may have been gibberish of his own devising) and had traveled further than I (to be fair he is much older than me). His name is Tran Minh –something and he is from a village outside Ho Chi Minh City. He was delighted that I had visited but told me off for not going out into the countryside to meet real Vietnamese people. He loves premiership football (but has oddly never been to England) and supports Chelsea (no one is perfect) but is worried that they fall over to easily (we agreed wholeheartedly on this point). He is traveling home now after being a teacher at a School in Belgium interestingly enough. One of the best things we spoke about was the art of showering. I am not quite sure how we got onto the subject but I think I was telling him about looking forward to the hot springs in NZ as I needed to relax. He laughed and said it was a long way to go to relax. His secret is the shower. To relax he said, you need to start off with a hot shower – as hot as you can take it, then slowly lower the temperature until it is freezing, then slowly turn the heat back up to the top again. This is the way to relax – and have someone wash your hair or scalp (he had none) (hair that is). To wake yourself up, simply reverse the process, cold, then hot, the cold.
I tried it here in Kuala Lumpur (in the most amazing lounge I have seen on all my travels) and it really does work – sadly no one was willing to wash my hair for me – so I did it myself. I am now wide awake. I shall have another shortly before my flight to see if I can put myself to sleep.

I was here a few months ago for work and went to Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu and everywhere I went in this country people were the same. It is a muslim country but you can drink here - it is cheap to live, everyone is smiley...it has the most amazing thunderstorms - if it wasn't for the mosquitos it would be perfect and i would emmigrate for sure!

Good morning Christoff!
It’s a brighter day in the Highlands, but we’ve had a wee spot of rain already so hopefully won’t have to water the lawn, veg and plants later!!!
What a loving chappy you are, picking your dear ma and her pals up from Gatwick! I’ve said it before, but she must be so proud of you, laddie!! Did she have a good holiday? Was it somewhere exotic? No holidays abroad for us for the rest of this year, so loving hearing about other folk’s trips!
One would have thought, in this day and age, with modern technology and all the noggins we have working in inventive places, that we would have a better way of packaging food! Why don’t you get Foxy to do an indepth investigation into what these new recipes are?! Don’t you just hate it when a bit of your sarnie has gone soggy because of the condensation!? I try and be organised and make my own sarnies now, if I know I’m going to be needing a snack! Can’t even rely on Pot Noodles (other potted foodstuffs are available) - they just don’t taste the same anymore, and they are something I have been craving!! We feel your pain, Chris!!!
Now, on a different note, my pal, myself and our wee lasses and lad were desperate for a coffee come 4.20pm yesterday - when Mamas need coffee, for goodness sake get them the biggest, strongest coffee that you can!! So, we saw welcoming boards advertising teas, coffees, snacks and meals outside a well known Italian chain restaurant and thought, that’ll do. Went in, waited at the sign that told us to do so, and asked a very orange waitress (should have suggested she get better lighting in her home!!) if we could just have coffees. ‘I’ll have to ask the manager,’ says she, and disappeared. Now, I can assure you, and some of your dear bloggers and blogettes can back me up, neither myself nor the children look like we would be any threat to an establishment. Ms Tangerine returned moments later and apologetically said that they were unable to serve coffee as they were setting the tables for evening meals (we could see 2 empty tables AND there were 2 groups of people enjoying vino AND coffee). What kind of establishment, obviously well staffed, cannot cope with 2 coffees and 3 glasses of water at 4.20pm!?!? FOR GOODNESS SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ms Tangerine then had the tenacity to suggest other establishments which might accommodate us, which annoyed us even more given we know EVERY establishment that serves coffee in Inverness!!!! Or thought we did!!
Ok, rant over - but I feel your pain, Chris, this country has gone to pot! Shall we book the next boat out!?
Huggles,
Susan

Debbie I hope you get your tickets, but you know how it goes, they will probably add an extra date or two so you will be in with a better chance. I was travelling when the Madonna tickets came out so put my sister in charge of getting them. and she did!
Re; Hamlet - No - no chance of tickets, it sold out almost immediately, mind, it has both David T and Patrick Stewart so the front three rows will be filled with personages in trekkie costumes (other sci-fi costumes available etc), But, hate me if you must, am going to Strat-onAv for th weeknd- and am Taming the Shrew tomorrow night :-)

Jumpingbean - thinking of you in the Big Smoke!! Hope we get to see scan photos later!! So exciting!
Oh, that’s the wee lass’s wee pals here! Only at 35!! Oh no!!! Catch you later!

