Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:54 UK time, Friday, 14 August 2009

It's time to reveal the themes for another week. You can leave your suggestions here on the blog or why not pay our Facebook page a visit and join in the banter there. Otherwise emails, calls and texts are all welcome...

Monday 17 August
I'm looking for advice in song tonight. 'Be Young, Be Foolish But Be Happy',
'Express Yourself' or 'You Can't Hurry Love' - the advice line opens at ten past 6!

Tuesday 18 August
Ace of Spaces, Diamonds Are Forever, or Hit The Road Jack? Tonight's theme is playing cards - Here's hoping for a full house!

Wednesday 19 August
We're looking for songs about rivers - 'Many Rivers To Cross' (Jimmy Cliff), 'Take Me to The River' (Talking Heads), or perhaps something by The Blue Nile.

Thursday 20 August
What do Diana Ross, Robbie Williams, Beyonce and Peter Gabriel have in common? They have all left bands to have solo careers. The art of going it alone - tonight on Get It On.

I've given up complaining about repeat themes (even though there are many that have been suggested here and elsewhere that have never been used).
What I think we should do though is have the playlists up from the previous time(s) we've had the theme and then avoid requesting / playing the same songs. Just to keep it interesting.

I remember her singing this ending in a BBC programme called 'The Songwriters Circle' about 10 or 15 years ago. Twas a great series which also featured John Martyn and Neil Finn amongst others. Gretchen Peters was on the same programme and I always remember her face lighting up when Joan started playing Diamonds and Rust.

    Loved this from Wikipedia...

Although Dylan is not specifically named in the song, Baez has admitted in her memoir as well as in a number of interviews that he is the inspiration for the song.

The following excerpt shows Baez's rendition of this conversation between her and Dylan:

"You gonna sing that song about robin's eggs and diamonds?" Bob had asked me on the first day of rehearsals.
    "Which one?"
"You know, that one about blue eyes and diamonds..."
"Oh", I said, "you must mean 'Diamonds And Rust', the song I wrote for my husband, David. I wrote it while he was in prison."
    "For your husband?" Bob said.
"Yeah. Who did you think it was about?" I stonewalled.
"Oh, hey, what the **** do I know?"
"Never mind. Yeah, I'll sing it, if you like."

    #129 & #132,

Putting them into the freezer makes them drowsy which means that you can lift the lobster without risk of being nipped by the claws. Fishmonger lobsters will invairably have elastic bands over the claws so you don't need to worry about them.

Norrie is correct with #133, use a chef's knife to kill instantly by stabbing vertically through the centreline of the head part of the shell. However, make sure you complete this movement in one go or it fails to meet the "instantly" criteria.

Me? I have the pot bubbling away. Lift lobster in right hand (watching for wayward claws) and the pan lid in the left. As soon as the lobster goes into the pan, put the lid on and start whistling along to whatever Bryan has put on the turntable. That's as near instant as you need and you don't get any green bits floating around the pan resulting from the head stab.

(Sorry about the last bit, but it's true)

You really shouldn't think about this too much or the delicious experience of eating lobster becomes secondary to the cooking of the meal. If we concentrate upon the processing of what we eat, we'd never touch beef, chicken, pork etc etc etc

    :-I

    Enjoy it!

Visually very nice, aye, and the links to the BBC artiste pages are great.

However, now you've got all that data and are publishing it for human inspection, it'd be so much better if you made it available as a dataset for machine consumption so that we can build on it... say to do things like

    * Produce ongoing stats of what's played
    * Cross-link back from tracks to themes where they were used

RSS feed of tracks for each episode would do, although a comprehensive datestamped feed of all tracks played would be ideal.

Or, just post 'em to the last.fm API and let their systems sort out the consumable data output.

#196 - No bad idea Hoppo. I`ve often toyed with the idea of "Pointless Bands" as a theme, which is kind of what you are saying. Band leaders who are responsible for everything and havent really needed to be in a band and share the glory in the first place.
For example - Mark Knopfler, Chris Martin, George Michael, Sting (maybe) etc
Of course there is the other side - Noel Gallagher and Phil Lynott spring to mind.

I see Nils Lofgren has been mentioned a couple of times and I`d like to add "Keith Don`t Go" to the list. Memories of a trampet at Caird Hall.

Van Morrison (ex Them) - Real Real Gone was a great suggestion by Hoppo

Sorry, but have to disagree with both Sting (The Police were very much a triumvirate of musical input) and Noel Gallagher (well, OK, maybe moany brother singing is essential for the sound, but the rest are effectively session musicians for Noel's songwriting).

Look what the clever BBC techies have done.

Very nice and useful, particularly for those of us who use this data integration to build fun and cool stuff. But it's hard to do without machine-parsable data.

Like all the stuff that I proposed up above.

Like the single, consistent, all tracks in one place listing I built a few months ago (but was killed through multiple changes in the formatting of the Tracklist page - as the data wasn't presented machine parsably, I had to screenscrape it and work out where the song & artiste info was).

Like this neat combination of places I've been and photos I've taken there (hmm France location data a bit dodgy I note).

    Hi All,

Have been a little absent this week! 3 suggestions for tonight's show:-
    1. #201- Edwyn Collins "Home Again" would be great- is anyone going to see him this weekend at the festival?
    2. Alison Moyet (ex Yazoo)- anything from her Alf album would be great- however, off the top of my head I think Dave Stewart (ex Eurythmics) co- wrote "Is this Love?"- so that would fit 2 different band members into successful solo careers.
    3. Lastly, not sure if this counts as he flirts between solo and band, but Roddy Woomble (Idlewild) "My Secret is my Silence" is a beautiful song, indeed you could play anything from that album.

    Looking forward to the show,

    Kx
