Next week's themes...
A big welcome to all the 'first timers who got in touch for Thursday's show. It really was a refreshing show. Saying that, we did miss the 'regulars' so looking forward to getting your emails and blog posts for this week's themes. Monday's theme is courtesy of one of our most prolific contributors so make sure you get behind his theme. The latest video featuring details of the week's themes is now up on the Get It On homepage...
Monday
Will you go for an Ellis Bextor or perhaps a Cougar Mellencamp? It's double barreled names to kick off the week. Scotch Git suggests this as a theme and with possible tracks from everyone from Mary Chapin Carpenter to Jerry Lee Lewis it's going to be a good show...
Tuesday
At last year's Soundtown, Alva Academy, we ran a session where some of the pupils came up with ideas for Get It On themes. Amy suggested a theme of songs that had to be three minutes or under. Some say it's the perfect length for a pop song. If you agree then lets have your suggestions, but a word of warning - I will have my stopwatch standing by...
Wednesday
Accapella breakdowns is the theme for Wednesday. That bit on the middle of Somebody To Love, Sweet Dreams, or maybe Girls and Boys by Blur. Start thinking of the bits where the music stops and the spotlight is on the singing...
Thursday
Finally - it's bonfire night tonight so lets have your appropriate songs featuring fireworks, bonfires and the like. Rocket man, Boom Bang A Bang and definitely something by Guy Mitchell...

Wednesday:
My yacht is called Capella and her 36hp diesel unfortunately developed an oil leak a couple of years ago, a fault I didn't notice until too late, when the knocking sound became unbearable. The result was that the engine stopped when I was entering the harbour, leaving me heading straight for the pier at three knots...
I quickly hauled out the anchor chain and threw the hook over the side, managing to halt Capella in her tracks before she could hit the wall.
My engineer diagnosed the problem and we needed a new engine. A rather expensive oil leak!
Capella is now as good as new. Please play a song which reminds me of a Capella breakdown,
"I hear you knocking".
:-)
Alternatively, please play the live version of Runrig's "Loch Lomond"

WEDNESDAY
In 1945 Woody Guthrie penned the lyrics to 'Gonna Get Through This World'
In 2003 Lisa Gutkin of the Klezmatics gave the lyrics a tune.
In 2006 the song was included on an album titled 'Wonder Wheel'
In 2007 the Klezmatics performed the song at Glasgow's Old Fruitmarket, on Sunday, February 4th, the final night of the Celtic Connections festival. It was a great gig.
The wonderful Irish colleen Susan McKeown is the lead vocalist on the song.
(Every Jewish band should have a Celtic lady singer. K.T. Tunstall proved it with Oi Va Voi.)
Gonna Get Through This World - The Klezmatics
"Woody Guthrie wrote over 3000 lyrics in his lifetime, most of which he never recorded. The Klezmatics offer up 12 of these previously unknown songs, creating a wondrous wheel of new music that places them in today's musical soundtrack. Just as he would have wanted."
Nora Guthrie

Hi all...
Got myself involved in the 'MOVEMBER' Prostate Cancer Appeal ... i've got to grow a mustache over the month of November and raise as much as i possibly can ... i've never had a tash before so i've no idea how bad i will look.. i'm going for the full Zappa look so wish me luck.... all donations will be gratefully received and my progress can be followed here http://uk.movember.com/mospace/304184
(donations are paid direct to appeal, not me)
Thanks again
Frank

Wednesday - A Cappella:
Pretending To Care or Lost Horizon - Todd Rundgren
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7S_GYh57io
(from his 'A Cappella' album - everything you hear is Todd's voice, including the keyboards!)
No Man - The Subdudes
(beautiful soulful ballad - sounds a bit like Stevie Winwood)
Sloop John B - The Beach Boys
or
Lady Lynda - The Beach Boys
All Around My Hat - Steeleye Span
Lysergic Bliss - Of Montreal
(check it out - sounds weird but it's not!)
Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl
(two short a cappella bits near the end)
Road To Nowhere - Talking Heads
Got My Beer In The Sideboard Here - Chas & Dave

The Boy With The Arab Strap: Belle and Sebastian (at the end)
My Boyfriends Back: The Angels
The Part That Really Matters: The Proclaimers
Stairway To Heaven: Led Zep (at the end... but at 7.58, I can't see it getting an airing!)

Paul Simon - Homeless and / or Diamonds on the soles of her shoes

Skids - Woman In Winter

and one which is probably just ruled out of theme
Billy Joel - The Longest Time

Mark Smith R.I.P.
Another unsung hero taken to that great gig in the sky.
Mark Smith is a session bass player who has played with many artists including The Waterboys, Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music to name a few has died at the age of 49. I met Mark a few times and was one of the most unnassuming musicians I have ever met despite sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in modern music. One of Mark's most famous bass sessions was on 'Angels' by Robbie Williams. Now he is with the angels I am sure.

Bryan, a must for Thursday night should be Catherine Wheel with "Sparks are Gonna Fly!"
Not really that fond of it, but with a name and title like that - can't go wrong!

Enough "Fire" songs already I guess, so tricky....
Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band (sing about "sky rockets in flight". Though never did understand why anyone would let off fireworks in the middle afternoon. Unless it was through somebody's letterbox....)

Basil Brush Boom Boom Song

Absolutely burst my head to the point of distraction thinking of suitable songs for tonight only for Richard to relax the theme before we even started!!
Complain about this comment
I know what you mean, Norrie. And some of the choices tonight didn't even make their own enlarged theme definition. One wonders if it's worth the bother of knowing the themes in advance and giving them any thought whatsoever. On tonight's going we all might as well have texted in suggestions at the last moment.

Norrie,
What we need are more caption competitions. In September 2008 there were 15 topics on the blog. In October 2008 there were 20.
Compare this to 14 for September and October 2009 combined.
Bryan, Babs, make the blog fun again!
please?