Me and Mr bp wen to rocky horror show - dispite have long black looks and a figure to die for he insisted going as riff raff and so tried to die his hair yellow but it went green - I went as magenta - well who can resist a french maid outfit. It went really well until we release we had to get the park and ride into oxford - opps :-)
I guessed there would be no tickets to see the lovely Dr who but i can still dream ;-)

Hello again!
Take care Rob! By the way you are such a naughty boy (can say that being a year older I think).
Tinsel - Hurray!
CtD - Poor you with the back/leg/bum. The sciatic nerve goes right through your bum cheek and when I had it bad I could only sit on one side! For me physio really helped. I never knew someone to do so much with their elbow!
Sorry but someone asked me if I had seen George before (was it you Dreamer?) Yep twice. Saw him at Wembley last year, the night that our lovely CLP hosted the tv footage.
No luck geting pre-sale tickets yet :-(
Mr Debbie is keeping an eye on the website for me as I'm flitting about today. Fingers crossed!
Love

Chris, mate we do living history and travel up and down the country every weekend.
The quality of the food is, as you have discovered utter bab.
Steer clear of the pre-packed sarnies! Especially prawn (as Victoria wood once wrote 'they hang around sewerage outlets treading water with their mouths open')
Have experienced the after effects of prawn, sweating it out-willing the next services to come along on the sat nav!

Debbie - I saw Wham! in 1983 on their Club Fantastic Tour - it was their first major tour and it was the "shuttlecock" period, if you know what I mean! George was still ugly back then and we all fancied Andrew like mad. In fact, come to think of it, that was my first ever concert. I won the tickets and an album (sadly not signed) from one of the red tops - i was only 15. It was at the Hammersmith Odeon!
Hmmmmmm.
My true loves were Duran Duran tho. I was going to marry one of them and have lots of little durannie babies!!!
Right, nipping over to check FB. Nobody has joined my Matt Morgan Fan Club on RB's page yet!!!

Hey bloggers
this just gets busier every day!!
Debbie - good luck with tickets. We saw George on his first round of tours few years ago - abs amazing. Then went back to see him again the next year on his stadium tour and have to say preferred first gig. Perhaps cos we saw him and totally loved the gig seeing similar set soon after wasn't quite as good?! So good luck if you manage to get them, but maybe not so bad if you don't as can keep good memories of last gig!
Beesmum - will try that with Alfie for sure....sounds like you have a mad 'un!! The plastic shaker not working anymore! He has sniffed it out and taken it off to chew!!! Just caught him in time.
Sparkly - you naughty girl!! Think I will have to be getting onto FB just for the pics! 2 geminis sounds like madness.....certainly life would not be dull!!!! that's if you can speak over each other while you both try to get your say! I live with a gemini so I know what I'm talking about!!!! So EJR while you sound delightful (posh eh?) and your piccies sound equally delightful (delish for CtD) one gemini is sufficient for me!
Buddhist monk in business class? He has been praying well! Always fancied going to one of those buddhist retreats in the middles of nowhere for a week. On my to do list! Also fancy yoga retreat in India with silence. Think I'd be ok....but would love to try it out....self discovery etc.....
Highland Lass - with you on your rant on eateries saying no you can't come in!!! So many times get turned away for being toooooo late for food......what is the food all eaten?! Oh no - its just after 2 and the kitchen is closed for lunch!!!
Right off to shower....may try out the cold-hot-cold thing.....will let you know later. Might do 'a Lee' though!!

EJR - saying that you want to be bachelor forever is like covering yourself in chocolate in the effect it has on ladies. Look at George Clooney - the eternal playboy. Every woman wants to tame a man - ker-tush (that's the sound of a whip cracking).
CtD - I always think your dinners sound great and I don't even eat meat. Mr P's away at the mo so I'm living on tomato soup- "great" *she says full of enthusiasm* (he cooks, I clean).

He obliged, and signed the back of a fag packet. My then boyfriend (whose band were playing at the club that night) was mortified that I could be so un-cool!
He was really quite tall!

Changing the subject completely, Ginge can you give an insiders comment on the extension from 28 days to 42 thing because I can't understand what can be done in the extra fortnight that couldn't be done in a month? I am being genuine, this is not a dig, I just don't understand.

Ah. Hadn't thought of that. I don't mean to be too political but when you think what our tax is spent/wasted on, consultants for everything when it should be spent on the police and health etc etc so they have more than enough manpower instead of barely enough.

He he i'm like that with, love goes where my Rosemary goes, an oldie so thank God it's not played often.

Jules77 - hmmm, well I haven't really looked into it. All I can say is that if it stops another 7/7 or 9/11 then all well and good.
What I can comment on is that when I detain someone there maybe a need to make further enquiries and therefore bail them, but I can get an extension to hold them in custody in certain circumstances.
Now these jobs are nothing compared to those of our country's safety so if keeping these people off the streets saves lives then we need to hold them whilst making the further enquiries. If they're released the chances of them re-offending or even going missing are probably quite high.
Whether or not we need 28 or 42 days I do not know. 6 weeks does seem a longtime but believe me, there is a lot of intel, research and enquiry making to do when investigating this type of crime...IMO the worst type.
Hope that answers your question? Probably not but that's how I look at it
Complain about this comment
new blog peeps, see you on the other side

Thanks KW. I think I have an unrealistic idea of what's involved. I always forget that it doesn't stop when the 'bad' guys are arrested that a trial requires evidence etc. And your point regarding absconding certainly is important and presumably the worse the crime the more likelyhood. Lots to think about. Thanks again
