SongSpoiler - The Scissor Sisters - 'Kiss You Off'

Fraser McAlpine | 19:04 UK time, Wednesday, 25 April 2007

OK, so it's not fair that a good deal of the SongSpoilers we've put up have either been aimed at the Scissor Sisters or Razorllght. Clearly there are a lot of songs around which sound just like other songs from yester-ages-ago, and there's that saying "talent borrows, genius steals", too, which kind of proves seeking inspiration in songs you already know is an artistically valid thing to do. But hopefully you'll forgive just one more little Scissors comparison, if only because it shows a really interesting double-standard in the way people tend to view 'manufactured' pop acts and 'proper' rock artists.

See this? It's nice innit? A little bit of robo-swing, lyrics from the perspective of a strong lady done wrong, glam-rock lurch underneath, shiny modern pop on the top, what's not to like?

Well, there's the nagging feeling that there's already been a song a lot like this, and that it was done better the first time. Now...let me think, who could it have been?

But of course, a band as genuinely talented and artistic as the Scissor Sisters won't have ever HEARD of anyone as plastic and throwaway as Rachel Stevens, right? I mean Elton John likes the Scissor Sisters, they've got the royal seal of approval. No WAY they would be reduced to pinching ideas off a former member of S Club 7, would they? I mean, how DEGRADING...

And yet 'Some Girls' by Rachel Stevens is one of the best pop records of the last...AGES...and 'Kiss You Off' by the Scissor Sisters is...not. So why WOULDN'T they pinch the idea and try and re-sell it to the more pop-oriented rocksnobs? That's kind of what the Scissor Sisters are for, isn't it? Loosen some uptight musical prejudices while wearing deafening clothes.

Mind you, it would be nice to think the band could throw some hidden message Rachel's way to show that they know they've been a bit cheeky and that they appreciate the inspiration...

...oh look. They have.

I'm with you on this. Rachel Stevens, bless her, really did it better. I wouldn't go as far as saying it was that much of a great pop record, but I think the Scissor Sisters tried too hard in this one to make it look and sound camp. Now we just need some wise spark to mix the two.

Eh? I don't see the resemblance. I love both songs though.
